One of our 2017 goals is to get a livestock guardian dog. We're really excited to achieve that goal! We brought home our newest addition to the Grass-fed Homestead family... "Blue" the 130lbs. Akbash.

I think Blue is more depressed then "calm". I would be too if after 6 years I was sold to a stranger and taken from my home. I hope you consider that and spend alot of hands on time with him.

Hope you took him to the vet. I see hip issues when he walks as well as the emotional issues of being a mature guardian suddenly out of his own area.

Blue seemed relieved to be penned with the sheep. Poor fellow, he looked as if he was going to be punished until he saw sheep, then he moved right into the pen knowing that everything would be ok.

We had an Akbaş at our factory.Roaming free on and around the factorys land.Everyday when workers would go to the bus station to drive home, he would walk with them and wait until they entered the bus.The next day he would wait at the bus station to walk them back to the factory :) Most loyal and intelligent dog i've ever known.Rest in Peace Çelik.Hope you're in heaven oğlum.

Blue has a big adjustment to make. It's very traumatic for a LGD to be taken out of their comfort zone suddenly. He'll be emotionally drained and physically lethargic for awhile, I think. I'm surprised that his breeder would do this to him, but Blue will probably be a wonderful dog for you. He'll eat when he's ready to. He needs to just rest and process without a lot of stuff coming at him. As usual, Little Buddy is brightly watching, asking questions and doing his own processing. I was thinking as I have watched this and others of your vlogs, that LB's relationship with you at this age is giving him a "love bank" that he'll draw from all his life and be comforted and strengthened by when those inevitable hard times come. He's such a precious and delightful little guy!♡

I was wondering, too, why an owner would sell a proven stud and highly trained guardian dog. I thought I observed some arthritic behavior when he first started to move around. Please find a vet with guardian dog experience who will either do visits at your farm or have an office close by since traveling can be very traumatic to them.
@cbwmama8461

Some of the large breed vets also treat guardian dogs on site. Why not get Tess' recommendations :o)
@acoatofgold5627
@acoatofgold5627 7 лет назад
Cbw Mama blue was favoring his wounds from the fight, not arthritis imo. he will need a checkup but its more likely his owner is freshening his breedline and a new stud is coming into the line.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
You are correct Gold - The breeder retired Blue because he was his only Akbash stud and all the breeder's females are now related to him. He brought in a new Akbash stud

Livestock Guardian Dogs are such gentle sensitive affectionate Dogs and they absolutely love lots of cuddles and human interaction as well as play with other dogs. Just because they´re independant doesn´t mean they love isolation or living like livestock on a paddock as a hermit. If the female dog in a later video keeps jumping over the fence, building a higher fence is clearly not translating her message at all. While foster-homing livestock guardian dogs myself that have been misunderstood or kept in captivity or been abandoned, I get to experience their true rich nature unfold, if you hold a safe space of lots of love for them. It was very painful for me to watch, how the breeder in your video handled him just like an object, no soulful touch at all, and a new caregiver and child, how can they not be more excited from their heart and hug and cuddle the dog. You should see those depressed dogs flourish once you shower them with attention and cuddles and give them joyful tasks like exploring nature and hiking, camping and playing and allow them to go with you everywhere. That´s when they love eating, first be happy, then eat - not first eat, then be happy. They´re too clever, they can´t be manipulated either. Leaving them in a paddock like that is clearly underchallenging his intelligence and excellent character and diversity. They get bored and depressed, if they don´t have all aspects that they need to be happy .... This is the big misunderstanding of these gentle Souls, the beautiful Livestock Guardian Dogs, which is only one of their many facets, but they are so often misunderstood and end up in people´s hands who have no willingness to really get to know them deeply and slowly like a best friend with respect and freedom, only then the bond and trust grows slowly. It is so rewarding to experience, because they don´t need you, but you need them ! The friendship can be so deep, but not if you leave them out there like livestock ... so sad to watch ....

It would appear that the breeder may be recycling your dog out of his own pack of GD's. Blue is a great old boy with the right temperament but has some obvious hip issues and is going to need some TLC to last another few years. I'd be looking for a puppy for Blue to teach. Normal life cycle for a big dog is 10 to 12 years, so you have time. Also - jumping off tailgates is really hard on the dogs limbs and joints. I do some hunt & field trials with my lab and I never let her jump off the tailgate.

He's awesome! From what I have seen from our LGDs, his timid behavior is not surprising because they are all about knowing what their "job" is. Since he is in a brand new environment I'm excited to see how soon he settles into your place and starts to do his "job" thus gaining confidence. I actually liked the blood battle wounds cause this means he'll be able to take care business if it comes to that. That must have been a very hungry fox to take that kind of a chance.

Based on his movement and hip issue, Blue must be at least 8 years old at least. I wouldn't be surprised at all if he would be 10 years old. These dogs are normally very agile and active. A 6 year old dog is still in his prime - he wouldn't lose much from his agility at all by this age.

Blue looks like a good starter dog for you and especially Little Buddy. He is calm and sweet. From experience I think he may be getting a little old and does have some arthritis and the long trip was hard on him. Also his haunches are really sunken in. I wouldn't bath him until the weather gets warm because he probably hasn't had a bath before and has lanolin from the sheep protecting him from the rain and snow. Also I would check him for worms. You will be a great family for him and he looks very happy with the sheep.

Even a middle-aged person who was (forcefully) relocated to a completely new environment needs time to look over the new digs and meet and greet the locals. Don't be anthropomorphic about Blue. He is a dog. He will work things out to his satisfaction (or he won't) eventually. Everybody needs to just give him space and time A number of years ago I adopted a 12 year old female, Sable/Cream, Norwegian Elkhound, named Mahlee. Her original owners were getting too old to take care of her. The shelter lied and listed her as only 10yo!!! She lived until she was 15 1/2 yo. She lived in a slightly depressed condition for the 30 days at the shelter; (the shelter didn't have a foster home she could immediately go to), after all who wants to adopt a gorgeous mangy old "mutt". She found a new "forever home" here with us along with two younger Basenjis/Rat Terriers (one bro & one sis) as well as three cats (two Bros & one sis). She was always sweet and gentle with everyone here until the day she died. She taught everyone so much. She graduated from three dog training courses with me. And she also earned her AKC CGC Cerification with me as her handler. She went through and passed (on the very first attempt) every thing that the younger dogs did and earned!!! RIP - we love you Mahlee!!!

He looked very sad & confused...and I'd be a bit ticked off he wasn't washed before presenting him to me as a buyer...not a great sign of care...but he is a working farm dog. Iono bro...I'd keep a close eye on him for health problems. He either was ill from the long ride (car sick would do it) or has underlying health issues or he's depressed. I have to ask too why are you keeping the herd in such a small corral area? Is it to orient them to home? I hope you give Blue his own sleeping area...cause honestly I would hate to see him being smothered by sheep butts all the time...lol poor guy. I've never bought a dog unseen, but I would suggest that you always go to meet your potential animals before buying, but that warning being said...I pray he works out & finds his new home to be a happy one! :)

I think he needs lots of reassurance. Did the breeder tell you what kind of diet he had Blue on. It might help him adjust if you try to keep his old diet. LGD's are often more active at night so along with all the new changes I think you should see him perk up quickly. I get the impression that Blue needs to feel your appreciation for the work he does. The sheep are his job not his friends. Your family is who he works for and he needs to know you guys and love you guys. He would probably do his job anyway but he will do his job better if he knows he is appreciated.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
Yeah, we've been giving him A LOT of assurance and appreciation to get him comfortable here. He's never lived anywhere but the ranch he came from so he is still adjusting. I did inquire about the food and the type of food he was on is not available in Idaho. I searched everywhere (even online) with no success. So the breeder recommended a very similar feed he also uses sometimes

Sweet dog, calm and confused the old owner could have washed him off. Sweet thing needs a loving home. He seems very old and unsure of himself, depressed.

You need to introduce him to your live stock slowly under supervision at first, also be extremely cautious around the children until they've had an opportunity to bond and acclimate and adjusted to your Homestead and animals. Good Luck

Blue is absolutely a gorgeous big boy! Little buddy and he should be best friends by now I guess. I assume the hips came out as being fine. Any stud dog must have certs up the ying yang I'm assuming for hip health. He's so calm and gentle, just a beautiful big hunk of dog. Btw, little buddy is so friggin cute. He must've fallen in love with big Blue immediately. Looks to me that Blue has a much better situation here, as I was just not too impressed with that guy you met. He seemed to act like Blue was just a piece of livestock to him. That's pretty harsh to say and I hope i, and everyone else are wrong about that. I know he isn't just some pet, and that he's a working dog, but that certainly doesn't discount the opportunity for a given handler/owner to form a close and loving bond. On a saltier note, I hope Blue doesn't end up having to kill any wolves. The nice thing about using a guardian dog I thought, is the ability to protect livestock without having to shoot any more wolves. Foxes are pretty amazing and ecologically invaluable animals too. Hopefully most folks can agree that predators are a vital part of keeping nature squared away, esp for all the damage we've already done to her. I hope Blue is exceptional at detecting, intimidating, and scaring away any would be killers of your farm animals. Cheers mate!

I'm not a homesteader yet, but I have the same problem managing my cat as you do with Penny (lol). I have to break out a favorite toy to move the cat to another room sometimes. Is there something that would entice a llama?
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 5 лет назад
yes! Llama pellet treats or alfalfa pellets
@daniellesduckheadhomestead3127
Looks like your little homestead is coming together. LGD are so docile but when something comes around that's not supposed to be there that's when they spring into action. They are such neat animals. Nice to have one that's already trained. Your sheep will be double protected with the lama and Blue. Just curious why didn't you buy your LGD as a puppy? Good luck with all your animals. See ya later.
@TheGrassfedHomestead
@TheGrassfedHomestead 7 лет назад
I didn't want a puppy as our first LGD because they aren't useful for predator protection as puppies and we need protection now. A puppy is better to get as a second dog for the older, experienced dog to train

That makes perfect sense. Thank you :)

also, of course congrats on the great dog! will you consider feeding him real food? since you're so concious about feeding all the other animals species appropriate feed (grassfed sheep etc.) it would be a shame to give that dog kibble :)

Hip tenderness exhibited in Blue? Big dogs are prone to hip problems, especially Retrievers, and Blue looks like he's got a lot of Retriever in him (classic block head). Oddly passive and timid. Hard to change families and social groups at 6 years old for a dog.

That's fascinating, but why not wash the blood off of the dog before making the transfer? Are there diseases in the animals they have to kill and what are they and how do you guard against that?

I breed akbash dogs for years, they are very loyal and bond too much with their Humans You should be given a puppy not a mature dog as it's hard for him to adjust to new persons is why he's sad Any way since you have formed a loving bond with him , try to show him as much love and in time all will be ok Don't forget it takes time for shepherd dogs to trust fully a new person but will happen eventually I love the breed for many reasons and wouldn't change them for any other Blue is a beautiful dog, and needs much love as he will show you the same in time.

A dog is like a child at any age and never forget there first owner like a mother or father. The breeder is a loser and dosent care or understand the feelings of a dog or actully all animals. POOR BLUE!!! It brakes my heart a thousand times over and over!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
