In this video, we check out the CZ Hammer Coach that we've owned for around 8 years now. This beautiful double barrel shotgun has a lot of character, and provides tons of old west feel when punching steel on the cowboy range. It's also wonderful for riling up the neighborhood wasps at the range!

For me, the hammered coach gun is the best 12 gauge home defense weapon. You can leave 2 shells sitting in the chamber uncocked. Safe and at the same time ready to meet an uninvited guest!

I’ve been meaning to respond to your excellent video. After watching, I picked up a new one for 810.00. They sure are beautiful shotguns. I plan on shooting Classic Cowboy. In fact I’m thinking of using Schofield revolvers over my Vaqueros. Thanks for posting your content. Take care.

I have one, and I’d never get rid of it. These are built to last, mine is still tight where my other double barrel that I’ve owned for shorter period of time rattles and is loose. Yes light and short beast😂. The barrels are well regulated and shoot slugs great. I can shoot my shorty tricked out AK, then shoot my CZ and be just as happy. Try min shells, especially mini slugs they’re super fun in this.

Never thought to run minis! That'd be a blast. I imagine reloads could be a bit tricky, but that may be a great way to get recoil sensitive shooters to the cowboy range. 🤠

@yeahsure5956 I'd like to get my hands on one. I really like the older styling. Call me crazy but not a huge fan of the overly shiny grip frame and trigger guard but that's just me. That's my only gripe, but it goes along nicely with their "brass" styling on the big boy lever guns.

You can use one of these Coach Guns for home self-defense if after you fire off two deadly shots you seek cover reload while you seek cover and then fire off two more shots as most videos will show you the bad guys flee after the first two shots

The SASS category that requires external hammers on a side by side is “Classic Cowboy”. In my area less than ten percent of shooters choose that category. Of course, a “hammer double” is legal in all categories. It can be staged with the hammers cocked. Most stages have four shotgun targets so you need only cock the hammers “on the clock” once per stage!

Hubby looked at a bunch of different SxS and settled on the Cimarron 1878 since it has the "mule-ear" hammers and no damn tang safety. The tang safety is an immediate "no sale" for him.
@triplefshooting

I dont blame him. The only thing that helped me with the cz was that it wasn't an automatic reset on the safety.

I'd bet that gun would be a real hoot with real black powder loads? I really enjoy shooting bp 12 gauge with either paper or brass shells. Big fun!

@triplefshooting Год назад
I wish I had some made up! I forgot to mention that the barrels get real hot with that small fore end. I bet the BP loads would make you want a glove after a bit!

Your CZ is an older model; it has the extractor guide barrel extention. The barrel extension bothers some CAS shooters because it looks like it will interfere with smooth loading. With practise, it really does not make a difference. Newer CZ has a hidden guide pin on the extractor, no bbl extension, and no barrel extension cut out on receiver. All other parts the same. My main match gun was marketed by Liberty as the "Liberty II", exactly like yours except with 26" bbls. Good for CAS, ducks, and geese.

I have a CZ coach gun but the hammer springs in mine are too stiff to fan the hammers back like you were doing. I may have to give CZ a call and see if I can get a new set of springs from them. I also recently got a Pietta Coach gun which is very similar to the CZ but made in Italy instead of Turkey like the CZ. The Pietta is also color case hardened but to a much lesser extent than the CZ. It also doesn't have the engraving of the CZ but it was about $300 less. The hammer spring for the right barrel in the Pietta is much heavier that in the CZ while the left side is about the same.
@triplefshooting
@triplefshooting Год назад
I was unaware pietta was making a coach gun. I need to check that out! The hammers on my CZ are pretty stiff, but obviously not overly so. I've never had the thing apart to see what it looks like inside, but I imagine the springs could be cut and stretched a bit to take some of the pressure off. I wouldn't do it myself until I had some backups though! I seem to be good at overdoing, then waiting around for the replacement. Odd that your pietta has 2 different spring tensions between the hammers.
@weldonwilson
@weldonwilson Год назад
@@triplefshooting They use a long flat spring that is folded on half into an V shape to make two separate springs. The bottom half is for driving the hammer forward and the top half is for the hammer rebound. There is a small pin at the base of the V that serves to help hold the spring in place and to serve as a pivot point for the spring(s). The pin fits into a hole in the side plate. As far as the Pietta goes, I think the spring tension difference is just due to bad tolerances in manufacturing the springs. They just get slapped in at the factory and as long as they cock and fire, everything's OK. I've been thinking of ordering some springs but I haven't found any listed for the Pietta. The Pietta looks to be the same size springs as the CZ but I'll have to open both of them up and do some measuring and see if they will swap.

I have the Pedersoli Wyatt Earp probably made with Huglu parts and love it. It has never been stiff so I assume the gunsmith polished tithe moving parts. The hammers are quite stiff though. Cheers and thanks for your review.

I have all the same feelings about this gun and it's use as you do. I haven't shot 500 plus rounds though it. Stiff barrel release,, but my rabbit ears are stiff too. Did that improve as well? Your wife must be a peach buying you that. Thanks

Will get back into the CAS thing in a few years. Last "compete"in 1998. Wasn't competitive then. As then, I will be using a Rossi Coach gun. Just want to play; don't care about placing nor even winning.

I always had much more fun when taking that attitude. I purchased the guns I use because they all sort of fit the same time period rather than the most competitive offerings. I don't think you can have much more fun shooting than with cowboy action.

@@triplefshooting My first Rossi gun, I bought in 1993 for $350. They are hard to find, now. Bought my current one last Dec at a live/on line auction for much more, plus the premium, but it is what I wanted. At the huge Phoenix gun show, last Dec, I saw one SXS "1878" gun with a $1200 price tag. I have a Henry and a Spencer as well as a couple of Richards conversions and Remington conversions, so about 1872 and before is the time period I like to stay in.

@jason60chev we share similar tastes! I have a couple 1851 conversions, an 1866, and the hammer coach for my setup. The conversions are some of my favorite revolvers because of the "make it work with what we have" design. That and they are some of my favorite looking guns.
