Ever notice that when you buy bulk items, sometimes the last few to be used are almost worthless sometimes? Sometimes the last few goes bad if its a food item. Or perhaps you bought more than what you know what to do with? Those last few units of a multi-pack are critical to your savings as that makes or break your savings in buying in bulk. If you've bought an item and had the last few items go bad or had to give them away before it expires, that is a great indicator that you should not buy those items anymore in bulk unless your consumption rate changes.

At Costco here in Canada: it's often still a cost savings to buy in bulk even if you throw away 25% - 50% of the items. Individual items at the grocery store - especially fruit and veg is very expensive at other stores.
@BeatTheBush

Family Staples, dish liquid, laundry detergent, toilet paper, vinegar, cooking oil shampoo. Just be sure to know the price and availability at the local markets before buying. Super cheap source for shampoo is Beauty Supply Shops, for Toilet Paper, industrial supply houses

One thing that is a great if you have a Foodsaver. You can vacuum seal meats and other types of perishables. Meat is still great even after a 6 mos or 1 year of being frozen. You might do a review on vacuum sealers as buying in bulk doesn't have to be a loss. Eat half and seal the rest for later. Anyway it works great for us. Thanks for all of your helpful ideas.

I'm skeptical against wrapping things in plastic just due to my paranoia. I am leaning towards putting food in glass jars in stead like those used for canning. Or if you have stainless steel containers but seems like those would cost a lot more.

BeatTheBush depends a LOT on the type of plastic and what goes in it. Some plastics are fine. Others are more dodgy. Acidic things will leach more compounds out. But glass and stainless steel are better. I'm a bit skeptical that this kind of plastic use will accumulate enough of a negative effect, with exceptions like bpa.

Can you make a video on the Unit Pricing Labels in most stores (not all states)? If you use the unit pricing tactic while shopping you can save on nearly every item (mind you check the math yourself to make sure). Grocery stores use packaging sizes to trick consumers into spending more Per oz./ unit. I have found most people don’t even know about this fine print on the label. Thanx!

I boil a small amount of rice in a huge pot with a ton of water. Arsenic leaches into the water and gets thrown out. In the beginning I was getting mushy rice, but now I have it pretty close to steam rice....and healthier. It's how they cook rice in India.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
Not sure how that works but sure. I think washing it would get rid of a lot of it? Where its from plays a large role in how much arsenic too.
@balgrantango460
@balgrantango460 6 лет назад
True, you are right. Where rice comes from does make a big difference. Also, from what I read in the attached review study, washing rice will have little or no effect on reducing arsenic. The most effective method is cooking in 6 parts water to 1 part rice and then discarding the water. A lot of people eat rice and arsenic is cumulative in the body so if you find good info on the subject, you can make a video and teach a lot of people :) www.food.gov.uk/sites/default/files/322-1-599_LEVELS_of_ARSENIC_in_RICE_-_EFFECTS_OF_COOKING.pdf

The argument that vitamin supplements are not effective is certainly a reasonable discussion to have, but in terms of the size of the package at Costco, the fact is that many people take their supplements daily, according to a regimen, and they do use the whole bottle. The allergy medication I take daily comes in a 365 tablet bottle, so I pay one cheap price for the whole year. In many cases, especially for medicines and supplements, the price is so low you can throw half away and still save money. I recently bought generic Tylenol at the pharmacy, and it was about $10 for 48 pills. At Costco, generic acetaminophen was $12 for 1000 pills! I gave away one bottle of 500, and I have more than I will ever need until these pills expire in two years. I don't recommend wasting, but the economy in this case promotes waste.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
They? Who is they that use the whole bottle? I bet we need some stats on this and many many people actually finish it. Yeah... you really do not need that much. It'll hurt your body before you can finish it. You probably could divvy it up with others and only keep about 100 pills?
@trublgrl
@trublgrl 6 лет назад
People who take a group of supplements every day based on the belief that they are getting some benefit from it do take the supplements every day until they run out. My mom takes multivitamins, green tea pills, biotin, lutein and fish oil every day and has gone through many bottles over the years. It is probably less likely that people use the whole bottle of medicines you only take when you need them.
@creolan
@creolan 6 лет назад
I agree! We (family of 3) use up the entire bottle of vitamins well before the expiration date. We also stock up on things like Emergen-C and cold/flu medicine. These are things we never want to be out of when we need them to prevent the spread of colds and missing work/school. So there's value to us in buying these things once a year or every over year (whenever they're expired or empty).

I'm giving up on Costco. Aldi's built a store next door and one day I went in because Costco failed to have an Item that I buy every week and discovered Aldi's is considerably cheaper. This year my spending dropped by over 50% at Costco. I don't thinking I'm saving any money now after the membership fee.

Hell yes! Costco is amazing! only buy car batteries here. They are cheap, excellent quality and have a great warranty. Also, gas is usually the cheapest in the area, thus, paying for the membership. I get parmesan crisps with blue diamond smokehouse almonds and Duke's smoked shorty sausages. Makes a quick roadtip charcuterie that has little to no preservatives.

William Simonson - Living in a small apartment and not having a deep freezer, I would have no place to store bulk items or I would have to eat something until I can't stand it - like he mentioned. I might try it though for tissue and Scott Shop towels. It might be worth it for a few dry goods with long shelf life. I love white rice, but have decided to cut back on white carbs.

I have always made my worth with the membership...I get the executive one and have got back like 95-100 as cashback every year and the cost of that membership is 120...so totally worth it. Two household share the membership...so it is very effective..you just need to plan your purchases !
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
It depends if you buy the right things and compare what you would spend if you buy things at strategic and on sale times at regular grocery stores. I often buy meat much cheaper than costco. If you buy minimal stuff at Costco, you can try out this free method of shopping there here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4a4NzKEWy14.html
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
You cannot compare what you get back as cashback directly to the membership. You have to subtract out what you would have gotten if you get a good cash back card on groceries that can net you 2-5%.
@DeborahE7

I thought you might mention gift cards and travel deals at Costco yet you only talked about grocery items. Care to elaborate later? I’m interested in signing up for Costco again specifically for their restaurant and travel deals. I’ve tried saving money buying groceries there in the past and always ended up spending too much. I’d much rather shop in a regular grocery store for groceries getting only what I need with tons of coupons along with a cash back card.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
Restaurant is a lose lose situation as spending on them will really hurt your bottom line. So best is to cook good healthy food at home. Travel deals? Is it ever that good a deal?
@DeborahE7
@DeborahE7 6 лет назад
BeatTheBush - I like your thrifty style. Yes, buying a restaurant gift card can be forcing you to spend more. Maybe it’d be better to buy 4 roasted chickens, separate them out, and put them in the freezer for later for various recipes. I feed a family of 5 and my children are only getting bigger. I have my eye on Costco’s Disney family packages but I haven’t looked into it that much. I also really like how they have Sunday afternoon eye exams available.

One thing about Costco is you cannot "sample" bulk items like shampoo, flavored non-dairy creamers, or certain frozen food items. Certainly you are able to return with a receipt, but this gets old to stand in line over and over with each visit. I do like the Amazon returns policy. I have purchased and returned numerous tennis shoes and watches until I determine the ones I wish to keep.
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
You have a point here. I never verbalized this. They never really cook the frozen shrimp, maybe too expensive. They do make some microwavable stuff though. Returning is an option and like you, I hate standing in line so I avoid returning if I can.

@ryuen78
@ryuen78 6 лет назад
BeatTheBush these are items that are good quality and value at Costco. These are items that never go to waste in my household. Also gas is much less expensive at Costco in my area. These items are rarely if ever on sale. Buying in bulk also is more economical because it will save you travel time and fuel. I don't think we will ever know with certainty which foods cause cancer. Not in our lifetime at least. I hope coffee does not ☹️
@BeatTheBush
@BeatTheBush 6 лет назад
Well, burning food or roasting it causes cancer. But how much can you have with no ill effects no one knows. I do know some people can cough like crazy after having coffee since it's not the easiest on your throat.
@MK-ex4pb
@MK-ex4pb 6 лет назад
BeatTheBush that's cause coffee is brewed at 185. That's crazy and people drink it at 120-150, scorches your throat but if you do it daily you might not notice after awhile. We've been roasting and grilling for millennia. I don't think it's an issue. Everything causes cancer these days. I'm gonna stick with what worked for 10,000 years
@ryuen78
@ryuen78 6 лет назад
BeatTheBush I agree that burned food could cause cancer but there is a difference between burning and roasting. I hope the coffee makers know the difference. But I guess we are straying off topic. Costco can have value but we have to keep an eye on the wasted product. In general it is good to strive to be less wasteful in all aspects of life. Thanks for putting out good content.
