As a 35+ year veteran of precision reloading, the #1 mistake is to only have (1) loading manual. By having three or more (as many as you can afford), the ability to compare common data between manuals for the same load, is not only instructive… but invaluable. Reloading manuals are not set in stone, but are simply a guide. Be cautious, and conservative.

Awesome video as always! Very clear and concise info. Aside from empirical data, I really have wondered why FGMM always seems to shoot very well in every gun. When I first started handloading 308, in addition to the Sierra manual I took apart four 168 gr FGMM cartridges and they all weighed 42.4 grains on “MY” scale. Every strain gage based scale will have some form of hysteresis, offset, or non linear response of the Wheatstone bridge, and may differ when loading up to the charge weight or dropping down to the charge weight. As I’m also a mechanical engineer, and have my own pressure transducers, and high speed DAQ, it would be interesting to quantify the cumulative heat release, and pressure curve profiles of 1 grain of popular reloading powders: IMR4064, Varget, H4340, Reloader 15, and so fourth. I’m certain R&D labs at Hogden/IMR already have captured this data, but are not likely to share it with the public. I think this would also help confirm if FGMM indeed does use IMR4064, as it sure does look like it.

Thanks. This is great baseline/starting info. The Nosler manual does have a lot of detail for each bullet weight. One big issue for me, is their test barrel is sometimes a 26in and usually not a readily available brand and almost never in 22in length. I am a hunter trying to extent my ethical shooting distance, not a precision shooter. So for me, I find myself reaching much more often for the Hornaday or Sierra manuals for a more 'real world' recipe. And the powder manufacturers of course. Great to hear about the other two resources you mentioned early on - much appreciated!

Like you said, maximum velocity is not the "end-all be-all". I''ll take a moderate but forgiving load every time...good video!

In ELR you want/ need a fast load with exceptional forgiveness.

@John Beige I've found most load data to be super conservative even the max charges, especially for cartridges like 300 win mag that have a saami spec for 3.340" COL but most people load to mag length or 3.70" and above which gives a lot more room for powder until you hit similar pressures

I never knew Nosler had so much load data on their website. For that, I think I'll spend the few bucks extra and grab some of their brass. Cudos to them!

When talking about velocity and charge weights, my 30-06 likes varget closer to max than it does 4064. That being said, I would rather use 4064 for plinking as it is easier to find but I keep rounds loaded with varget for hunting due to the temperature stability. I would love to try h4350 and RL16 for my creedmoors as they become available. Neither my 6 creed or 6.5 has seen factory ammo yet but I did get some 6.5 140 gr Sierra match to try and give me a baseline before I start developing heavier projectiles for it. So far it prefers 120-130gr bullets but I’m not sure if it’s a powder/primer/case combination that I haven’t found that it likes or just my 1-8 twist isn’t doing that well stabilizing heavier projectiles

Good video as usual bud. Have you had opportunity to test any newer projectiles in the creed? Such as cutting edge, new 144 hybrid, any scenars, etc? I feel you'd get alot of traction as there is many asking for test results and review on these projectiles. Cheers

I did put a little effort into the 144s and didn't get results worth talking about. I am going to revisit them soon but it may be a while cause I have so many in progress at the moment.

@@BoltActionReloading oh I hear you, I've got a pile of different projectiles on hold currently as my new prep process is painstaking and takes forever, but whether the process is worth it or not, I don't want to leave it to chance that it won't work. I am excited to try the 144s, 136 scenar-l, 142smk (current staple), and 125 tipped lazers. Powders are RL23, RL16, N565. Brass is Peterson, hornady, and Stateline. Hopefully I will get decent results mag length. I mostly load single feed but some of my loads are for mag feed hunting

Always start with the published data from the manufacturers, never internet "wizards". Lee, Hornady, Lymon, Hodgdon, etc. all publish books.

Great video. Thank you. How does the process change if you're loading for an AR where you are confined to a certain seating depth. If you find good sd and es with a particular powder but not great groups. You cant adjust seating depth much. So would you pick the better grouping powder but higher sd and es?

I am new to this and may be totally lost. I can’t figure out in my mind how the separate velocity and seat depth testing don’t interfere with each other. You said you set the COAL to data book recommendation for the start of load development testing. Question, assuming you are going to do future seating depth tuning after you find you velocity node, When you change the seating depth moving toward or away from the lands, how does that seating depth change affect the results of the velocity, ES and SD results since seating depth changes pressure/velocity. Is the pressure/velocity changes due to new seating depths big enough to worry about? Seems like moving toward the lands would free up some case capacity allowing you to add more powder to gain back the velocity lost, then you would have to all start over. Seems like a chicken and the egg problem.

Hi Frank, I don't believe I stated that you have to start at the COAL in the data book. If you have any clue if where you are going to end up, use that. (this will come with experience, an educated guess anyway) I am using GMM as a baseline in this video because I am mimicking a good performer. Its very likely that groups will improve by adjusting COAL. This is a discussion among even the best competitors. which first COAL or powder charge. you will find people that swear by both answers. If its fits in the magazine I like to start at .020" off the lands and start looking for nodes. If that isn't a option start with what functions. How do you develop a load with components that are based on what you can get? Specifically, for my 308Win rifle, I was able to get H335, CCi #34, 147 gn Armscor FMJ, and once fired brass that I personally shot of various factory ammo that are of various makes (some military surplus M80). I do have a MagnetoSpeed Chronograph and just trying to make ammo that is safe. I have found some reloading data for H335 with various 150gn bullets but with different brass and primers. Is it safe to start there and compare muzzle velocity of other 150gn factory ammo I have not shot yet with the reload I am trying to develop and adjust from there?

Im trying to understand how to get a goof load is it shoulder bump is it my seating depth my load what does my powder load even do can I get better groups with a higher load or load closer to the max cap

Hey Fishlife, You should not be trying to attain accuracy through modification of your shoulder bump. Its just good practice not to over size your cases. .002 to .003 should be all you need, but you want it to be consistent. (from case to case and every time you reload it) You very well may never make one certain projectile work for a number of reasons if you tried every powder possible. Depending on what your options are it may be easier to get a powder that is in the middle of the burn speed for load dat you are using. If you want to have to generally pick a slightly faster powder than slower if those are your options. Depending on the application there are just some powders that are known to perform well in certain cartridges and being able to use that knowledge is always nice. If you have a good powder and are getting consistent ignition maybe play with seating depth then.

@@BoltActionReloading I've got components; once fired brass from my rifle (mix of PPU and Hornady separated by brand), VV N140, Ginex LRP (only ones I could find), and Hornady 168 ELDM. My question is where in the load range published by VV do you start? Should you start at the lowest charge weight and work up to max or split the difference and start in the middle?
