Hogwarts Legacy is here, is it playable on Steam Deck?
Yes! Hogwarts Legacy is absolutely playable on Steam Deck and in this video I show you the best settings that I've found to play the game with a mixture of good graphics and performance.
We need to bear in mind that this is still pre-release/early access, when the game officially releases on February 10th I do expect that we'll receive either a Proton update from Valve or a Day 1 patch from Avalanche themselves that will hopefully increase performance even more.

Those settings look great! I get the same stutters with a 4090/13900k. Hopefully a patch will clean that up a bit.

Thank you! Yeah seems to be a PC wide thing, apparently we're getting a day 1 patch today at the official launch though. Fingers crossed!!

Thank you for the settings! They actually made quite the difference in performance, but I don’t notice any real difference from the medium preset 🔥🔥 love the steam deck. In the open world it really works great. Steady 30

Yeah it looks great to me and I've been enjoying it a lot! Apparently there's a 2GB day 1 patch for PC launching on the 10th too so that will fix issues I bet

Great improvement over the default, fingers crossed wirh patched we'll eventually end up with at least all medium settings at a locked 40fps. Just fixing the stutter would improve the experience tenfold mind!

It's really strange how sometimes is sitting in 12w total draw (3,5h) and sometimes spikes up to 21w (2h), probably when the stutters are gone we will see an average of 3h of battery life with lowish-med configurations probably

Yeah I really hope that day 1 patch cleans things up a bit, don't think it'll be available for a few hours yet. UK Release is 6pm and it's 4pm currently. I'll likely do an updated video if things change enough.

Are you using ProtonGE or anything like that? I tried this momentarily on my Steam Deck and even with everything on Low and FSR2 on ultra performance it stuttered uncontrollably and couldn't even hold a locked 30fps. Currently playing on my gaming PC that has a 5900x/RTX4090 and even that is far from perfect and I have to run the game without ray tracing and at lowered settings to keep the stuttering under control and make it what I deem "tolerable" Edit: Just got to the part where you said your deck is stock, so now I'm even more baffled that it runs this smooth for you and mine runs like hot garbage lol. And mine is a 512GB unit with the game installed on the SSD.

Yeah it's weird, I've seen people complaining of 15fps on Steam Deck and that's just not the case I'm seeing. As shown in the video and of my 2+ hours playtime it runs fine for me. The odd stutter but still bearable. I think we'll see performance gains or at least the stuttering being fixed with the day 1 patch being released tomorrow on the 10th.

@@128KB After rebooting my Deck I was able to match your settings and it was better, but still quite a lot of shader compilation stutter. I noticed the Deck doesn't seem to go through the same shader compilation step when you boot up the game as it does on a my main PC. I'm getting 120-140fps at 4k on the main rig with Ultra settings, ray tracing OFF, DLSS3.0 frame gen and no upscaling. With a few other tweaks to the system it runs fairly smooth. Definitely looking forward to tomorrow when the Day 1 patch arrives and hopefully a game-ready driver from Nvidia as well. I really want to be able to play this with the ray tracing on as it makes quite a noticeable difference in realism, but unfortunately the ray tracing performance is very unstable right now.

I just got my steam deck and I’m wondering why my ray tracing quality says medium but yours says Ultra. I know it’s grayed out but still. What am I doing different here?

I haven't been able to get my steam deck to load into the game when I try to stream it from my pc. It just shows the loading circle frozen in the bottom corner.

You said it's limited to 30 fps from Wayland? That adds a lot of input delay, if the game smoothly limits you should probably use the in game settings for it

Came to say this, never use the overlay frame rate cap if the game has a limiter with decent frame pacing. Curious what it would take to get it to 40fps for the 40hz mode...
