Andrea goes through a few of the necessary tools needed in order to get started in metal smithing. If you have any questions please feel free to ask and if you have other suggestions of great tools for beginners please comment below for others to see.
Tools and consumable items:
• jeweler's saw frame/blades
• Foredom Flexshaft or Dremel
• solder pick (my fav is the Ergolast from Pepe Tools)
• blade lubricant for sawing ( Blade Butter from Pepe)
• Flux for soldering (My-T-Flux, Cupronil, Smart Flux)
• Pickle for cleaning (Smart Pickle, Citric Acid)
• Bench Pin ( lots of options or like mine C clamp and wood)
• Charcoal Block for soldering on (lots of options for this)
• Crock pot or mug and hot plate to heat pickle
• Copper Tongs for handling hot pieces and taking in/out of pickle pot
• various pliers/cutters
• Solder (comes in wire or sheet form)
• Torch (Blazer GT8000 Big Shot or similar)
• a sturdy table that a bench pin can be attached to
• good lighting
• Various files

Hi. Thank you very much for this helpful video. I’m in a bit of a quandary as to how to catch all my filings and anything else dropped from my bench. Like you my bench has a straight edge as I’m using an old wooden desk so no cut out. I’ve been using a cookie sheet on my lap but this is far from ideal. What do you use?

Sometimes I’ll lay a towel across my legs but I’m actually very bad about catching my filings.

Curious, why do you like that one saw better for going in & out? Thx!

It’s so much faster to reconnect the blade than a traditional saw frame.

You would want 22 or 24 gauge sheet silver, drill bit for the holes, a circle disk cutter( could cut by hand just takes a lot longer), dapping block, flux, solder. I use a piece of stainless steel wire stuck in my soldering block to stack the bead halves for soldering.
