I don’t think I can ever get over that last line every time I hear it it makes me so sad. I actually did cry the first time I listened to it :( And nah, even if I don’t believe in god I’m not gonna click off. Not gonna lie, I usually would, but I think especially in times of grief it’s important to just be there for each other, even if our beliefs are different and even if it can be awkward. I haven’t seen any yet thankfully, but I really hope the brothers haven’t gotten any backlash or hate from any group for this song.
I dont think that the god is really real part is about religion i think it was used more as an analogy as to the first stage of grief (Denial) where you are denying it usually by praying/wishing and by saying god is really real essentially is a way for them to say "He will get better"
The lyric with them talking about "breaking him out" really hits me deep for some reason. "Come on, Dad, get out of bed" feels so vulneruble and helpess almost. Because it's like a plea, a last wish or a hopeless attempt to spend more time with him that isn't in a place like a hospital bed
This song is the embodiment of a recurring thought I've been having since childhood - that everything in the world is happening right at the very moment, and everything is happening on their own terms. Either you're watching it as an audience (think RU-vid videos) or you're completely oblivious of it. Regardless, whether it's for good or for bad, the world will still keep spinning; leaving everything that stopped behind. I know it's more of an internalized thought, but I know everyone of us had that "why are you all happy? Something bad just happened to me!" moment where any signs of positivity or anything completely opposite to what you're feeling feels like an "insult" to your despair, as if they're laughing *_at you_* even if they're complete strangers and have no clue exactly what you're dealing with. It's easy to ignore everything until it happens to you or you really want something to happen, and this song perfectly encapsulates that. AJR has a way of writing lyrics that are aggreably "childish" or "shallow" but after learning the context you'll soon realize that the "shallowness" is actually them being straightforward. Like - it won't click at first, but once it does, it's like stepping into a deep rabbit hole. I was full on bawling when I was listening to this song for the first time as I listened to it after hearing the news of Gary's passing. It's such a simplistic song but out of all of AJR's songs, this one hit me the hardest. Not even My Play got me heaving in and out.
