There are pros and cons to both systems. I lived in Germany for 3 years and loved their socialized medicine. Ten dollars for an ultrasound, every single visit?! Yes, please (this was in the early 90s when ultrasounds were $1,00£+ a pop in the US). But what's apparent after watching several of these stories is that the more complex your case is, the more chance it has of being passed off to someone else or the course of treatment being "watch and wait" in a socialized medical system. I am very privileged to have hands-down one of the best insurance coverages ever through my job--and with several health concerns, I need it. Most employers offer okay-to-good coverage (a high annual deductible is the dealbreaker for me--mine is only $100). The lower income band is where it gets dicey. There are free clinics, social programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and programs for those with children), and various sliding scales, etc. Juggling all of that is very stressful, as you can guess. That right there is where it can break down. But most of the time, our wait to receive care is *considerably* less than with socialized medicine. I think that the main navigation point w/socialized care is, as the patient, standing your ground and demanding better.
