Cannot believe the last guy commenting on your booze and pizza intake, I’m 72 and live in South London and just wish I’d done what you are doing now 50 years ago.

Haha, thanks for that. We try not to pay much attention. Of course the toasts and dining out generally make it into the vids because they’re often for notable things and social things such as leaving St. Martin. We don’t usually show the 20 other run of the mill meals aboard the boat that week. Lol.

Everyone is entitled to there opinion, I don’t own a catamaran, I own 42’ mono haul. Right now in this day and age I just don’t trust electric motors when it comes to crossing oceans! The auto industry is building battery plants all over the united states as we speak and the technology will be awesome no doubt in 3 to 5 years! If i were you and I know im not, but hope you read my advice, save money get a used yanmar or something comparable and cross oceans with that till technology gets better! Love your show and want you to know im not trying to be a troll just my advice from another Buckeye that lives on the water!

Thanks and we appreciate that. I actually think the tech has caught up nicely with the needs of a long distance sailboat. That said, we really like the idea of one electric and one diesel for a while. It’s clear we can get around well and cover a lot of ground with one diesel. We think the electric can work well for long passage making when balanced with sailing, but if the electric falls short in a long distance situation, we have that fall back. And the maneuverability of two motors we’re currently lacking. No matter what, we’ll learn some things. Lol.

Don’t go electric. This trend sounds good in theory but is not viable long term. Get your motors rebuilt!

A thought to consider, if you are going to repower and are looking at electric motors, perhaps a hybrid system, fully redundant and very quiet and efficient.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
I’ve seen some of those on new boats. Pretty cool setups. Considering the age and male of our motors though, we’ll go “hybrid” just in the fact that we’ll have one electric and one diesel, at least for a while.

Hello Eric, Loren and Rivers. We were on the Lagoon 42 next to you in Great Harbour Jost Van Dyke. Saw all of you in dinghy as you passed our stern, we called out and waved but you didn’t hear us. You left later that evening after trying to reset your anchor. Safe travels.

Hey there! We did hear you guys but couldn’t quite make it out! Yeah, we had a lot of trouble getting set out there. It’s very rocky. Wound up motoring over to Little Harbor (where Peace and Love is) and grabbed a ball there. It was a bit of an adventure in the dark but worked out fine. Hope you had a great stay!

We wonder what kind of job opportunities you have lined up. Is it possible to re-power that yacht with a used diesel engine? An electric motor, more batteries and solar panels seem like a costly option but if the payback is there then go for it! We’ll be watching 👀
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
Thanks for watching! The system we’re planning to put together would be substantially cheaper than a diesel repower even with used diesels. As for the extra work we’re doing…that is still evolving. Lol.
@jeffw.6821

Besides more solar panels, you should consider getting a a propeller that you can either attach to the bottom of your boat or hang over the stern to generate electricity while you're sailing. Project Uma and the Vagabon sailing channels have propellers attached to the bottoms of their boats to generate electricity. The propellers generate lots of electricity when the boats are sailing. You can also attach one or more small wind turbines to your stern generare electricity.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
Yeah, we’ve seen some of that stuff. The other good thing particularly with a cat that has two electric motors is regeneration through the props. You can often get decent charge that way when sailing fast enough and even a little while motoring if using just one motor.

If you have the funds to convert to electric great! Buying a couple of used engines is a good option. You use the sails for propulsion so a used motor should last you decades. Battery technology is advancing quickly so don’t get stuck with a new system that rapidly gets outdated where your dollars would go farther. That all being said converting to electric would bring clicks. Personally I’d rebuild the existing engines as I’ve rebuilt a few engines. Pistons, rings, valve job, new injectors, gasket set, service the cam and crank, new oil pump and it’s a ‘new’ engine.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
Thanks! Yeah, unfortunately it would still need a few high dollar parts on top of a rebuild. And it would still be a 30 year old Volvo. We do plan to roll with one electric and one diesel for a while which should make for a pretty nice testing scenario.
@lifeisonedirection8105
@lifeisonedirection8105 5 месяцев назад
@@SailAwayVlog one engine and one motor will be interesting. Don’t worry too much about the age of an engine. A good rebuild has many checks to ensure the block is good. All the moving stuff can be changed. I like the one of each approach. Lots of issues with battery propulsions in cars and now boats is making it to the surface so be careful. Beautiful boat. Older boats have lots of timeless style and class. Works of art indeed.

Yep that sounds about right. You should spend some time in Brewers Bay. Probably our favorite spot in STT. Plus Charlotte can a great spot if you anchor right up next to Yacht Haven.

Nice crossing from St Martin. and smooth sailing down Sir Francis Drake Channel. Watermelon Key, one of the places off St John you can anchor in reasonable depth water. Good luck with your conversion of 1 engine to electric. As far as solar panels, my understanding is PR is a better place to buy, both price and selection. If you need to add solar controllers on a budget, take a look at HQST controllers, 60A output one can handle 3400w PV (w 48v bat bank) and good for 12-48v bats and runs under $200 and you can parallel 2 together. for same bat bank.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
I’ll check those controllers out! And yes, we’re considering swinging back to PR for solar, just gotta figure out our timing first.

Are you going to replace both motors with electric, since you also have a genset, or are you going to just do one? The Fish Fairy wants you to leave a fish under your pillow, then you have to deal with the smell.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
Haha…on the hook please, Fish Fairy. We’re going to start with one electric, with a battery bank large enough for two. That’ll give us a nice test period with the diesel as a backup.

Why not repair the existing diesel? Even if it needs total rebuild, should be a lot less expensive than electric.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
It’s of course something we’ve considered, but wouldn’t actually be cheaper. The electric route I’m planning s surprisingly affordable and the motor needs several high dollar parts that will drive its cost up (30 year old Volvo = expensive parts). Price wise we think it would come out fairly close, but we’d still have a 30 year old Volvo. On the electric option, we also gain a ton of solar and battery power which is useful in everyday life at anchor.

Electric is a bad idea man ,unless you have a big diesel generator behind it. I consider electric propulsion for river going vessels ,not an ocean going yacht.
@SailAwayVlog
@SailAwayVlog 5 месяцев назад
Hmmm…seems riskier in a river vessel to me. We do have a generator and will have a lot of solar as well as a large battery pack. With all that it’s a very good option for passage making sailboats. Sailing is primary, electric secondary, and the starboard diesel third in line if for some reason we outran our range (which should be very far at moderate speed) due to genny issues or something. In “short” situations the diesel will only come on for anchoring or leaving for maneuvering, then solar will top up the batteries while we sail (or genny in poor weather).

If you would not spend money on the pleasure things like eating out and the alcoholic drinks you could do so much more things on the boat , you would probably be shocked at how much you have spent in the last year on those things , I got my husband to agree we would do a no spending on extra things like that for about 18 months and we ended up being able to purchase a 2016 23ft camper with that money , he was the type of person to stop and get a red bull every day and eat lunch out everyday so he was shocked when we had $13,000 dollars in 18 months
