Hello! I'm from Georgia, and I have two small boys and a full-time job, so I am looking for a habit that will let me make something beautiful while clearing my mind. I really appreciate the projects you post, because they are lovely without being overwhelming. That's a difficult balance. Thank you for your teaching spirit!

Agreed 100%. I've been painting for over forty years. I've seen so many of these RU-vidrs whose "art" either resembles a child's or is so so advanced intermediates would feel overwhelmed. Although I don't agree with everything she says, I do think she is a natural teacher whose projects are achievable to all whom have the desire to try it. That which I do agree with are her choice of primaries. After forty plus years of painting I've learned that's all one really needs. The great primaries, for me a great burnt umber is a must, and that's it. Her advice to invest the money in the paper is spot on. It isn't the brush, the skill level, the paint brand that makes it breaks an artist. It's the paper. Bad paper can discourage a beginner more than anything. I don't agree that one could start with cheap paper and then buy better later. The way a paper absorbs or lack thereof, buckles, pills, etc etc etc can frustrate someone so much they just give up. The better your paper, the better your understanding of color theory the better you'll be and the cheaper the ”hobby” will be in the long run. I really like this new format (RU-vid) for informing the community. The give away was a nice touch as well. The best we could offer was half off a seat in the atelier. When we wanted to see what the current fad was we had to get it there and ” pound the pavement" to get a feel for the "beat on the streets". Now one doesn't need to leave the bed to know exactly what's current, how to, what you need, hints, tips, tricks, etc. It's brilliant. One added suggestion, if I may inject here, look to see if your local community has an art league. Most do and they meet weekly. What's great about an art league is: they are inexpensive. I run mine for a yearly subscription fee of $45.00. That includes everything. Each member teaches their own medium and provides the medium for beginners/new members. They are usually full of professional high quality artists not far from kicking the bucket. We know we're old and we want to pass on what we've learned throughout a lifetime of practice. Say someone is a charcoal artist who thinks the sun rise and set on Charles Bargue. Just saying this is what you'll need now draw won't get you very far. In an art league it's very much like an atelier where they show you how to do a Bargue plate. Watercolorists show exactly how to this or that, etc. Best part is, the younger the better. We love the idea that our knowledge can be passed on to generations. Your children are welcome. One of the members each week is delegated to child care. Where else can you learn a skill with people who care so much they see passing those skills down as a way of living forever, your children can learn a skill while being separated by a room off glass walls, so the parents can have a little "me time" while still in visual range of their child, and that money spent on your entrance fee goes to setting your best work in an art show. Every year ever art league that I'm aware of hold an art exhibition where your work is displayed, your name marketed and sold. So now your skills are making you famous within your community, you feel like a fancy so and so, you're a star to your family. You are meeting new people and socializing with humans beyond a screen and your making money. Most works in a library, hospital, local businesses are purchased and provided for by local at leagues. I love in a major city so maybe not all the small town Americans leagues are the same, but it sure doesn't hurt to inquire. For me it was worth joining so many decades ago just for the day care and a little peace. LoL, I didn't mean that as horrible parent as it sounded.. good luck, stick with it. Don't get discouraged. I made my career from oils and charcoals. I was considered one of the finest charcoal artists of my day. I'm not being boastful. I only say that to show I'm no slouch, yet even with technical skill mastered, watercolor was the hardest for me to learn. I still, after all these years have days when it just doesn't work out. Don't give up. There is nothing easy about watercolor, but the results are well worth the effort. Good luck with your choice of hobby.

I'm from Florida and I have been playing with watercolor for almost a month now. I've always loved art but recently got interested in watercolor because of RU-vid. My family and I have been going threw quite a bit lately. I have become my moms caregiver because of illnesses that have worsen this last year. I had become really stressed because really I'm scared of loosing her. 😢 My body was starting to turn against me because of all the stress. I knew I had to do something to ease my mind. Even tho I hadn't drawn or painted in years I knew being creative was something I loved to do in the past. I honestly don't know why it took me so long to find watercolors. I absolutely love everything about them. I love how the paint can be rejuvenated and isn't nearly as wasteful as some other paints can be. I love mixing the colors. I love how you can get so many values from one color. I love how the paints sit on the paper and how they are translucent. I love all the different techniques. But most of all I love that painting can just empty my mind of everything except what I'm doing at the moment. I'm excited to learn everything I can about watercolor. Your videos have been so helpful and I only hope to be able to paint flowers as beautiful as you do. I so badly wanna try better quality materials. Thank you so much for this opportunity.

Isn't it interesting that a lot of people who "turn to" painting watercolor do it for stress release? That's what got me interested in the first place. Painters always look like they don't have a care in the world and have not one other thing to do than paint. And I love that. I also LOVE color mixing. It fascinates me to no end. It's a thrill when something really beautiful and unique and unexpected happens.

Amber, I hear you and can relate to all you say. I’ve always loved watercolor. My friend’s mom is an amazing watercolor artist and I used to beg her to teach me. She said she didn’t feel confident. But I started about 7 months ago due to another RU-vidr’s inspiration (Sandy Allnock). Then I found Emma and I’ve been in love with her ever since. I’ve been suffering the Benzodiazepine Withdrawal Syndrome for 3 years. Watercolor has helped me so much. I get immersed and my anxiety just stops. It rejuvenates me. And I’ve done some pretty decent paintings that people really like. So that’s nice, too. My best to you! ❤️

My mentor told me oils are like a dog and watercolors are like a cat. Oil and acrylic sit and stay where you tell them to like a good dog. Watercolors are cats, they will be good for your spirit just don’t expect them to do exactly what you say. And the more you fiddle with them the more annoyed both cats and watercolors get. So be patient, let water and pigment flow and enjoy the ride.

Hi. I have recently retired and have always been "crafty". I also took art in school and college and loved it ❤️. I even had items I did in an exhibit at school. I started watching these videos on you tube and love them. You explain things well and I love that. I have everything I need to start except a halfway decent brush. These don't have nice points and seem too large n the bristles keep coming out. I'll keep using them with my 7 yr old grandniece for our crafting. I've just been practicing brush strokes, blending wet to wet, playing with colors. But here it is 3am I think I'm getting addicted to playing. Love the creativity. Thank you for waking it up in me again, it just makes me happy. Diana from Ohio.👍🎨

So glad you regained your health and I hope you're still doing well. 🙂 I had to quit working several years ago due to a sudden severe respiratory condition and eventually turned to crochet and beadwork. Hubby wanted a hobby we could do together and suggested painting. Oil paints and media aren't very respiratory friendly, so we decided to try watercolor but it's a bit overwhelming compared to the oil & acrylic painting we did as kids. Thankfully, videos like this are so helpful for getting started! 😀

This was SO helpful! I’ve watched a bunch of vids on products, but this was the most succinct and to-the-point of any I’ve seen. Thank you! I had years of lessons when I was a kid and know the techniques, but have been flummoxed on the best way to take it up again (nearly 65 years later!) without wasting money on the wrong tools. There are a LOT more products available these days and the choices are a bit overwhelming. I don’t think I ever brought anything to my lessons besides a paper notebook. Everything else was selected by the artist with whom I studied and I don’t remember any brand names except Windsor Newton. I must have been about 10 when I started attending lessons given every Saturday morning by a local professional artist, a wonderfully eccentric woman whom I thought of as ancient. I doubt she was as old as I am now-73. Her studio was the largest room in a big Victorian era house, with high ceilings and big windows for the northern light. As a kid I found it fascinating because the studio was jam packed with all kinds of things. I remember that there were jars of brushes all over the place and that I once asked her how many brushes she had. She said she had no idea. But I remember her explaining why: an artist is always on a quest for the perfect brush. Many years later I ran into her at an art fair and she told me she’d finally counted her brushes. She said there were 473 and that she herself was surprised she had so many. That’s a number I’ll never forget. Now as a very frugal senior on a small fixed income, I’d be very appreciative of anything useful that came my way. I’m retired from a long career in graphics both in Chicago and New York, and now live in south central Wisconsin. Cheers, and thanks again for the help. I look forward to watching more....

Watercolours help me to practice, and paint wherever i am. 😊

I want to learn watercolor now as therapy because I care for my 95 year old mom who now has dementia and I believe watercolor would be so relaxing. I’m super excited to see where this takes me and so happy to have found you. I am from Rowlett Texas.

I'm 77, retired and have no artistic talents but when I realized you don't have to be good(there are lots of good paintings already) I got some watercolors and began a month or so ago. I'm learning, growing and enjoying my paintings...the good, the bad and even the ugly. I also have essential tremor and it's still enjoyable. Thank you Emma for your help in this new endeavor!

Unlike most other teachers you make it simple rather than difficult so that it is easy to focus on what you are saying rather than trying to work out what you are saying. You make it about painting and enjoying it, not about you. Every step follows the one before. I'm glad I found your videos on Y-tube. I've been working with colored crayons for years and I am really enjoying the fluidity of watercolrs.

Hello from California! I love painting with watercolor because the colors are amazing and I love the watery quality of them. You can get very saturated rich colors as well as making something look very dreamy or ethereal, soft or vibrant. I absolutely love color!!! I could work with color all day, everyday if I could! I'd love to win the free gifts because I am just getting back into watercolor painting. I started when my daughter was very young because the paint dried quickly unlike oil paints. It worked when I was a busy Mom. Now I'm just looking to express myself and have created some really interesting abstract paintings - mostly landscapes, but I'm really wanting to develop my ability to paint flowers!!! I love flowers so much and have always loved Georgia O'Keefe for her abstract flower paintings! I'd love to get really confident in my abilities of painting flowers and I love your tutorials which are wonderful instruction. Also your frequent reminders that you really have to practice a lot to feel confident with what you're doing. Thank you, Emma, you make it so much fun!! 💗🌷

I am in love with your work and techniques! I am a newbie and have learned so much from you. I especially love that you started from the very beginning with the puddles and right brushes. No one - and I mean no one - has done this in the beginner tutorials. It is easy for those who know what they are doing to overlook this simple step but for a person just starting out it is super important - almost the thing that determines if you like it to continue or not. EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!!!! Thanks a bunch!

If you paint landscapes, animals or people you might need some earth tones too. They are difficult to mix from basic colors. Burnt umber, siena and sepia are great for toning down bright colors and mixing neutrals when you need them. A better alternative than black even for the darkest darks.

Greetings, I am from New Jersey. I have always admired watercolour paintings. I have zero artistic ability and have never painted or drawn anything. However today I watched one of your videos Holiday Cards and for the first time painted pinecones, and mistletoe. I am astonished I was able to paint. Of course my painting doesn't look quite like yours but I believe I have potential, practice makes perfect. Thank you Emma for your video instruction.

Don't know if you're still doing the giveaway but I want to say that you have given me the confidence to try watercolor. I am a retired Veteran on disability and thus have a lot of time on my hands. In the summer months I garden but in the cold months I've decided to focus on my art (which I've neglected since primary school). I have been studying Acrylic Painting up to now but, for some reason, I find myself more and more interested in the subtle beauty of watercolors. I have been watching your videos and following along while you paint. I live in a small town in Kentucky and we don't have big art stores, but I have been to Michael's, Hobby Lobby, searched Amazon and several other art sites but the variety can be overwhelming so this was a good video to watch. I've searched You Tube and other sites and find that there are so many opinions out there about supplies. But I keep going back to your videos because I can follow along with your pretty paintings and I feel I'm really learning something. I'm not great but sometimes I'm able to be proud of something I've done and that keeps me going. It's so relaxing after working so much and gives me a great outlet. I started by using Reeves pan paints that were 6.95. Then I bought some Daler Rowney Aquafine paints. Now I bought a couple of Cotman tubes. Your suggestions will make it easier to make choices and buy more, little by little, like you said. I want to paint things I can actually hang on my walls. LOL Thank you for all of your video content-we appreciate it!
