"They shall beat their swords into plowshares"
Best view in the park. But you'd better hurry. This was shot in mid-late April (it's now mid-May). In another couple weeks, once June is underway in earnest, every sunset in good weather at the Pennsylvania Monument will be spoiled by hordes of tourists and teens. You can count on it. By that point, i'd try any of the three other observation towers for sunset gazing: the Longstreet, Culp's Hill, or Oak Hill. Or Devil's Den. Those locales may have a good handful of folks in attendance as well, but it won't be anything like the Romper Room experience you'll get at the Pennsylvania Monument during midsummer. As for a beautiful SUNRISE, however, that's an altogether different thing. Almost everyone visiting Gettysburg will be sleeping right on through sunrise, be too hung over for it, or busy stuffing their faces with that good ol' free hotel breakfast.
By the way, the Nike statue (Greek goddess of victory) which stands atop the dome was made from melted-down canons. In my opinion - this monument, on its technical merits alone, is one of the most impressive monuments in our nation. Perhaps i'll do a descriptive video on it in the future. And it's in fantastic condition for being over a hundred years old now (completed in 1914). Thanks to the National Park Service staff at Gettysburg, throughout the years, for their work.
