As its pointed out in the comments the official term is Private Pilot Certificate. I used license in this case for those who are starting to look at what it takes to become a pilot. Thanks to everyone who has enjoyed the video!
@JimzUTubeVids
@JimzUTubeVids 6 лет назад
The FAA does not issue "licenses". With some examiners or with an FAA Inspector, you will fail your oral exam. (The question is, "Under which part are you given privilege and authority to fly, and what is proof of that privilege?" Say "license and you are done.) A pilot certificate issued by the FAA will not expire and any type ratings will remain on the certificate until surrendered. Be proud of your certificate. We are NOT EASA (Europe), Transport Canada, or DGAC (Mexico and most of South America) all of which issue "licenses" that expire. Pilots from those places are quite envious of the U.S. system. "PPL" is a throw back to the JAA which preceded EASA.

Would it be better to get your pilots license in high school or college because I am deciding when it would be the most convenient because the college I want to go to has a really good flight school.

♧ Thanks for a great video. Here are a few questions for anyone who's a pilot. Can you help me understand? On the FAA Knowledge Test I know there are 60 questions and have 120 Minutes to answer them. What about the oral questions during the check ride? How many questions are there? What are the topics? How much time do I have to answer them? What materials can I use to answer these questions if any? 🛩

Took my ground school in the winter of 1963, and went to the FAA testing site, and took my written before any flight time. I lucked out and passed my test. By the time August of 1965 came around. I had passed my flight test, and received my Certificate, at about the 65th hour. It was a childhood dream of mine, and I finally did it with another friend. Three of us bought a Stearman in the winter of '64, and learned to fly it. Had no problem flying any other tail dragger after that! I bought a 1948 Bonanza in the winter of 1965, in New Jersey, and was locked there by weather for nearly a week. I flew it every day, until the trip back home to NE Ohio. Never had training in a Bonanza, but found it very easy to fly. In the Spring of 1966, six of us bought a Republic SeaBee, and kept it at Sudbury, Canada, by permission. My friend had an island in the SouthEast arm of Lake Tamagami. Had about 250 hours in the Bee, and never got my Seaplane rating. I did take two hours of instruction at Miami Seaplane Base. I was lucky to have an FBO that let me fly anything, anytime, he had a lot of trust in me. I sure enjoyed the twenty years of flying I did, and would not trade it for anything. Hope someone enjoys my story!

I was indoctrinated with News reels, and radio news of combat pilots and aces, during the second world war. They often showed dog fight films in the movies and that really put the seed in me. The time came where I wasn't working, but had saved, and saved over the years, and winter of 1963 was the time, out of work with a lot of time to learn to fly! The Bonanza was like flying a fighter plane, with the great maneuvering she had. The Stearman was another thing, I learned aerobatics with it, and tried to destroy it in the air, to no avail ! I loved that airplane 13 G's positive and 11 G's negative. It had the standard 220 Continental radial in her, but I wished it had a 450 P&W! I'm 81 now, and still dream of flying. I heard of an ultra-light, and went to a couple shows, but these things were junk, held together with baling wire. I should have kept up, because they came out with real airplanes after a while. I know I would have built one, but like I said, I didn't keep up with the progress! My Loss!

I live in the UK and therefore gained my PPL under Civil Aviation Authority rules. When I did my two-hour practical flight test with a CAA examiner I felt I was doing reasonably well. The examiner must have sensed my satisfaction as three-quarters of the way through he hit me with a wobbler by exclaiming "fire in the cockpit! fire in the cockpit!". I knew all I had to do was to find the fire extinguisher but could I remember where it was? No! He then pointed to the little red cylinder under my seat. What a chump I'd been. When we landed I taxied to the parking area. We both sat in silence for five minutes while he completed his paperwork. I even recall the windows were starting to mist up. Eventually he spoke and said "congratulations - you've passed". I could hardly believe it.

Sounds daunting, difficult and hard. Looking back to the beautiful day on 5/5/65 it was worth all the work. I really did well, even better than I thought. With that signature in my flight log book I walked out to the Cessna 172. My dream had come true and my head must have been a big as the airport until...the 172 wouldn’t start! After a number of tries the Examiner came over to and said, “You might try going full rich on your mixture.” OOPs - he was right and my head suddenly shrunk to the size of the head of a pin! That memory is still fresh and and painful, but it taught me a lot.

It all depends on what you want to do in aviation! If your aspiration is just to fly for pleasure, and get a PPL (and maybe even the other ratings and certificates: Instrument, multi, commercial, CFI, ATP), you can do it at *ANY* age! Even if you're in your 70s, provided you're in reasonably good health and can pass the required medical! Even if you aspire to pursue aviation professionally (that is, become an AIRLINE PILOT), the unprecedented pilot shortage now, means that you can still do it at a pretty late age! I would say, even all the way into your late 40s to early 50s, because of the mandatory retirement age of 65 for the airlines. But professional aviation is much more than just the airlines. One could be a corporate pilot, flight instructor and a hundred other such things, and there is no mandatory retirement age for those things. So you could get into aviation at any age, to pursue a career in those!

It should be said that the 40 hours is the FAA minimum, but the average student will take 50-55 hours. This way students can better estimate what it will cost. You should also mention in the initial requirements, you must be able to obtain at least a 3rd class medical. Those with diabetes will have particular challenges getting one without a Special Issuance.

COMPLETELY TRUE! Certificate is the correct term and is what should be used. Honestly though, saying certificate when I did was a accident. I was purposely using license in this situation because most people outside of aviation refer to it as a license. Since the video was mostly geared towards them it made sense in my mind. But a good catch and correction none the less! Thank you Dave!

Before it all started during casual conversation and introductions, I mentioned when I got my private license.... he sternly corrected me that the United States does not issue pilots licenses, they issue pilot certificates. Needless to say, I will never forget that. I did pass, despite the stern correction.

Hi, great video, packed jammed with information! I still have a few questions/ confirmation to ask if you don't mind: 1) Are the requirements (age, English, medical, eye-sight, etc) the same/similar all over the world? 2) To start as a student licence and work towards your PPL, you can just go to a flight school or instructor, right? No need to take an entrance exam, get selected by your school, etc right? 3) What are the subjects that I should focus on in school in order to have a slight headstart in working towards the PPL? The answer to this question is probably quite obvious, but just in case... 4) Yeah, I know this channel is about general aviation, but do you guys have things to share on how to get a commercial pilot's licence? I could really use some. Thanks for taking the time to help answer my questions. This video was very good nevertheless, thank you!
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 5 лет назад
Everywhere is a little different as far as age and medical standards. I don’t know them all off hand so you would have to check in your area. Most flight schools don’t have a entrance exam, to my knowledge. You can start training in the US and log time without a student pilot certificate or medical. You need them before you can solo though, and obviously before you take the checkride. Last, the PPL has its own knowledge set, in my opinion. But subjects that help with critical thinking and risk management would be great.

Depends on the student, and the area in which the training is conducted. If out of a large airport, you'll burn Hobbs time just taxing around. I was signed off for solo at 9 hrs, check ride for Private at 55, out of KABQ. Spent a LOT of time on the ground. Rentals don't care if you're airborne or not...you pay by engine time.

@747-pilot
@747-pilot 6 лет назад
You will see all kinds of "averages" bandied around. The REAL average is around 75 to 80 hours (I read it at some official place, but can't recall right now). Like you stated, virtually no one does it in 40 hours and there is nothing "special" about doing it "quickly". At the end of the day, it all depends on what your actual skills are! I've seen a couple of people who got it done in 50-ish hours, and one of them was a terrible pilot (I would NEVER fly with him, if my life depended on it - and BTW it does! 😂 ). And then, I've seen people who got their PPL in 90 to 100 hours, who's piloting skills are outstanding. So it means jack, either way! Same thing applies to how quickly one solos! I know of one experienced 777 captain with a major airline today, who not only took over 100 hours to get his PPL, but FAILED both his Private and Instrument checkrides on his first attempt. And he is a Safety and Training Captain (Check Captain) at that airline, to boot!!! How many hours one takes depends on tons of factors, one of the most relevant being *_HOW OFTEN_* one trains. If someone does it in "stops and starts" over say 2 years, then I wouldn't be surprised if they take 100 to 150 hours. On the other hand someone who trains 4 times a week, and finishes their training in 3 to 4 months, has a high likelihood of finishing at the lower end of that national average!

My grandfather on my dad's side of the family in Panama City Beach, Florida was a pilot and he flew airplanes and after a few years later he and my grandmother had a seaplane business that first opened in 1995. In 2011, they sold the business because he had a heart attack and the doctor said he wouldn't be able to fly anymore which made him sad. After that he got a part time job at Pier Park keeping the grounds clean and about 2 years ago, he had surgery on his hip because he was on a ladder and he fell.

Question! I have ~25 hours from over 10 years ago. Of course I still have tons to learn and don't expect to obtain my PPL at 40 hours, but can these hours "technically" be used towards the requirements? They are logged in a flight book by a CFI with details as to time spent, landings completed and other flight maneuvers. CFI can be contacted to confirm if necessary. I'm really just looking for a technical answer. Thank you!
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 6 лет назад
I'm not a technical person, but officially logged hours never expire! As long as your instructor signed each entry you're good to go! The technical explanation can be found by googling 14 CFR 61.51.

@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 5 лет назад
It's the same reason we do a little instrument practice. Even though you may not plan to get an instrument rating knowing the basics of how it works is helpful in case you find yourself in a position you need it. Even though you may not plan to do night flying, you may find yourself in a situation where you are. Such as you planned to land at dusk, but the airport is closed because of an accident and you have to land at your backup airport, which now requires you to fly at night. A lot of your training is to prepare you for what could happen. Also, you can fly at night under VFR, its not strictly and IFR thing.
@Rexy3388
@Rexy3388 5 лет назад
You may obtain a sports licence and it won't require the night time flying. You would only be able to have 1 passenger and prohibited from flying at night. Also restrictions on the type of planes you can fly. Also costs thousands less than the PPL or PPC.

Daniel, it depends on how the medical examiner you use administers the audio test. I'm so glad I got my PP license in 1969 after doing my first solo at age 16 one week before my 17th birthday. It cost $16.00/hr for the C-150 and $6.00 for the instructor. I soloed in 12.3 hours and got my PP license in 42.3 hours. This was in the New York metro area before there were Classes of airspace. In fact, when I was training there wasn't even a TCA. Does anybody recall what a TCA was? I went on to get my commercial at 200 hours and my flight instructor about 30 hours after that. Then I got my instrument rating with another 40 hours. When did I truly learn to fly? After about 500 hours of teaching other students. And that was only the beginning. I feel sorry today for people who want to learn to fly. I learned in C-150s which are slightly overweight to be considered what was once called "ultralight" aircraft. If I were a young kid today, I would wonder If I'd want to spend the money to become a private pilot just to fly around the local area. But at least the FAA has seen fit to allow the ability to obtain a license for ultralight aircraft where only a driver's license is enough to fly. But if you don't need to fly in a congested area, go move out west and fly where it is uncongested. Spend a lot less money to get your certificates then go get some training in a congested place. To me, why spend all that money to get your PP license in 150 hours in a congested area, when you can do the same elsewhere? Get your certificates first, then expose yourself to the congested areas. All my humble opinion.

What materials can I use to answer these questions if any?..🛩
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 5 лет назад
The oral questions will be separate from the checkride and not happen at the same time (because that would be intimidating as all get out). The Oral goes over things from the written, and things that may not be. It's more about applying the knowledge you learned. The oral is more like a discussion and you'll most likely have to come prepared with a flight plan for a cross country trip with all the information required to complete it. A good resource for questions would be this book: amzn.to/2T9aD7u You may find it very helpful.

@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 6 лет назад
For a Private Pilot you need to have 20/40 vision. The key worlds they use are “with or without correction.” In your medical exam they will test each eye to see where your at. If you need corrective lenses or contacts to meet the requirement, they simply put that on your medical certificate. When you go to get your medical exam, do not wear contacts and bring your glasses.

About 15 years ago, I went to an aviation medical examiner for a medical. I had cataracts as a toddler, so without my glasses my vision is non-existent. With them, my worst eye was about 20/40. The glasses were super thick with bifocals so I never thought to mention the cataracts. The last test he did was without the glasses. At the end of the appointment he just said that I was legally blind and then he left the room. I never saw him again, never got an aviation medical of any type, and lost $200. It was very heart braking.

Is anything else included when it comes to operating a jet? Do you have to have a current licence?
@flywiththeguys
@flywiththeguys 5 лет назад
Yes. Jets operate in Class A airspace, or anything above 18K feet. In order to do so you have to have a instrument rating. Most Jet aircraft have two engines so a multi engine add on would also be needed. After that, you have to become certified for the type of Jet aircraft you're wanting to fly. That should be it. But, if you want to fly for hire, you would also need your commercial rating.
