It amazes me in trying to learn watercolor from RU-vid how many videos don’t include how to load your brushes and how to control the water on the paper. Seems like it’s assumed that when you buy watercolor brushes, paint and paper somehow you are supposed to automatically know. Thanks for the video

This is the only video I’ve found that actually teaches you about activating paint, controlling water on your brush and how to get those beautiful bleeds! I’ve been so frustrated since I started over a year ago. This new info will be so helpful. Thank you Emma!

The painting assignments back in high school were always on an easel. That tilt caused thin streaks of water to run outside of their desired borders and all over the paper. No amount of brush strokes could ever halt those streaks. It was frustrating, to put it lightly. Granted, we were never taught to wet the paper first. My brush just went from the water cup, to the tray of a given color, created a watery pool of said color on the other side of the watercolor tray, then right onto the paper.

You are sooo wonderful!!!!!!!!! You explained this sooo well!!!!! My language!! Not only that but you explained some of the terminology, which I’ve been trying to figure out. I am taking an online class for a beginner and they don’t explain any of the terminology and it’s hard to understand what they are referring to. Thank you sooo sooo much!!!♥️😘😘😘😘😘

Thank you Emma, this is so helpful. I never notice how little actions you make during the painting process can make such a big difference, such as not drying the brush after washing it to reactive paint, or tapping the brush loaded with paint to avoid pooling (I always scrub it hard against the towel, so no wonder why it becomes dry).

Thank you for another great tutorial. I especially liked the parts on blooms and bleeds. Your explanation of the science that make them happen and how it can be used to control their behavior is something that will prove useful again and again and may well rescue some of us from occasional painting disasters.

Great job. I have been letting my Facebook people know about this YT channel. It’s so helpful. I was having too many of those white ghosty marks and it turned out to be my sketchbook paper and my paints run toward the chalky side too, (White Nights). Also, cold press vs. hot press, the cold will usually stay wetter longer and hot tends to dry faster. All inferior paper tends to dry too fast. May I kindly suggest that people don’t dunk the tip of their brushes aggressively on the bottom of their water jars? Also, I just learned to dry the barrel of my bristles off using paper towels...it doesn’t always have to be dried from the tip. Thank you!!

Thank you. Yes, that was very clear and helpful. I definitely need more experience to get the results I want. This video helped show me what to change (water to paint ratio), what to watch for (how wet or dry my paper is), and also to try some higher quality paper. Having clear direction makes my practice so much more effective! 😁
