My uncle was one of the handful of Union re-enactors to get picked for the Little Round Top segment. He always maintained that Jeff Daniels, despite his terrific performance, was a douche bag. It’s not that I didn’t believe my uncle but he’s a Vietnam vet and can get a little moody himself. But after seeing him in that clip telling Bucklin to “say the f~ing line…” Yeah, I think my uncle was probably on the mark. Jeff Daniels apparently had zero patience for the re-enactors who had small speaking roles and flubbed lines. I guess here’s the proof. But supposedly C Thomas Howell and the guy who plays Buster were cool guys.

On another video, it is explained by the director that he believed the most important scene in the movie was Colonel Chamberlain giving his speech to the 2nd Maine to try to convince them to join with the 20th Maine. Only a limited number of takes was available before they would lose the light. Jeff Daniels did well, but did not quite nail it. The director felt, I think correctly, that that speech needed to be perfect. With great difficulty, the director and actors just managed to get permission to try filming it one more time the next late afternoon, when the light was perfect again, and Daniels nailed it. I don't know, but it's possible that when Daniels lost his temper and cussed out a non actor, but a Civil War re-enactor (with I would guess some amateur acting experience), for missing his lines, it may have been the same day he was going to get his last chance to say the most important lines in the movie. If too much time was being used on this scene with the leader of the 2nd Maine, that could be real frustrating. As it was, I thought the re-enactor did a great job, despite needing multiple takes. It never occurred to me that he might not be a professional actor. In addition, Jeff Daniels, a method actor, had deprived himself of some food and enough sleep and had exercised hard so he could be just like the real Colonel at Gettysburg. I think people should give Jeff Daniels a break for losing his temper.
@addressinggettysburg
@addressinggettysburg 7 месяцев назад
One might argue that a professional who is knowingly working with an amateur should take an easier tact with said amateur. But, you’re right, professionals are humans too and when they deprive themselves of essentials, professionalism be damned.

You can hardly tell, but that last take of Ted Turner going down, I’m pretty sure that’s me stepping over him before the camera cuts away. I distinctly remember stepping over him, and that’s the only take that the person doing that looks remotely like me and how I was dressed. Just before that take he turned around and asked does anyone have some water? I tried to pull my canteen out, but in the haste of getting back to set between the break, it was underneath my haversack. So he got on one knee and took a drink. He said thanks, then the moment he stood up, two crewman had trays of watered down Gatorade in cups waiting for him. The other extras joked and said, do you know who those lips have kissed? I said no, not realizing he was Ted Turner and that the lady in the purple tank top giving us hugs between takes, was his wife Jane Fonda. I was only 17.

This Movie was so great. It seems Jeff Daniels is a real ass. I wish the end of this was true. I believe that the country would have came back together at some point.

Jack Daniels is the cause of many a problem in this world. Jeff Daniels has a bit of a reputation as a sour puss. And I respectfully disagree that we would have come back at some point. Had the south won the would have made the North American continent look like the South American continent: a bunch of un-unified countries. Successful secession by the south would have told every state therein and in the United States that if things don’t go the way they want, all they have to do is seceded. So even the confederacy would have broken up.

@@addressinggettysburg I completely destroyed that with the microphone. Thank you for responding. I just feel that the South American peoples have a much different, and diverse culture. Even though we as Americans do have a diverse culture we are still all Americans. The countries of South America revolted against Spain and immediately sectioned off their areas once they gained independence. The South wanted the country to be as it were when the country was founded. So I believe after a time especially with the fact that slavery was dying of natural causes anyway. South could never dream to compete with the industrial North. So I do not believe that every American would have talked and walked the same, but I do believe that they would have came together maybe even by the turn of the century.

@@bradjohnson1578The south was doing everything in its power to keep slavery alive; that’s why they seceded. They needed the extra voting power from new slave states being admitted into the Union, and the election of Lincoln jeopardized that project because he was against its expansion into the territories. Even if an independent South did eventually abolish slavery, it would have just transitioned into an apartheid state that would have made Jim Crow look tame. And without a federal government to rein them in, that apartheid might have even lasted longer than that of South Africa.

If the country split up would the USA been powerful enough to defeat Germany and the Central Powers in WWI and (assuming a German victory prevents Hitler) defeat Japan in WWII?
