This channel supports the GH3 like no other channel that I've seen. The demonstrations and tips are so detailed that photographers will get to grips with their investment in a mirror less camera with great confidence. This an amazing channel and I will purchase the GH3. It makes sense to purchase this camera over a Canon 5D MKIII and Sony FS100 72 mbs on the GH3 awesome. The price is another big factor and ease of use. Your channel really supports the GH series cameras well.
Hi Karole, If you can move the video files to a computer you can see them in their entirety and see their run time. We have not found a way to view the stored video files on the GH3 by a run time list view. Good idea tho. We will pass it along.
Hi Corinne, Yes, you need to use the IMPORT window for GH3 footage shot in AVCHD. Connect the camera to your Mac using the USB cable that came with the camera, turn on the camera, if FCP does not auto launch the IMPORT window, go to FILE>IMPORT and bring them in that way. We are all moved up to FCPX here BTW. Its faster but very different.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I did a few tests and it seems to me that if you ARE in Manual (aka Creative) Video mode you may THEN use either the rear movie or shutter button and it will shoot manual. That is, both buttons function identically as long as you've moved the mode dial to Creative Video first. That doesn't contradict anything you've said here, I'm just saying it seems to give you that button back if you'd rather use it.
Hi Tony, Yessir, the GH3 is the best of the mirrorless cameras for the working hybrid pro. Others are also good, but the GH3 is a moneymaker. You may not know, but our Coach Will Crockett was one of the 3 photographers on Panasonics develoment team in the 6 months before this camera came out. Will still has a handmade GH3 serial X005. HANDMADE! How cool is that? - L
Hi Ali, Yes. you can record the HDMI stream out of the camera to whatever device you like. Will C has used a Samurai, and the Black Magic HDMI input cards on a mac to a streaming software utility to record the full 1080 stream form a GH2 and a GH3. Now, he's only using a SmallHD monitor on the HDMI port to check color and focus on critical GH3 shoots. As far as histograms, Will's not a strong user of Histos. Instead, he like the output to a high end monitor and judge for himself.
Thanks for clarifying things. Would you please make similarly short clarifying videos on using the Quick Menu and the C1/2/3 programming modes? These solo efforts should be easier to clearer and easier to digest, I believe.
Hey Guru, We agree, the kit zoom lens for G series cameras is nothing we ever use. For $500 or less you can choose from the wonderful 20mm f1.7, or move up to the 14-45mm {it's good}, I would stay away from the 45-200, but add another $100 and choose the 14-140HD lens? It's heavy but really good. You want the 12-35mm f2.6 tho. Start saving for that? : ) WC
Hello - a slightly unrelated question: have you found a good workflow to ingest/ edit GH3 footage? I am having a very frustrating time with good old FCP7. I can't figure out a way to put any effects without massive digital breakup on export (this for ALL-INTRA settings) interested to hear if anyone has found a solution
Mark, Will the manual video settings you show on this video work with a lagacy lens which requires an adapter? The adapter I use has no electronic connections? I've been using a Super Takumar 55mm in *still mode* and the manual aperature has an affect. The aperature and shutter speed changes I make to the camera body also have an affect on the stil pictures. BUT - I've been trying to get the camera to change aperature and shutter speeds while in manual photo mode as you show here while using the same legacy lens. I get no results so I'm wondering if there's a setting I missed? Thank you,
Mark I have been trying so many focus setting but I cannot get my video to stay in focus as I pan. It always goes to a blur and then refocuses. Constantly refocusing. Even if I'm not panning it will do this if the object (ie a bird) moves a slight bit. I've tried different lenses and it still happens. At this point, I don't even care for anything creative I just want a steady focus. My old camcorder had no problems doing this. What am I doing wrong? Thanks for any help.
Hi!! nicely explained!! i have bought GH3 last week ( 28 aug 2013) it comes with very basic kit lens G Vario 12-42mm 3.5 - 5.6. i never happy with this quality of pic and video.:-( pls let me know.. what is the best lens with in budget of 500$ which give stunning image and video quality !! thanks mate
Please do, when you can. My test consisted of dialing in "bad" exposure and then hitting the back button -- it recorded the underexposed scene faithfully. I also thought of a reason you'd want to use that button... Say you've locked focus using a half-press on the shutter release, because you locked exposure on something independently using the AE lock button. After recomposing, you don't want to hit the shutter release as it will reset focus. Use the back button instead and you're good.
Is the GH3 EVF good enough that you can do without a Zacuto Z-finder? I want to get this camera for its size for an extreme run & gun trip, biking in the desert in glaring sun, and if I can forego the use of a Z-Finder by capturing video from the viewfinder directly it would be perfect for me. Can you tell me about the functionality of the EVF and if the histogram is visible through the viewfinder to set exposure? (for video)
Hi Mark, I've watched several of your videos. Thanks for taking the time to post them and thanks for answering all the questions which are proving so helpful. I've been using a canon HF R400 for several months, but got the GH3 because I wanted to have the option of different lenses and so I could get better results in low light conditions. I picked the GH3 because my several weeks of research told me that the GH3 was a vast improvement over the limitations of the big name DSLR cameras for video and I watched videos comparing dedicated prosumer camcorders with DSLRs while shooting movies in low light conditions. So, while I'm more comfortable with video, it's because I've been shooting with a **P&S** video camera. My HF R400 doesn't offer much in the way of fine control of its manual shooting option. I can set it for under and over exposure (aperature I assume) but there is no control for shutter speed. I think the most confusing thing for still photographers wanting to make the transition to shooting videos might be that the GH3 offers more manual settings to use to shoot video as compared to a P&S video camera and that DSLR users don't understand how to relate their still shooting experience to setting the camera for good results on the video mode. The GH3 is my first DSLR. so, I'm not sure how to word my question. Maybe you'll understand what I intend to ask. I sort of understand the basics about shutter speed, ISO and aperature. But to give me a better basic understanding of how to set the camera up for shooting video does using the different frame rate settings and modes such as AVCHD, MOV and MP4 at their respective frame rates compare directly with using different settings used for stills? If that's the case how do they parallel? ((I'm remembering your video with Carol when you suggested using the slower 30P frame rate in a low light environment (as compared to shooting 60P) so the shutter speed could be set to allow more light on the sensor.)) Maybe answering that same question in reverse would be a good subject for a video and could give DSLR people some pointers on setting their cameras for video. Thanks again.
i'm confused, a guy on this channel (i don't know his name) said that mirrorless cameras offer the possibility to switch seamlessly between taking photos and recording videos, but if i wanna do that i have to turn the dial, so what's the difference between a mirrorless and a 5DIII, i don't wanna shoot auto video, but if i'm recording video and i wanna take a picture i have to turn the dial
hi there, i need some help please. i have a gh3 too and i want to set the setting to can see on the right bottom corner the recording time as i saw on your video, please tell me how i can do that. thank you very much and apologise for my english skill.
Can you use auto and over ride it with manual? Can you lock down the auto to stay on target? So say your following a subject and other subjects enter the frame will it stay on you subject with refocusing to a spot you don't want? Thanks
I'm trying to be open minded re "mirrorless". Your buddy Crocket keeps pounding the idea: We should give up our full frame pro dslrs because:'"you can go from stills to video by just pushing the other button." Almost had me there ; I primarily shoot stills in manual. (Now you say if I'm in "p-a-s-m",the camera (gh-3) shoots"auto video") how is my video going to match my stills if it jumps into "intel-auto" ( i.e. "i-d-i-o-t") mode?????????'
it's a shame you can't use manual video mode in more places, would be nice in at least C1 and C2.. so you could use C1 for overcranking, C2 for undercranking and so on. wellwell, no camera can be perfect but this is as close as you get for that money.
That is real cool, a hand made GH3. I'm going to purchase both the GH2 & 3. I like the multi aspect ratio sensor on the GH2 and the GH2 suffers less Moiré than the GH3. There is also a crop factor on the GH3 which is smaller than the GH2 but I do like the improvements in the GH3. The GH3 is faster
It looks like when he points to the indicator, it is an A and not an M as in AUTO mode. It shows an M later, but when he says "you can tell" and points at it, it is showing an A. ???
Hi Tony, The moire issue is real, but it only rarely happens. It's only the goof on the photo forums that think it's a problem. The 7 pros here that shoot with it everyday don't seem t have an issue with it buddy. Stay out of DPreview and photo doht net buddy - instead - go shoot pictures? You're a cool guy. - L
+learnhybrid.pro Is there a setting on the Lumix GH3 for more control of the mics? For example, in a vid by Andyax called "Equipment to improve your sound [Rode Videomic Pro + smartLav+]" at around 03:49 he shows changing audio recording settings to manual mode. He's apparently using a Cannon 5D Mark II. I can't find this setting option in the GH3.
AF is a privilege, not a right. : ) You need to set your AF modes carefully to allow them to "expect" the scene changes. Gotta dig into the manual to learn how they all work togerther. Also, some shots are not a good fit for AF and manual is a beter choice? - L
Hi Tony, I don't think there are any new GH2's around buddy. Also, the "multi aspect" issue on the web is more baloney from morons. The GH3 has just about the same multi aspect sensor function, it just does it a different way to maximize the iResolution feature. The mopes on DPreview are not smart enough to understand that. LOL!! Will is selling off all his GH2's and going to GH3. Would you like to buy one of his? They are in excellent shape. Post to Will in the ASK WILL at discovermirror
