Natalia A. was diagnosed with polycythemia vera and started getting blood drawn every two weeks.
But after a short time, she became extremely weak. She then learned her doctor miscalculated her numbers and was given the wrong diagnosis. After getting a new doctor, she learned she has primary myelofibrosis, a rare form of blood cancer that leads to scarring in bone marrow, anemia, and fatigue.
In her story, she shares her experience of the long road she faced before being correctly diagnosed with myelofibrosis, how she navigated extreme fatigue and other symptoms, why everyone should trust their gut and be a patient advocate, and what she’s doing to live life to the fullest.
The interview has only been edited for clarity.
Thank you to AbbVie for its support of our patient education program!

I've heard numerous similar misdiagnose stories. Some doctors should just leave their profession or be held accountable like everyone else.

Who is this first doctor and where was she practicing? People need to be warned 😡

Yeah...that first doctor was straight up avoiding a potential lawsuit by not calling her back. This example alone should be the spark that gets you to self-advocate--no matter what your health issue. This gal was on point! ❤

I’m so sorry this happened to you . That doctor needs to be struck off ( no phone call back is awful 😢) I’m from England and the NHS is getting worse but I don’t think America is better unless you have money and lots of it ? I hope your doing ok now sending my love ❤

There are pros and cons to both systems. I lived in Germany for 3 years and loved their socialized medicine. Ten dollars for an ultrasound, every single visit?! Yes, please (this was in the early 90s when ultrasounds were $1,00£+ a pop in the US). But what's apparent after watching several of these stories is that the more complex your case is, the more chance it has of being passed off to someone else or the course of treatment being "watch and wait" in a socialized medical system. I am very privileged to have hands-down one of the best insurance coverages ever through my job--and with several health concerns, I need it. Most employers offer okay-to-good coverage (a high annual deductible is the dealbreaker for me--mine is only $100). The lower income band is where it gets dicey. There are free clinics, social programs (Medicare, Medicaid, and programs for those with children), and various sliding scales, etc. Juggling all of that is very stressful, as you can guess. That right there is where it can break down. But most of the time, our wait to receive care is *considerably* less than with socialized medicine. I think that the main navigation point w/socialized care is, as the patient, standing your ground and demanding better.

Why wouldn’t you agree to a blood transfusion? It’s not a big deal, especially because your hemoglobin was 6??

Me neither. It says "the interview has been edited for better clarity"....It's all totally not understandable.
