Your learning something new, when something breaks you buy two replacement parts. One to install for the repair and one to store for future needs. At sea you either need to fix it or get a tow. Happy sailing.

A great tip for keeping the fenders clean if you are going through locks or other areas that are very dirty, slip a trash bag over them and zip tie it on. Then turn them inside out and use them for regular trash when done.

@pcniantic

When you get to Ft Lauderdale, drop anchor in Sunrise Bay, ICW mile 1062. Excellent holding and protection. You'll be in my backyard, if you need any provisions or boat parts/service, you will find it here. SAMS Marine has everything Hatteras and Sailorman is a marine consignment store like no other. If you need a slip, I can probably get you into Coral Ridge Yacht Club for cheap. Hit me up, when you are in town.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 6 лет назад
Thanks. When we were last in Ft Lauderdale we kept the boat at Los Olas Marina. We are having trouble with our Davit and thought me might want to get someone to look at it while we are in the area. And get the bottom cleaned. These things are very expensive up in Philly because there is almost no competition.
@pcniantic
@pcniantic 6 лет назад
If you need in water bottom clean, my diver charges $2/ft i($116 for you). If bottom is REALLY bad, he may charge a bit more but not much. He can also inspect/replace zincs, props, whatever, if needed. If the boat needs to be hauled Cable Marine here in Lauderdale does good work for reasonable prices. For davits, Marquipt is one town north of us in Pompano but I think any marine electrician can do you right.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 6 лет назад
Thanks for the info. We just found out we need a cutlass bearing replaced. It came out of the strut this morning. We had a diver knock it back in and we put zincs around it to make sure it cannot come out again. However, it is only a temporary fix. Hopefully it will get me down to Ft Lauderdale. I am not sure if Cutlass Bearings can be replaced in water or not.
@pcniantic
@pcniantic 6 лет назад
New Cutlass Bearings are press fit with a hydraulic ram. I doubt it can be done in water. Well it COULD be done, but not easily. As far as the temporary fix with a pair of shaft zincs, I'd suggest not exceeding hull speed until it can be properly repaired. Good luck. Jim at ICW, mile 1062.

With either oil removal pump they always recommend warming the engines up so the oil flows easier and quicker. But either way it can be a messy job when you attack the filters,, but using oil absorbent pads makes clean up easy.

Be safe and the best advise I can give you is, Don't be on a schedule! if the weather is not right, Don't Go! Wait it out!
@tryingnottosink9107

We took the Carver off the market after a short time. We found that we could rent it out as an AirBrB and make more money than it costs to maintain. Since we have it located in downtown Philadelphia, it books up solid. We still plan to sell it, if we get our price, we are just not in a hurry since it is turning a profit and we enjoy taking her out once in a while.

to tight the oil filters I recommend an Aluminum Belt Wrench ..... you would love that !! a quality one (not harbor freight for this one). Tight a big DD filter sometines need a little bit more force than bare hand power. Specially if they are oily or in a tight locations as yours. That tool is gentle and will give you piece of mind that not leaks will appear overnight on the ER. To the opposite, take them out a good Channellock would be your best friend !!!! Love your videos! One thing in particular I like is that you do not add music; I'd rather hear the engines, the water, your dialog; what's really happening. I too post some videos; short ones, mostly for 'family' use; the only music in mine may be the stereo on, quietly in the background. Don't get me wrong, I love music; I am a musician and play daily; But I unsubscribe and 'thumbs-down' the RU-vid videos with the blasting/distracting music.... I live near the ICW south of Belhaven NC. I'll give you a shout if I see you as you pass by on your way to Key West.... Safe travels.

Why 'running the blowers for 15 minutes'? You run on diesel, right?
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 6 лет назад
Hi William. Thanks for becoming a Patron! We do not run the blowers on the Hatteras because it is diesel and because I always check the engine rooms before and after starting. Although sometimes I run them just to cool off the engine rooms when we get to port. On the Carver we run the blowers for about 5 minutes before starting the engines.

You seem to be turning that wheel and awful lot, something is not right with that hydraulic system. I bet water pressure on the rudders is pushing the fluid backwards and then you have to steer again to correct. Try wearing rubber gloves to loosen and tighten the filters, makes a big difference over bare hands. And the oil change impeller, since it's only used a couple of times a year, try removing between uses otherwise a couple of the blades will actually take a set from being on the high part of the cam inside, then when you need to use it, it doesn't work right, been there done that.
@tryingnottosink9107
@tryingnottosink9107 6 лет назад
I do not have a frame of reference since this is the only large boat I have owned. I seem to have some issues when I have a following or beam sea. But it could just be my inexperience. Thanks for the tips on oil change. As far as the oil change pump, do you need to prime those? I put a new impeller in the pump and it broke apart before I could get any oil out of the engine. I ended up using a hand pump.
@brianbayer8589
@brianbayer8589 6 лет назад
I usually end up priming mine, but that was before I found out the vanes take a set from sitting so long between uses. I put a new one in and had he old one sitting on the counter, after about a day the vanes popped back into shape again. So for now I do the oil change and pop the impeller out till next time. Had a steering issue where I was constantly steering even more then you, it was that the valves were open going to the tower helm which was broken, push on the rudders and fluid would go up to the tower instead of staying at the lower helm in my case. Fact that you lost some fluid is a sign too.
@ryanh4889
@ryanh4889 6 лет назад
There should be an 'air bleeding procedure' on the label on the steering fluid reservoir. You pressurize the cylinder to about 25-30psi. Open the 2 air bleed valves near the rudders (on top the manifold block-it looks like a square block of aluminum with 3 hydraulic lines- port, stbd, and return) all the way then turn the upper wheel 40 turns right. The lower wheel 40 turns right. Then the upper wheel 40 turns left.Then the lower wheel 40 turns left. Then close the air bleed valves. Reduce the air pressure to 15-20 psi and you are all done! If you are loosing pressure over time you have a leak somewhere. Usually at the rudder steering cylinder but sometimes at the helm pumps.
@joegraceffo642

@@tryingnottosink9107 For pumping oil or fuel, it is best to use a gear pump. Rubber or even nitrile impellors wont last very long in that kind of service.
