The picture does little justice. There’s no way to grasp the scale of a LNG plant without being there. I’ve been on site a few times at the one in Sabine Pass. Absolutely awe inspiring.
You're definitely right, Mastodon! Just like an ICS/OT facility, you can read as many books and look at a ton of pictures, but until you step onsite, it just never really clicks. And LNG plants, especially the one we're commissioning now up in Canada, are on a scale of their own as medium-sized cities!
Discovering your course on RU-vid has been a delight! It's fantastic to see you sharing this valuable knowledge with the OT community, especially considering how many instructors charge for similar content. As a perpetual student of everyday life, I deeply appreciate the effort you've put into making this resource freely accessible to everyone. I've already begun sharing your channel within my circle, as there's a high demand for quality OT content like yours. Keep up the awesome work, and best of luck to me as I aim to complete the course as soon as possible! 😊
Thanks for saying, Shaxadanwar2897, and for checking out the course! It's great to hear that you've found it very useful! And good luck with the rest of the course - there's only 25 hours in total, but I'm sure you can make it with your excitement level in learning about ICS/OT cyber security! Thanks again!
Rob's statement is one which can be applied to everything in life! Rob is awesome...but then again, so are you Mike! Thanks for providing this training...I am excited to take it!
Me as an IT person was kind of transitioing from IT cyber security to OT cyber security and then I found your these series of videos. Thank you mike for being a guiding light.
It's awesome to hear that you've found the course helpful! I just wanted to create the course I had when I first got into ICS/OT cyber security so people didn't have to struggle or be frustrated like I was back then! Thank you for watching!
I am coming from networking background holding Active ccie certificate in enterprise infrastructure, now I am planning to move in ICS/OT cybersecurity and this series going to help me a lot.! so, thanks Mike you are doing great JOB and helping lot of people grow in their professional life.!
Thank you for saying, Dharmender - I am really happy to hear you've found it helpful! And that CCIE is no joke! Congratulations on all of the hard work you've accomplished so far and welcome to ICS/OT cyber security!
Looking forward to checking this out! I've been in cybersecurity for almost 3 years now, IT for another 9 beyond that, and ever since finding out about the field of ICS, it's been something I'm really interested in hopefully pivoting into someday. The work environments and networks just look like a ton of engaging and fun things to work on, all while getting to help lock down some of the most important infrastructure there is.
@@utilsec I appreciate it! I haven't watched all of the videos yet, so apologies if this is covered, but do you know of any good free/cheap applications that you can use for a homelab setup for some ICS equipment? This pentesting book I just picked up to read after I finish my current cert studying has some hands on stuff you can do, but the equipment looks like it can get a little pricey, depending on the ebay markets. I thought some VM solution would be a fun thing to experiment with, and finally give my home server a little more to do than just sit around running my one Kali VM.
I really appreciate you sharing this information. I've just recently decided to switch careers and get into Cyber. I've been a Nuke worker in various powr plants for the last 6 months have been interested in how I can merge the 2 and have a fulfilling and successful career. I'm in a Sec+ course now. I know I have a long way to go but I'm willing to put in the work.
It definitely sounds like you're on the right path, Rasheed! And with your Nuke background, you are definitely needed in the ICS/OT community! Reach out with questions any time!
Thanks for the kind words, Xoxoxo! I still remember when I was just getting into IT cyber security and how each day adds up over time! It's great to hear you're still growing AND moving into OT!!! Thanks for sharing!
That's awesome to hear, thanks for letting me know! I'm happy to hear you've found it helpful! I have a few friends in the energy sector in Canada - maybe one or two of your co-workers even! Thanks for watching!
@@utilsec I am a cybersecurity analyst in a small company. Recently, the Canadian government, in collaboration with some universities, has created an OT security program tailored specifically for the Canadian energy sector. They need more cybersecurity professionals in that sector. I have enrolled into this program, and your course has been extremely helpful.. I've recommended it to all my colleagues. Thank you!!
Thank you for making this so accessible! I’m an early-career process engineer working in pharma manufacture, but I recently got interested in cybersecurity and took the ISC2 CC exam. I’m curious about ICS/OT cybersecurity and whether that could be an option for me in the future! From my experience, cyber threats are largely not a focus in process safety/operational risk assessments but they definitely shouldn’t be ignored
I'm glad you found the course, Sarah, and found it helpful! As you go through the course, let me know if you have any questions, but as you go through the videos, it should help you know not only more about ICS/OT cybersecurity, but if it is where your real interests are (or not and that's ok too!).
I'm glad you found the series then, @TheHarrisal21! Your control systems background coupled with cyber security knowledge if desperately needed in the field!
I am a beginner in cybersecurity and I have a degree in electrical and electronics engineering and Renewable energy and smart grids has always been something that intrigues me. So I am planning on infusing cybersecurity with renewable energy. I believe this will be a nice course for me, my only fear is that hope it won’t be too much for me since I am a beginner in cybersecurity. Thank you for your wonderful work
Thanks for checking out the course, Courage! It's always great to see when someone with an engineering background like yourself wants to learn about ICS/OT cyber security and how to couple the two world together! This course is designed for beginners so hopefully you'll find it a great help! For more ideas on how to grow your knowledge with an engineering background, check out my free eBook that I wrote before the course: github.com/utilsec/Getting_Started_with_ICS/blob/main/Getting%20Started%20in%20Industrial%20Cybersecurity%20for%20OT%20Professionals.pdf. I hope these help get you started! Just let me know if you have any questions as you go along!
@@utilsec thank you so much for your feedback. I really much appreciate it. I will go through the book and if I have any more questions I will reach out. Enjoying this course already. Thank you for what you are doing for free
Dear Mike The best introduction you have presented in part 1 that covers everything and very very well organized. Its really admiring and it appealed me to go through your rest of the parts for sure. I am really curious about CS of OT and I hope you would have shared a real good knowledge. A very popular quote "First impression is the last impression". I hope and wish so. regards
Thank you for checking out the first part of the course, Adeel! I'm glad you liked the first part and hope you find the other sections worth your time and even more informative. Thanks again!
Hi Michael! I was able to attend this webinar. I am hoping for the test or quiz you mentiones during the webinar to get the certificate. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi @yrikaretuya34 - If you were in the course, you would have had several opportunities to receive the link for the quiz and the certificate. We had over 150 people take the quiz and receive certificates.
@@utilsec I am currently a network specialist and these videos have made me pivot into ICS. I already read Andy Greenberg's "Sandworm" as I am finishing your course here. Your proactive approach to teaching this material has inspired me more than you can imagine. I would be doing you a disservice by not letting you know. Sincerely, thank you.
Thanks Mike for this content very informative and heaps of thanks for sharing LinkedIn expert references to follow ::::I liked you open approach towards sharing knowledge is key where there is Tribe out there from whom we all can learn and grow 👍
Thank you Mike for this awesome course. I want to ask you, which one of these ( IT or OT) cybersecurity domains have better job opportunities, pay scales and good work life balance ?
Great question, Skyline! At this point, IT has more job opportunities and better pay. While this should improve over the next few years, we're not there yet unfortunately. As far as good work life balance, I think that is more dependent on the organization you go to work with and isn't dependent on IT vs OT. I hope this helps answer your question!
Thanks for this free knowledge. I appreciate. Are there many opportunities in this aspect of cyber security? What's your recommendation for someone to pursue this path?
Thanks for adding! I put together some free eBooks to help answer those exact questions. You can find them at github.com/utilsec/Getting_Started_with_ICS. Check them out and then let me know if you have any questions after!
Hi Muttfactor - Right now the slides are available for students for the LIVE version of the course which makes it much simpler to manage. The live course, which is "pay what you can," is coming up in two weeks! Check it out at mikeholcomb.gumroad.com/l/mzcvb?_gl=1*d4brm0*_ga*MTQ3NjM1MTIwNi4xNzEzMDk5MzQz*_ga_6LJN6D94N6*MTcxNTE3OTE1MS44MC4xLjE3MTUxNzkxNTEuMC4wLjA.
@utilsecand Mike, Mike excellent content, i recommended this course for profissionals that are beggining in ICS security in Brazil for Earn deep knowlegde in OT Sec.
Backdoors & Breaches can be a lot of fun and is a great learning tool - especially with the ICS deck that Black Hills built out with Dragos. Thanks for checking it out, TJ!
It's a great question, and one that comes up from time to time, MS. Since you're just getting into IT cybersecurity, you're going to want to at least nail the fundamentals and gain some real-world experience in IT cybersecurity before moving into ICS/OT which depends on practitioners that have mastered the basics. I hope this helps!
Great question, Miguel. My favorite is the SANS ICS Summit every year that tends to have the most practical knowledge to help people do the job. S4 is also a popular show referred to as the RSA of the ICS/OT world. I also had a great time at the ICS Village at DEFCON this year and I'm sitting right now at the SecurityWeek ICS Security Conference in Atlanta which also has some great content. I hope these help!
A great question, V! My course focuses on the cyber security aspect of ICS/OT environments. While there is a high level overview of OT systems (e.g., PLCs, HMIs, DCSs) and how they work, it is not an OT/automation course itself, but rather talk to how to secure those networks. So if you're looking for how to secure ICS/OT, it could be a great fit! If you're looking on more about information on different ICS/OT systems and how automation works, you'd want to check out other content here. I hope this helps!
Hi Mike, what would you suggest for someone to start having a bit of knowledge in cyber security, system admin and networking, but having no certifications. Would this be good start to get into OT security or are there any pre-requisites to start before getting into OT security? Please advise.
Hi Mini - No prerequisites are required to start learning about ICS/OT cyber security! Would an additional backround in general cyber security and/or system administration, networking and others helps? Most definitely, but it isn't absolutely necessary, especially to get a introduction to ICS/OT cyber security, what it is, what it means and how to protect our critical infrastructure. I hope this helps!
Hi Abdelwahab - While no previous knowledge is necessary to get into ICS/OT cyber security, to get the most out of the content, it is very helpfuly to have either a background in IT cyber security or in OT/engineering/automation. Most people without any of these typically choose to learn IT cyber security. If that's you, then the best place to start is by studying the content related to CompTIA's Security+ which has tons of free resources to leverage. I hope this helps!
Hi Aditya - If you're referring to the free Getting Started eBooks, you can find both versions at github.com/utilsec/Getting_Started_with_ICS. The blue one is for those with an IT cyber security background and the purple one is for those with an OT/automation background. Enjoy!
