Join Airways on a special visit to Amsterdam Schiphol. Our team went all the way up, to the very top of the control tower, and discussed the challenges and future of ATC in the Netherlands with Martijn Duijkers, supervisor in the tower. How does the Dutch hub work?

We would like to thank Luchtverkeersleiding Nederland for inviting to the very top of the Dutch aviation and Martijn Duijkers for showing the Airways team around and explaining the complex operations carried out daily by LVNL. Video realised in collaboration with ‪@AmsterdamAviationYT‬

As far as I am aware, Netherlands has the nicest and most professional ATC. Also, in case of emergency, they keep the pilots on the same frequency and switch the controllers themselves, which is great attention to detail and reduces pilot workload

Yep, when you’re watching an ATC video it’s so frustrating to hear pilots have to explain and give the same info multiple times in an emergency situation, but in Schiphol they will quickly be given a dedicated frequency very shortly after the pilot declares (or sooner if ATC decides it’s warranted). I know there’s an ATC staff shortage in the US so they can’t do that right now, but hopefully it’s a goal for the major hub airports at least.

@@TonyTheYouTubawe have a shortage in the Netherlands as well, and still we can create things like this

@@pjotrtje0NL Yeah, the U.S. is notoriously resistant to change. It wasn't always this way in the States--we pioneered most of what the world now sees as standard operating procedure for airport and air control--but then we suddenly and stubbornly stopped all progress.

Great video. It was entertaining while also informative. I always enjoy a little peek behind the curtain. Thanks!

By coincidence, I flew from AMS just three days ago. My flight departed from the M gates, and taxied to runway 36L. I thought perhaps we were taking the motorway to New York! It’s a long taxi.

Yeah, 36L/18R is a pain in the butt. The reason that it is used so often is because it causes the least noise nuisance out of all of Schiphol's runways.

@@chipdale490 Interesting insights. I landed on that runway some years ago, and I thought they were driving me to my hotel.

Interesting that control of the ramp is handled by a completely different organization than the rest of the movements.

Not the case, it's simply an external company that does the training for new students at CPH airport. Was poorly phrased in the video.

Thats the same scenario as in Lima, Perú (SPJC, LIM)

The tow traffic is handled by a different organization indeed!

I think that's also true in the States. If there are any pilots or ATC controllers here, please correct me if I'm wrong.
