This video has been determined "advertiser unfriendly," even after we requested a manual review, which one would have expected to over-ride the robots? So, an actual human being looked at the video and decided this bolt action video is not suitable for advertising.

When I was stationed in Germany as the CO of a unit in Bavaria, I met some German officers and they invited me and 3 of my Sailors to a shooting match. Simple contest: one shot from a Gewehr 98. Closest to the bull wins. I have to say I was VERY impressed with the recoil of the rifle. Quite a good kick. The winner of the contest? An elderly gentleman who had carried a Mauser in the WW2 Wehrmacht. He nailed that bull right down the middle. It was great fun!

The military doctrine was different, the germans kinda stuck to WW1 tactics and tought the heart of the squad was a rapid fire machine gun that can suppress an entire open field with riflemen to support it. When they finally came to their sense, they invented the motherfucking assault rifle.
@MrDragonPig
@MrDragonPig 7 лет назад
+Gianni Carrea They did use the LMG support tactic, but I think they actually invented the fast movement and named it 'Blitzkrieg'. One British soldier that served in WW2 said that in the beginning they still dug trenches but that didn't work due to the German's new tactics, and over they came...

Beautiful old piece. The Turkish K. Kale Mausers very closely resemble the G98, although it has a more traditional rear sight. I do think the Turkish Mausers tend to have much more beautiful wood, though. The Springfield 1903 might have been derived from the Mauser, but it's definitely a much smoother gun. It's much easier to open the action and there's less play when operating the bolt.

Don't fix it. It likely works just fine as-is and you will significantly decrease the value doing something as simple as refinishing the stock in the slightest.
@paulshayter1113
@paulshayter1113 8 лет назад
Take it to a competent gunsmith to have it checked to see if it's capable of being fired as is, you really don't want to change anything from it's original/ brought back condition. Even something as simple as refinishing the stock could really lower it's value. Also see if you can find the "bring back" papers he would have been issued (unless he snuck it back home), those papers can be very valuable and possibly double the value of the gun.

Hi, Hickok45! I love your channel. This video gave me a flashback to about 30 years ago when I bought some old rifles at a garage sale. One was a Mauser 98, but when I got it home and had a chance to examine it in detail, I discovered that it had a rotary magazine. After a lot of research, which was not easy in those pre-Internet days, I discovered that it was manufactured with that design change for Greece.

@Betrix5060 8 лет назад
Easily the best bolt action rifle of it's age. Maybe even the best ever. Some will say the Lee Enfield is superior but they are dead wrong. The only advantage the Enfield has over the Mauser is a high rate of fire. Literally every other aspect is straight up inferior. More prone to jams, shorter effective range, lower accuracy; the list can go on. Nah, give me a Mauser any day of the week.
@hickok45
@hickok45 8 лет назад
The Lee Enfield is great, but once you empty the magazine, you still have to load five again TWICE in order to get the 10-round capacity. Generally, it's not going to actually allow twice as many rounds to be fired during the same time period, except maybe on the first magazine. Plus, that funky Lee Enfield clip is not as smooth to operate as the Mauser clips are.
@Gungeek

One thing I like about the Gewehr 98 over Kar98K is the sling mounts. They're at the bottom of the rifle, mean you can sling it on any side you like. Where as for the Kar98K, the sling is mount on the left side of the rifle. For me, that's matter, maybe because I'm a left-handed.

didnt they shorten the barrel because after ww1 they were limited as to the number of "rifles" they chould produce due to the treaty of versailles so they shortened the barrel and reclassified the rifle as a Carbine there for not making them subject to the number that chould be produced
@hickok45
@hickok45 8 лет назад
I believe that was one of the ways they got around it.
@RandomPoolGuy84
@RandomPoolGuy84 8 лет назад
Mauser also repeated a lot of their serial numbers to hide how many rifles they were producing.
@simonni4483
@simonni4483 8 лет назад
I believe the term "Karabiner" refers to the whether or not the rifle has a through hole in the stock for a sling, not because it has been shortened down.
@simonni4483
@simonni4483 8 лет назад
Germany had a surplus of Gew.98's following the first world war and because the Versailles treaty prohibited them from having over a certain number of long rifles they simply turned down their bolt handles, removed the rear "Lange Visier" type sights with a conventional tangent leaf sight and they cut a a hole in the stock for a side sling, making it an "Karabiner 98B". Also do note that karabiner can also refer to a spring loaded hook that mountaineers and such use.
@Exgrmbl
@Exgrmbl 8 лет назад
+Uriel Ventris That is correct, carbine in german refers to the sling arrangement, not the length of the gun.

These things were made with quality, last Christmas I got one of these. It’s a spandau 1916 with all matching numbers except for the entire bolt but even that is completely matching, someone just swapped the bolts. I fired it and it outperformed my grandfathers 1903A3 and that’s saying something. The only thing that makes me a little sad about this rifle is that the ammo isn’t free.

@AmericanHandgunner44
@AmericanHandgunner44 8 лет назад
+Stan Hilt It is hard to do it without the Supreme Court. If Hillary wins our election, she can flip our court to a very liberal anti gun court. That could ruin our court. But someone has to get a case to the Supreme Court to do anything. They can't make a decision randomly, they need a case on it.
@stanhilt1912

okay so the supreme court can amend the constitution without intervention of either the president or congress as long as they have a case to base their decision on? Seems to me like a strange mixing of powers?

The Diameter changed from .318 to .323. The .323 has alsways a "S" on the end, for example 8x57IRS, 8x60S, the .318 not (8x57IR, 8x60) I always wondered why american 8x57Is factory ammo is weak loaded. It's for safety reasons, there are many rifles (especially G88) out there, some were converted to the S diameter, some not. Hunting rifles also used the .318 a long time, still after the war and in almost all 8mm calibers. If you have an old german/european 8mm rifle you should check the diameter of the barrel, otherwise it could cause a dangerous overpressure.

im proud to say i own one of these mausers, i didnt realize i was sitting on such a jem though. I have fired it many times definitely the most accurate rifle i have ever used. the ammo is $$$ thats the only downfall as far as im concerned. since i inherited it i only know that its supposedly is a wwi era . definitely has the long barrel and looks incredibly old and tarnished i might be sitting on a original now im going to have to go check once i get off work.

The 98 rifle version is definitely better than the 98 K rifle for target shooters. I have shot this gun many times, but loading is always difficult. I suspect the clasp is bad.

A german veteran in ww2 would top up his rifle continuously with single rounds when in cover. 5 shot reloaders are for recruits.

Sorry hickok45, one litte correction ... ~9:55 That is not an imperial crown, it is the crown of Prussia. ;) It stands for the Königliche Preußische Gewehrfabrik [Royal Prussian Arms Factory] in Spandau (now a part of Berlin). Greetings from Germany. :)

The sights on these old rifles shows how pepole thought a war would be fought at the turn of the century. By firing at enemys at extremly long range. Human limitations sutch as soldiers having poor eyesight making it hard for them to even see that enemy at sutch distances were not even considered in this military theory. And like so many other theories it did not hold once WW I broke out.

I have an old 1891 Argentine Mauser sitting back home. Any chance you'd be doing a video on one of those? If I remember right, it was one of the first rifles to use smokeless powder.
