Ranger John Hoptak, Gettysburg National Military Park
Ranger and historian John Hoptak will profile the life and military record of Major General George Sykes, commander of the Fifth Army Corps at Gettysburg. Being a quiet, fly under the radar type guy myself Ive always like Sykes. It never sat well with me that he isnt recognized at Gettysburg... Matt, this is the first lecture Ive watched this year and need to say that it is the absolute best quality Ive seen, ever! Angle is good, the slide presentation is visible and the fact you edited them in is marvelous! Congrats on job well done! The park needs to keep and hopefully make it worth your while to continue! Hear that Chris?!

As a longtime ACW geek, channels such as this one are very much appreciated. And the enjoyment of these videos is not just for learning, but also the acknowledgement that there so many who share the same enthusiasm for the subject. Many thanks to this channel for all the great video/audio interviews with LBG's and authors. You're all doing good work.

I must say this was an amazing lecture! Not only for George Sykes, but for the U.S Army Regulars! I hope to hear more about Sykes and the U.S Regular Troops! The professional soldiers of the Army deserve to have their story told, Infantry, Cavalry, and Artillery!! The U.S Regulars are men to be proud of! God bless General Sykes!! And God Bless the Army Regulars!!!

Great presentation! I, like most I guess, really didn't know much of anything about George Sykes. As it turns out, there was quite a bit to learn regarding this man who devoted his life to serving the country.

Excellent presentation on a man who sought neither notoriety nor compensation for a job well done. BTW, back when I reenacted, my group was the 6th U.S, Co G. I read 'Sykes Regulars', a wonderful, albeit very expensive, book. Wish I could get my hands on it again.

It’s sad that the dead are remembered in Glory but those that lived and led them to glory are not remembered at all… He put them there because it was the right and necessary thing to do. He knew what needed to be done and because he accomplished that task without fuss and fanfare he isn’t remembered as doing anything of consequence. This is a case that should be rectified. He spent 40 years in the army at all levels. He gave his life for the army and should be remembered outside of West Point as having done so.

I agree. Maybe this lecture will start the ball rolling on him getting his propers after all this time. Hey, Cushing got his Medal of Honor from President Obama. Sometimes, it takes time for some things to happen.

Great presentation. One point, as a loyal Unionist from the Heart of Dixie I can attest that Delaware is not considered a Southern state down here
@addressinggettysburg
@addressinggettysburg 3 месяца назад
Lol I’m sure it’s not. I once called Virginia “the South” in front of a North Carolinian and just about sh*t his britches with scorn towards me for thinking Virginia was the South. What does a Jersey boy know? We think everything across the Delaware is the Wild West.

The Regulars always seem to be in the thickest fighting. I remember another division (maybe just a brigade?) holding the left at Chickamauga under King. They were pummeled and nearly surrounded when a neighboring unit retreated from the line.

Thanks for the talk! I always wondered about that guy. Seemed like he was the George Harrison of Corps commanders, but there's something badass about the Regulars. So even-keeled, all business. That's a very impressive neighborhood he lives in now!

I really think that Sykes is less remembered because the 5th corps fights at one of the least visited parts of Antietam battlefield... also at Gettysburg the 5th corps is slipt up such that it doesn't "own" an area of the battlefield. For some reason i don't think most visitors come away with a clear idea that Little Round Top was defended by a 5th Corp brigade. Being held in reserve so often through the great battles of the early war really does show the presitge Sykes command had with the army. Im sure the regulars were held in reserve in particular for tactical reasons. It also does seem that Sykes managed to get his forces effectively divided, on a timely manner and dispatched to the most critical areas of the union left.
