A brief look at getting the obi tightness just right for iaido. For a really great video on tying it correctly please see Paul Shin's video here: • How to Tie a Kaku Obi ...
Hi Andy sensei, great explanation for what I've seemingly been doing since day one. It's quite smart to use one you're of tying method if possible. Although I use the ichimonji musubi to tie the kakuobi for dojo practice. For exams I have the obi with thinner ends which I tie normally. Also good to know when to best use which type of obi if someone owns more than one type. Keep up the good work. 👍
Nice explanation sensei. Thanks. I have one question: where is your navel in relation with the obi up edge. Is that edge below your navel? Is it covering your navel?
Hi Jose. For me, my navel is about 2cm above my upper obi edge but I think everyone has different proportions so this will vary. I think especially female budoka will be different in this distance as usually they wear their obi completely above their hip bones as it will often ride up above their hips anyway. In this situation, the navel might even become lower than the lower obi edge.
