Thanks for this. Your video gave clear and precise instructions. I was a little worried about how it works but now I feel confident I should have no problems.

Thanks for posting. Very helpful! I found a company that sells them online and the SIM will be waiting for you at the airport at their store location for pickup.

Good tips on the SIM situation, but do not connect to any WIFI hot spot that you see! easy way to get hacked! Also, make sure to have a dummy email address available as once you register your email, you might be subject to spam like crazy.

For my half Japanese daughter's Nihongo skills, we travel to Japan at least once a year [ she is 13 & has 28 stamps in her passport]. Most visits are 4 weeks- ish & I rent pocket wifi [ with " unlimited" = lots of data ]. Now that daughter is independent enough to get around on her own, we now rent 2 sometimes 3 Pocket wif ,... = ¥¥¥¥. So I thought it would be economical to BUY one pocket wifi & rent another, buying a sim card for the one I own. We usually message [ Line ] + Google maps + a little general Google-ing + watch  TV via the pocket wifi so use 4-5 Gb a day ! I could NOT figure out how to get a sim card for MY pocket wifi which gave enough / lots of data. Can anyone assist - ie a sim card like one would get in a rental pocket wifi.

My friend has a pocket wifi for sale. I'd like to buy it but I'm not sure about connecting service options. All of the advice I can find online is geared to visitors. I'm a longterm resident and I'll only need the service not the device. Any ideas as to which companies I should consider? Thanks in advance.

When using a SIM, people should realize there is a very important thing not mentioned here, and that if you need to make sure your phone uses the right frequencies for whatever network you want to use in Japan. A SIM card doesn't give your phone new frequencies. You may be stuck using an old 3G (or slower!) speed. You also don't get a Japanese phone number this way. If you need a Japanese phone number, the advice I've read is to rent a dumb phone for your time there, and use the travel SIM for the smartphone.

When I was in Japan I got lucky because my T-Mobile has unlimited international data so I had no problem at all with my internet. All I had to do was make sure Data Roaming was turned on in my phone settings. However all of the Airbnbs I stayed in offered Wi-Fi Hotspots here was useful for my friends who were with me and didn't have T-Mobile.

We hear T-mobile (US) has excellent international data plans - free data roaming in Japan is pretty rare!

Germany is quite backwards in general. Electricity costs about 6 to 10 times as much as in North America and Asia. We're all forced to pay for state funded propaganda (which claims to be objective and neutral) under the same law that was introduced by Hitler. Taxes are outrageous (60% and higher if you're self-employed). It might be a wealthy country, but it's a shitshow nonetheless, can not recommend living here unless you're a refugee whose life is threatened.

+Fabricio_Dourado should be pretty much okay any unlocked smartphone. Note it has to be unlocked, so it's not tied to any specific carrier.

Thank you so much for this video. I am picking up my WIFI device at the airport. I am assuming i do not need a SIM card if i am using the WIFI pocket correct? Thank you!
@tokyocheapo
@tokyocheapo 6 лет назад
Yes, Very likely the wifi device has a SIM and is ready to use. A rental wifi device would be utterly useless if it didn’t have a SIM card!

Ive been having a hell of a time getting a working internet. Besides the 1 hour explanation of useless information that I inform them I already know, it is nowhere near the speeds they promise. In fact, they said I used 10 gb but literally I couldn’t even get the internet to allow me to connect and work. I called the service provider 4 times and they said “this is normal” and I am like “normal to not be able to connect? Really?” So I returned it and they still charged me for it. So I wasted 6000 yen in total on a WiFi that didn’t work at all and ended up returning it in 2 days. So Yeah, Japan internet sucks now

Pocket WiFi vs Sim? I've looked around and everyone says that pocket wifis are able to throttle your bandwidth and send you to dial up if you use too much at once even if you don't go over your daily limit :/

+Master Chef check out the mobile WiFi options this article on our site: tokyocheapo.com/business/internet/connecting-to-wifi-in-japan/ The ninja WiFi provider has unlimited data (and 20% off for TokyoCheapo readers)

Tokyo Cheapo Thanks for replying back so quick. But I read through Ninja WiFi and their first clause is the one I mentioned. "Please note that excessive volumes of communication (exceeding 3 GB per day) of use of services offered may lead to slower connection speeds or suspensions of connection." So basically, if I'm in Japan I'd be good in the day time but if we wanted to watch a movie off amazon or Netflix or Now TV even RU-vid, after a few streams it would be cut off.

+Adrianna Lopez for mobile data, there's great 4G coverage in cities. Fiber connections are very fast and reliable in Japan, not many countries with better facilities, though older building may have slower broadband and no fiber
