Getting Started With The Old RV - Preparing For A Road Trip & Overdue Generator Maintenance

Couple things... Loctite doesn't work well when heated, in fact a tip for removing things that have been high strength red Loctite is to heat it up. As for the generator exhaust, a trip to the old motorbike junkyard might yield the coolest pipe of any genny!! Might even be quieter..

Since the generator starts, put sea foam in the gas and let it run through. That cleans up a LOT. I've fixed everything from clogged lifter valve to knocks. Sea Foam found at most auto parts and Walmart. Is a tool bag necessary. Like a roll of electric tape, hammer, wire coat hanger, plyers. Two screw drivers. It fixes many problems. I have also added muffler tape to my pile for those sudden holes that occured in mufflers or the pipes.

Hey Dave, Tim and Jill here… :-) Hey on that exhaust pipe, what I would do is just get small metal tubing the size you need and bend it in the same as you did that flex pipe and I would wrap it also with the header wrap but the problem with that flex pipe is is those joints are so thin that wood being that close to the motor and then there’s a turn right there in the pipe it really heats that up so that speeds up the rusting In Deterioration of that pipe so I would try to put some small tubing of some sort solid tubing with the header wrap and I think your problems will be solved. you need a flexible joint on the exhaust because over time the heat cycles and vibration will cause the exhaust hose to crack, especially on a generator that creates terrible vibration

I recognize that “huuudddnn - huuudddnn” sound. Had that happen a few times on my generators. Clogged emulsion tube on the ones I’ve fixed. On a 2400W Yamaha, a #78 drill bit (0.060") was gently pressed into the hole on the emulsion tube, and turned with finger pressure to auger out the crud. I added an inline fuel filter, which prevented it from happening again. Good luck with your project.

I have the same generator and I'm 65. Never thought about when I was younger that 100 Lbs. would get harder to lift. And I have a bad back to boot. I also had to clean my carburetor to get mine to run right. May I suggest replacing the air filter after that much time that you said on the video. I have seen air filters on small engines look fine but somehow be clogged up maybe with oil film from the crankcase.

Header wrap holds in moisture when not being used. You can't use it on diesel heater exhaust either.

Thats how I make beef stew but in a bigger pot with the potatoes in it. I put a little flour with( soup mix) and or spices and roll the beef chunks in it then brown them in a little oil. Once they are well browned I add a bunch of water with a whole onion because the kids don’t like it so I can fish it out whole. I let it simmer all afternoon until the gravy is rich ,thick and the beef is falling apart, add nice big chunks of carrots and potatoes and once cooked I drop some dumplings in, cover and simmer for 12 min. DONT LIFT THE COVER while cooking them. My granddaughter called them ducklings which we think is cute but outsiders wonder if we are actually making stew with ducklings😂🤣. Have a good weekend camping with Russ, hope the generator turns out fine and it’s an easy fix. Bella is looking mighty fine with her new hairdo.🥰🙋🏼‍♀️

Hey, yeah rusted out from condensation from the ethanol gas lot more moisture in the ethanol gas than the regular old fashioned Ethel.

Pull the float bowl and check that first. May be dirt. Sometimes when I tap the float bowl of my Onan is clears it out. I’ve already used 1/2” heavy gauge copper tubing as an exhaust.

Your pot roast looks yummy . I love Bella’s hair cut and I think she does too . Stainless seems your only option , we have tried the flex pipe on exhaust and it only works for a short time . If you find what you need I would stay with the heat wrap . Stay safe , have fun , give Bella a rub for me .

Hey Dave viewer here, what year is your rig? I have a 1977 Dodge Mallard class C motorhome.. that had 84000 miles on it when I bought it about 5 years ago and I have gone through it bumper to bumper improving and upgrading everything mechanical.. and I took out the old Onan generator and built a lithium battery box in its place with a 3500 Watt pure sine inverter. With a Renogy 200 watt solar suitcase. It is a really easy upgrade I did have a Coleman 3100 w pure sine inverter like yours only newer model and I sold it after I had to replace the carburetor after only one year of use. With lithium power it's silent very dependable. Nothing to really repair or upkeep. I have 400 w of solar on my roof with another 200 amp hour lithium Bank and if that wasn't enough I have another 200 amp hour Bank and a 100 amp our house lithium battery. And I have a 100 amp hour lithium battery box that I can locate anywhere outside if I want to power up something all these systems have a 3000 watt inverter pure sine. So I can live completely off grid and never ever run out of power I run an air conditioner a refrigerator ice maker TV all the comforts of home and oven toaster and induction cooktop. So my 47-year-old Lucy as we call her can go anywhere and be at home. I really enjoyed your video I'm looking forward to more. I'd like to learn about your rig it looks like a short class A. Sounds like you got the ethanol crusties in your carburetor. Thats pretty good for 5 years of service. That stew looks good I used to make that once a week before I retired and beef was alot cheaper 😂
