See, I think the complaint is less "I was sniped through a wall, therefore the charger must be cheating" and more "I was given inaccurate information by the game and was punished for it" If the laser was more accurate, it would be a lot less of a problem.

No it’s cuz chargers flick so there laser isn’t even on u and in milliseconds it’s flicks so fast at u and u die and most of the time u don’t notice the laser still thinking it was next to u

I don't entirely agree with the second point. If I am outside of a charger's range and there's not so much threatening them, the second I see them go into ink I'll run for cover, assuming that they are closing the distance with a fully charged shot ready; with some latency involved, my reflexes won't matter because I'm already dead in their screen when, in mine, they only submerged. Also, trying to move between shots becomes far more difficult, as someone else in the comments said; you just can't reliability count the time between shots because, when you see one, in reality theres another halfway ready.

the real problem arises when, in a perfect world, you could count the time between charger shots to slowly advance, but latency throws this concept away. You're forced to guess if MAYBE the charger has a shot ready on their screen.

agreed,, i usually agree w everything this creator points out but the way i was hearing that second part, leaving yourself exposed AT ALL is a “mistake” even though like 75% of the map has you exposed. you can only try to make your way through mid when you believe the long ranges have their attention elsewhere, and when lag fools you into thinking so only for you to get shot through the wall you made it to, i can’t really consider it a mistake,, lmao

Intervals of a charger aiming at you can be minamized with proper strategy. Timing, distraction, aggressiveness all can be used to beat the charger at his own game

you're technically right re: lag, but it is consistently between 1/4 and 1/2 a second for kills, enemy positions, etc to register. It feels like youre not really engaging with the games mechanics to their fullest when you're trying to predict the future to avoid getting King Crimson'd by every enemy charger (or bomb, hammer, reefslider, rainmaker shot, anything really)

As someone who probably permanently has high ping because of bad internet in Southeast Asia, I am completely used to a 2-5 second delay per death and kill. My Australian friends do not help the ping either. Props to all the SEAsians out, I feel your pain.

How funny, last few times I got sniped while behind a wall, I went into the match replay, and from the charger's pov I was behind the wall. Their shot was nowhere near my death marker, I guess it's still my fault... please... -_- Nothing like getting punished for a mistake you didn't make, woo boy splatoon.

I should add, this is not uncommon in shooters. It's just how the netcode is for these types of games. Sometimes you just gotta accept the bullshit and laugh at it.

...Or, alternatively, latency caused your position to desync briefly as your movement was interpolated when packets weren't received on time, and they just saw you swim out farther past a wall than you actually moved.

@@HK_on_YT There are other issues too, like for example how you want to time your movements to after an E-liter shoots, but the sound and visual you get of them shooting does not actually correspond to when it's safe to move if there's lag.

Technically because of the way the network prediction algorithm works it can happen pretty often that the game "expects" you to continue swimming out from behind a wall when instead you actually stop short, and you're "exposed" on the charger's screen for the few hundred ms before the network realizes you stopped short and didn't peak the corner. It's annoying, but that's just a fundamental part of networked shooters and players need to know how to predict and react to it.

You forgot the third option: baiting out a charger shot. It's like if you jump peeked in Valorant and got killed after you were behind the wall again. That's not a mistake, that's the game's fault entirely.

Nope. I have several battle replays that demonstrate clearly that a wall covering my player is directly shot through. I have 5 stars on every single sniper except the snipewriter. I play on a poor connection and to shoot through a wall you simply need to flick towards where they would be. It's easy to pull off and snipers are just broken. They're not going to get a nerf. They haven't in any of the 3 games.

As someone who got upset at Chargers since Splatoon 1, I think a good way to understand both how difficult they are to use and how to play against them, is to actually play/try the weapon lots, it made me understand the weapon's pros and cons more than any YT video or guide could tbh. (Honestly, this could go for any weapon that's giving you trouble)

Nah nah nah, you actually can get splatted behind a wall, you can even be splatted even if you weren't in the charger's line when it triggered, and this is because the game is very forgiving with hitboxes, the line of ink when fired does NOT define the limits of the hitbox, and you can verify this very simply with video screenshots

most funky things i encounter are either dying behind the middle of a large tall wall to snipe 25 seconds into being behind that wall, OR, the more entertaining outcome, we die IN OUR SPAWNER to a snipe, jump in, then while back in play, the splatted by charger kill UI comes up blocking our view of our targets lol

Yes when you get sniped behind a wall, in most cases lag is involved, but no it doesn't mean you were exposed a few frames before dying and got killed for a mistake you made. Actually you probably got killed for a "mistake" you never made but the game on the opponent's side predicted you would make. What happens when you kill someone in Splatoon: the game prioritizes the kills you get on your screen. Ever wondered why there are so many cross kills on Splatoon? Yep, that's why: you killed them on your side and they killed you on their side. Technically someone died first, and maybe they shouldn't even have been allowed to shoot, but hey, latency, everybody could shoot, everybody dies. Why did the devs choose to do it this way? Well, because by design it's peer to peer so every player has to connect to another one who acts as the host, there is a lot of delay involved and you can't do that much better without using servers. But other than that, because it's more fun for the players: "You killed them? Ok, they are dead". It seems fairer, especially for a game where bullets are made of paint and actually take time to travel before hitting. Back to our wall and sniper problem now, what happened there? Well, prediction happened. The game is constantly predicting where every other player is gonna be until it gets their actual position. Without too much latency, everything looks smooth enough. Add latency and you see squids teleporting. But remember, the game prioritizes the kills on each player side. Yes, that's where you get killed behind a wall. On your side, you were moving then stopped behind a wall. Or maybe you slightly moved in a direction but went back while staying hidden all the time. On the sniper's side, the game predicted you moved further than you actually did, before correcting your position... oops, too late, you're dead! You did get killed for a mistake you "made" on their screen when you actually did nothing wrong. Is it fair, unfair, whose fault is it? It depends. Could be you for having a bad connection and not sending your position fast enough. Could be the snipper for not getting the other players positions fast enough. Could be host related. Could be because of another player not involved lagging. Could be because of physical distance between players (e.g. EU / Japan). Or it just could be because Nintendo are still using peer to peer for all their online games. Yes, the best way to fix this would be by having servers for the games and not just for matchmaking (plz Nintendo 🙃) Each game, instead of a player, a server would act as the host and holds the authority to decide what actually happens. And we would actually pay the online for something. Oh, and by the way, yes it's the same thing that happens when you get killed by a roller ambushed right around a cliff: their game predicted you would fall down while you were staying up there. TL;DR: you probably got killed because of prediction on the sniper side and yes, you still have the right to complain about getting sniped through walls 😎 But even if it may be because the sniper was lagging, plz blame Nintendo first.

Okay, sure, but everyone knows this to some degree. Sometimes human beings just want to complain to relieve frustration. You don’t explain to your partner why the frustrating customer at their work had a point, you empathize a bit, say “i’m sorry, that sucks” and everyone moves on with their life. I don’t think complaining about people complaining is a productive discussion about the game.

that's true to an extent but i think it's a different situation than a player complaining about a competitive game at some point the complaints get excessive from the player because they blame the game more than their misplays (which happens a lot in these games)

The problem is that this creates a schrödinger's squid scenario. If i exist both behind cover and out in the open at the same time, then why even bother going behind cover then? Why run to hide behind cover from an attacker if the attacker will still see the instance of me from before i hid? Just that there's a "reason" i'm getting sniped through walls doesn't make it any less of a problem.

The thing with lag is that you can't react to the chargers, you have to just assume that if you EVER expose yourself, even if they're looking the other way, you're getting sniped. That is IMO a huge part of why ninja squid is getting much more use in 3 since it's a huge safety net. since there is no way to never eventually get exposed. You inevitably have to enter the charger's line of sight and you cannot juke their shots reliably as if you try to time your dodges, they're just going to shoot you before you even move on their screen. This renders chargers a huge pain to deal with. So getting sniped through walls is annoying but it is the player's mistake. However, since you can't react to the charger and bait their shots reliably, you need flank routes to take them out if you play a lower range weapon (which isn't a thing in 3 unfortunately) or specials to displace them. Chargers can be dealt with, but with the netcode and map designs, it definitely isn't a fun class to handle, ESPECIALLY when respawn punisher enters the equation. This makes self-awareness even more crucial as you always need to understand what the charger sees and doesn't see until you get to displace them.

"exposed yourself to an angle the charger could have hit a bit earlier" seems incorrect. wouldn't it be the case that the charger would actually have the shot ready after you had already exposed yourself? in that case, it would mean that even if you were to move with time to spare, the delay throws that out the window. so in reality, your window to do anything within their range becomes right before they fire (or more likely a bit after they fire), until a random amount of charge that you have to guess they have is ready. there have been many cases where i can't even see the laser until i've already been hit, because they had it against a wall or the ground, or been using a charge hold, and it will swing to 10 feet away from where i am after i'm already splatted.

it's not sniping through walls that's the issue for me, it's the laser. I imagine it's the netcode but a Charger can kill you without the laser even looking towards you which is not great from the receiving end cos you have no idea when you have been spotted I'm not saying it was an unfair death from the Charger or that they didn't fairly kill me, they did and it was a fair kill, connection aside, it's the game's connection that is being unfair and i'm surprised more people haven't talked about this issue as an example for poor netcode

Charger lag doesnt annoy me but blaster lag does. Sometimes blaster blasts can be so weirdly large in ways i can never replicate in training. I can be hugging a blaster and their missing shot somehow hits me and other times i can move way out of their range and their blast somehow doubles in size to reach me. The biggest thing I have had was a range blaster hitting me from an entire blasts range away from the edge of its blast. My death paint was nowhere close to their blast paint.

100% agree. This reminds me vividly of a match I had in S2 years ago. I hid behind a wall to get away from a charger that just claimed a new position, and a full *second and a half* later I get killed. Like ya there's lag but come on

One memorable time I was "sniped through a wall" was against an e-liter and I was bamboozler (my main). The sniper flicked so fast that I didn't even see the laser, and they got me the exact moment I went out of cover, so I though that game glitched, but I thought it glitched and didn't show the laser, not that I got sniped. Recorded it immediately and sure enough, looking at it after the match was over, dude was just a crazy good sniper. I was super impressed, still am. All other times I could tell that I was just in their crosshairs, sometimes a bit lag was involved and got me confused, but it was always obvious to me that it was my own fault.

Agree and disagree, when i say i got sniped through a wall, it's because i swam to a wall, and watch the shot hit me as if i was a meter away from the wall, but my squid is more than safe behind the wall. Not sure if that's latency or tick rate issues but still regardless in a game about movement it's annoying.

@HK_on_YT sure I read it. A lot more of it is due to tick rate though. The enemy sniper sees on his screen that I've barely moved but in reality I'm behind cover. It's also why there's so many trades in this game.

Your last point was recently disproven by the now (very well) known Japanese video where they found out how it's possible to snipe someone behind a wall. It's possible because the game does movement prediction on the host, so even if you stop moving just before being exposed, the host assumes that you kept moving in that direction and you actually appear in the host's reticle despite not actually having moved there. This is then visually corrected back as soon as the host gets the next movement update, but being splatted still counts (despite being a bug). This is also the reason for janky movement when going near the edge of an elevation because the host initially assumes that you dropped down the edge even if you did not. Both happens regardless of the connection (LAN, WLAN, and couch co-op connection). So yeah, Splatoon 3's networking architecture (i.e. p2p) simply sucks and the developers came up with buggy workarounds to help with its inherent lag, which causes these kinds of inacceptible problems.

As a sniper and tri-stringer main I feel it from another angle. Sometimes I swear I hit people full charge, reticle is aimed shows the hit, and yet they don't get hit by any ink. Maybe I'm just flicking too much but walls are my worst enemy

Idk about you, but when I say I got sniped “through a wall,” it’s a lag complaint, not a charger complaint. This becomes prominent if you’re trying to time the charge of the shot, and it’s reasonably frustrating. I don’t want to sound like a hater but if I have to then so be it, content like this seems geared more towards self-glorification than actually teaching/helping.

There is actually a third thing that can happen. If you're approaching the edge of your cover quickly, then the lag compensation can sometimes show you overshooting it on their screen even you stopped on time on yours. This is a rare interaction but it does happen. You can play around it though by being more careful with that kind of movement.

Or, while your screen says you're protected, their screen shows a pixel of your character outside of cover. And of course, chargers can and will hit that pixel.

Not everything can be summarised into 'it's your fault as the player', I see that a lot and it lacks nuance and understanding of multiple factors that go into people's complaints, across the community. Yh someone might feel slighted because a charger hit a good angle, but in a game with this bad a state of netcode, lag prediction, and flawed hurt/hit box mechanics, we need to stop lumping the majority of people in with crybabies when there are VALID reasons for criticising this flaw with chargers, that clearly exist and are mentioned frequently. It's practically gaslighting at this point. Your reflexes don't matter sometimes. Your skill doesn't matter sometimes, cause as long as the game THINKS you're going to decide to be at this point, or your squid hitbox decides to literally spread past all the new stupid poles and 'cover' they added on either side, or latency dictates that your epic squid roll reaction time didn't do crap cause of latency dismissing it's existence, you can very easily die unfairly. These are actual experiences and issues that people have, and they weren't addressed properly in the slightest (claiming it's punishing you for a 'mistake you made earlier' is a pretty strawman conclusion/generalisation considering that often enough it's poor prediction algorithm issues or your reaction time not being accounted for on both screens...aka not an issue with the player). Yes it's a short, but please don't come to such a radical conclusion when these are valid issues. Toxic positivity and encouraging people to not acknowledge the game's genuine flaws in lieu of always blaming themselves and thinking it's a personal 'skill issue' isn't healthy, or fun.

That’s getting sniped over walls, or getting hit by indirect damage, but I definitely do agree, when I’m sending a shot over a wall to check if someone is there and then they just instantly get splatted I honestly feel bad, because there was literally nothing they could do, and those types of splats are almost never intentional.

in all fairness it feels a little unfair when my game tells me i've safely made it to cover, but because the dualies player decided to play while using a wax writing slate as their wifi router, the charger sees me as standing out in the open and the game counts their shot hitting me but doesn't count my not existing in that space anymore game straight lies to me and i get punished for it because there's one of the flintstones's neighbors on my team who hasn't upgraded their internet since the 2000s

I would argue that, in the rare cases it IS actually lag, getting “sniped through a wall” is still detrimental because you as the player don’t experience the immediate consequences. Even if you left yourself exposed, the fact that the punishment comes later means you aren’t going to register it as a cause/effect action. You’re going to see that you were behind cover when you got sniped, and chalk it up to the game being unfair rather than you making a mistake, especially if you don’t recognize the angle at which you were sniped

I'm never mad about it, I knew I would have died anyways, it's just that my death showed later than it should have;; but it's always funny to see a charger killing me whhile I'm fully covered.

Nah sometimes it's just a poor net code. The game thinks your still in view of the charger. On replay you see you were still in the open but during gameplay you were out of you. It happens sometimes.

Often times when this happens, I'll go back and watch the replay and it plays out way different than what happened on my screen because of classic Nintendo netcode, although I have found the tower to be a little more jank in this situation

I recently watched a Japanese person do a analysis of the delay that the other person sees, and they had one person as a charger, tested with and without Ethernet, etc. the game is constantly estimating where you are. A clear example is when someone is at the edge of a ledge and sometimes you see them fall off but then they’re back on the top a frame later; the game is guessing whether you’ll actually be jumping down or not. So I understand Gem’s point here, but respectfully, as someone who’s been playing since the first game, sometimes you literally do get shot through a wall. I will be well away from any place the charger can see me for a solid second and still die. It’s just how the game and its terrible connection works. Anyone who played it on WiiU knows how much worse it was then.

Tbh I did have one moment where I did pretty much get shot through a wall, or rather around a corner. Ran into a friend on Uma’mi and I approached the corner of the middle platform, but swam back and climbed the wall. In her POV, she did see a splash when I approached and fired a moment later when I was climbing the wall a bit farther away. Pretty sure I hadn’t put myself in the line of fire, but it was probably just an issue with lag.

I had a few deaths yesterday where I was against people and I just explode before they are even shown to be shooting, much less have ink actually hit me. I know it was lag and I just lost, but when I have 150 Mb download speeds and 200 Mb up, it really sucks to have lag be involved in a death, even if it wasn’t the cause

Also, times where I got killed, I saw the shots from the person shooting me, and then it credits someone on the complete opposite side of the map. Like, I got killed, 100% agree, but Jim Bob over there was not involved

the one thing i *have* noticed can happen with lag is that a charger can get you even if, on your screen, their bead was never on you. which doesn't feel super great but i kinda consider it one of many compromises that has to happen for this game to function the way nintendo has dictated it has to.

THIS!!! Also if you squidform to try and avoid a charger through a wall keep in mind that you DO NOT make your hitbox smaller, it simply rotates horizontally, the charger can still snipe you, so please don’t get upset or say than I’m hacking

This complaint is valid, why? Because the game isn't working properly, it's just BS when you clearly dodged something, only for the game to do what it wants, that bothers with the perception of things and always playing with a delay in mind is something that players should not do, the game is being irresponsive and little Intuitive in that sense, it's like playing a platformer and having your character stray from his sprite whenever he wants, hitting you with things that clearly didn't touch you The complaint goes for the game, not the players

I have to disagree with the second point being the players fault. I think the splatoon 3 has some really bad delay compared to most shooters and especially bad when you compare it to competitive shooters. Even when playing with a great connection on your side you will still run into plenty of matches where deaths will sometimes be delayed by a good 3-5 seconds. I’ve sniped people as they’ve run to cover and only after they are behind cover do they die and that’s jarring especially if on there side it looked like I hadn’t even been looking at them. There’s definitely a lot of people not realizing there hithox is sticking out but I think a big part of it is also the fact servers are hosted peer to peer and Nintendo doesn’t exactly have a track record of doing an amazing job with netcode.

As a range blaster user who's getting the double digit kills with host connection, I really do wonder about my lag having the unfair advantage being a part of why I get kills, but on the other hand there are times when it seems my damage wasn't expressed correctly and what could normally be a two shot kill turning into a three shot kill, even with health regen, and hearing hits on other players, I still get damage results on someone that feel a bit alien considering a 1 puff has a 50:70 damage range but there wasn't a kill

Whenever I get sniped in those situations where I know I was behind cover, I tend to have 1 of 2 thoughts: 1. Woah that guy is really good at aiming! 2. Dang! I need to move smarter! Occasionally, I feel cheated lol

Nintendo really needs to fix their internet issues. There has been multiple times where I have been sniped and the Lazer was so far off on my screen I often ponder if it was lag issues and delay time, a quick snipe, or if im hallucinating. This game is making me go mentally insane lol
