Evan your videos are the best out there. There is no other homesteading channel that even comes close to yours. You explain things in a very simple way but I always understand what you are doing. And you are always doing something different. Thanks for taking the time to share these videos with us .

Evan, to ease your hole boring due to hard/dry earth maybe this trick will work for you. You need a length of solid pipe about 6foot long and a connection fitting to connect a hose pipe to the pipe. I use old copper pipe but any solid pipe will do, at one end cut some teeth 3 or 4 or so about 1/2 to 3/4 inch long. At the other end attach the hose connector. The rest is so simple connect the hose to the hose end of the pipe, turn on the water. Place the other end into the dirt, as you do the water will flush out the dirt in the middle of the pipe. Using some grips turn the pipe180 degrees one way then 180 the other. Backwards and forwards while keeping some down pressure on the pipe. The pipe will slowly but surly sink further and further into the ground till your at the level you want to be at. leave the hose running for a while to soak the surrounding soil. Remove the pipe and start to drill, you should find that you can do all this in 1/2 hour. While your drilling out the first hole you can have the second one being watered. Thanks for posting

I had a spot in a pasture where they had the metal fence posts in a small square, not sure what it was used for. Only had one fence panel tied between them. They used just about everything to hold them to the posts like zip ties, to wire ties. And the fact they were buried too. Then came the project of removing the posts. My property is mostly rocks everywhere you look.

HI GUYS When I worked for the Ohio Turnpike we had a tractor that we had welded a 2 inch by 1 foot long piece of hard pipe on the bottom of a piece of rectangular steel tubing and drilled holes for connection bolts to pin the bar to the bottom of the frontend loaders bucket on the tractor. With the PIPE on the bottom pointing down. We would raise and slip the fence post pusher (thats what we called it) over the post and with just a little downward pressure it would push the hundreds of post we had to drive for tight of way fencing. It eliminated the need to drive posts like your doing with a post driver. This worked real well. Your a very smart young man and a great fabricater I'm sure you can rig a piece of 12" long by 2 " steel pipe that can fit under your FRONT tractor bucket. WE HAD A GUY PLACING AND HOLDING THE POST AND ONE GUY PUSHING THEM DOWN INTO THE GROUND.. WE FOUND THAT THE 12 INCHES IN LENGTH KEPT THE POST FROM SLIPPING OFF THE POST AND HELPED TO KEEP FROM BENDING THE POST. WE WORKED SMART NOT HARD. LOL take care and GOD BLESS. Ps Sorry about your pond...

With Tee post try cutting a 2” pipe to the height of the T pose do you want out of the ground and slip that pipe oh you T post and use the bucket on your tractor to push down on the T post that 2 inch pipe will keep your T post from Boeing you may even go down to an inch and a half pipe but you can also use it to shove it in and out of your post holes that you’re trying to dig to get the water to go deep good luck keep up the good work I in joy your shows

Evan, I think you are correct to have the fence gate swing out, much easier with a trailer. If you are worried about them rubbing the gate, just throw a 17 guage low sitting wire across connecting your circuit, and they won’t touch the gate. Good when people come in because they stay back. What kind of pigs are you thinking about getting? Thanks for sharing.

Easiest way to dig in dry ground is to use loader bucket and set on post hole digger for down pressure. Need two people and two tractors of course. Usually just the weight of the bucket is enough .

Using the title from an Ed Bruce country song, you just had your "First Taste of Texas" as you dug your gate post holes. What you experienced is what we, here in Central Texas, get with every post hole. I guess that is why the Belltec augers originated here in Belton, Texas. Enjoyin' your videos, keep 'em comin'.

Some years back I had to build 3ft retaining wall using railway sleepers. Twelve posts on two levels down to at least 18 inches to fit a sleeper. The ground was shale and clay up a hill. Only way to dig was crowbar and shovel and after each couple of inches several gallons of water down the hole. I finished up letting a hose dribble in overnight. Did not have to concrete Thirty plus years later both walls are still standing.

Hint, if you are able always put some pig pans with feed and water in your trailer several days before loading for butcher or sale and park your trailer with loading doors open. They will get acclimated to the trailer and will self load. Hogs are sensitive to light and they hate going from lighted areas to shaded areas and are frightened by sounds never seen a stock trailer that was very quiet. Banging and clanging startles them.
@drdulas5055
@drdulas5055 2 года назад
Just a few ideas and observations. The fill connection might be better directly to the back of your water barrel so the hogs don't pull and chew it. Augering the holes might go better with adding weight to the auger like strapping that piece of concrete on and checking the cutting edges. Thanks for your videos and I enjoy all your projects.

Hope you two had a great Independence Day Evan and Rebekah. As for that negative comment you're waiting on - Well, I don't think those pigs are going to do much "cleaning" on that big lot - however the goats would clean up the brush. The pigs will have small areas rooted out fairly clean but otherwise just pig trails. 🤷‍♂You are doing a super nice job on the drinker, fence and gate though ... that IS swinging the right direction👍. Looking forward to seeing those rooters in there.

Have you researched to see if augers need to be sharpened? Seems like it should still cut through hard ground. Love your place!
@gitatit4046
@gitatit4046 2 года назад
Tony they can be sharpened to some degree, but most of them have a removable tip on them (which does most of the "cutting") that gets replaced once it no longer cuts as well. Still, sometimes the ground does get so hard they just won't penetrate it very well, especially when it's real dry like Ean's seems to be.
@frrapp2366
@frrapp2366 2 года назад
@@gitatit4046yes most can only be sharpened a little bit, sometimes a sharpened axle shaft/ pry bar driven down helps get the hole a little deeper but yes sometimes soaking it over night is the only way to get down , sometimes its just like concrete!!

Great stuff! The pigs will be in the proverbial (heaven, not the other!). I use a ground anchor to help start holes - the large corkscrew ones, which work surprisingly well. Also, I wondered if that burn pit you mentioned was where they made charcoal? It's unusual to have a pit where there's a burn pile otherwise - if a pit, it helps keep the air out for pyrolysis.

JudithB We had chain link gates and the horses and cows would scratch themselves on them. Really hard to fix the bows they would create. I ended up running a couple of strands of barb wire in n out the gates. When they went to scratch it would poke them, and that fixed the problem. That would keep your hogs from scratching on the gate.
