A quick guide to the GH5 Color Profile Settings. The Lumix GH5 has some great picture profiles like Cine-D, V-LOG L and Natural Color Profile. I know there's a bunch of different GH5 color profile settings out there, but these picture profile settings and IRE levels in this video have been working pretty well for me. But as always, play around with the different color profile settings to get the look that is best for you.

When I first bought the GH5 three years ago, I used Cine D until I bought the Vlog L upgrade a few months later. I then did an extensive test in outdoor daylight conditions and under indoor studio lighting conditions with all the profiles, my conclusion was that Natural easily gave me the look I preferred the best if for some reason I was not going to use V log L such as extreme low light shooting or if I was not going to grade because of time restrictions or going out live! My go to profile is Vlog L every day of the week!🙏🏾

80% of the time i shot natural the best in my opinion especially in the dark situation the black stay black without noise..

Am I the only one in this world who think, that the CineV is the best low light profile.... I've tested it in different iso in very dark conditions next to every other profile and the CineV looks like best in terms of colors straight out of the camera and least noise

@@bulltivation7846 hi. If it is okay for you keep that cinelikev for lowlight but i swear try exact same shots on natural and see.. it is a personnal taste but lot of people think that the best low light profil is natural..

just changed from using Sonys for 7 years to a gh5 ( the gh6 dropped the price of the gh5 by £350 :) ) .. I shoot surfing so the 2x crop is a god send for getting the reach I need ..I have binge watched a lot of your videos to get on top of settings / set up and picture profiles ...thank you so much for your content it has saved me so much frustration learning a new camera and interface .... keep pushing the videos you explain things so well 🎉

Man thank you so much for all the info that you bring about this camera! I'm gonna be honest I always wanted to get into filmmaking and shoot B roll and I've been watching your videos for the last month and felt really inspired to go for it so I bought my first camera GH5! and I'm so happy with it! I did my first b roll video last week, its not perfect but I was really encouraged by it, but most important I really enjoyed it! I got the GH5 with V-log installed, but I daren’t risk using it when the natural profile works just fine for me. It just feels like one more variable to potentially get wrong.

I was big on CINED for a while but at the end of the day it did not seem worth it. Using now pretty much the Natural. I am going to try tomorrow the -2, -5, 0, 01, 0. Looking forward.

I primarily use the Natural Profile myself, but I have the GH5s and it came with the Vlog, but I havent really messed with it or Cine-D much. I really should learn more about it. Thanks for this helpful video...I look forward to trying out your LUTS.

Natural straight up. No color grade necessary. Are you using a viltrox adapter? Mine adds green tint. Especially compared with my metabones.

no i don't think you have to have v-log. you'd be fine with natural or cine-d

I'm not an expert regarding this subject, but is there a reason you don't turn the contrast all the way down when adjusting the natural profile? Wouldn't that give you more dynamic range? It still won't be as flat as V-log of course, which I understand can be a little too flat.

if things are well lit you should be fine but i wouldn't use v-log if light is a struggle

Hi Caleb, good video! I shoot on G9 which is kinda similar to GH5 after the last year firmware update. Been playing a lot with profiles, mostly Vlog, but lately switched to natural and cine d for shoots that don´t need too much color grading. I´m gonna try the hue settings you mentioned, maybe it fix the magenta tint on skintones I´m getting everywhere :D

I love the natural profile and going to give your specs a try today. I was shooting in vlog all week, first time trying to grade, and really like how you can manipulate the scene's mood, but man that's just another added step to the editing process...whew! I don't even shoot in manual mode (yet) as it's hard enough for me to just keep up with the story I'm trying to tell!

What’s the difference between filming in 60fps versus filming in 24fps and using the variable frame rate option on the GH5? Is one way better than the other in terms of a more cinematic look? great questions! I actually have a vid coming out this week talking about VFR. It's such a great feature. One main difference is the audio. no audio with variable frame rate. no auto focus as well. having that processed slo mo is great tho!

Hey Caleb, I experience these colour breakdowns on v-log as well, it's some weird blue colour islands on my dogs fur for example; do you experience these kind of breakdowns as well on the other profiles when shooting 8 bit?

Hey Caleb, great vid man. I have a question about skin tones exposure with VLOG and Zebra's. I see filmmakers speak about setting Z's at 55% with VLOG, as well as exposing one stopover. However, when I set Z's at 55% and then expose 1 stop over - the skins are blown out. What are your thoughts on this?

Do you ever shoot with HLG? I've been a natural shooter for a long time, but recently started HLG because I heard it handled noise in the shadows better than VLOG and I love the added dynamic range.

@@CalebHoover I've really liked using it recently (I use the Leeming LUT for converting it from HLG to rec709) and it feels like shooting in Natural but with just an added stop of DR. that said, I'm not super comfortable grading VLOG either, so I'm not the best to judge the profiles.

Hi, great video, thanks. I use normally Ryan Harris’ Cinelike D settings (with Zebra 1 at 100%), good for low lights situations and when I shoot 8-bit (for example with VFR). When I shoot 10-Bit I use Vlog. It could work for you?

my man, i bought a gh5 and a used sigma 18 35 for 400€. im so excited i watched all your videos and i fear that i made a mistake because of the manual focus or maybe the weight of this lense... could you maybe do a manual focus gh5 settings video? or how you manual focus in general especially with the sigma. ill probably copy your handheld rig aswell :D i watched almost all of your videos man but the more i get into it the more im confused which lense to buy or whatever. anohter question: in your rig video u have the lense adapter, is it also usable if i use it with the viltrox adapter? love you man

thanks for watching! yeah the viltrox works great. i personally use the metabones but the viltrox, from what i've heard and i have a couple friends that use it, works just as well as the metabones. i think a manual focus vid is a great idea!

Caleb, why do you use in-camera contrast at "-2" in natural? it seems to me that, by lowering contrast, when filming for example in full daylight, nd can be rotated less, and so the shadows get better exposed, whereas if contrast is high, nd must be rotated more, so shadows are less exposed (or was it the other way around). but, if that is how it is, then what sense does it make to not turn contrast all the way down to "-5"? i mean, if you do it for better room in grading, then i dont see the logic in going with only "-2" vs the full "-5". and if it is not true (it's not better in grading), then why not keep it at zero, as it originally is? i mean, why did you pick the intermediary solution? and, if you did it because sometimes you dont grade and it's easier to have it straight out of camera with a contrast that looks good to you, then still, could you tell what your thoughts are on this incamera contrast (if, for better grading, it is or is not better to use "-5")?

Question, I am using zebras and the waveform to help balance my exposure and that’s helping, but now once that’s done, my question is what do I prioritize to lighten my exposure - aperture, shutterspeed or iso? Like should I keep aperture at a minimum (2.8 on my lens) and then use shutter speed and/or iso to adjust the exposure? Which one should I keep low and which should I be adjusting to move the waveform ? I obviously want to stay away from noise as much as possible, Someone please help I am dying trying to figure this out and I can’t!!!!

Whenever I shoot with Natural profile the result looks like it slightly has magenta tint on it which is not a case for Cine D or V-log. Do you have any idea why it happens?

Hey Caleb, great video! I'm leaning toward the Natural profile now. Question: I have limited monitor and computer resources...can I get away with color correction/grading with proxies? I'm seeing some comments online saying that you shouldn't....thoughts?

I think as long as your proxy has the same color depth as your original footage your fine. i can also recommend using Apple ProRes (or i think DNxHR on Windows) Codecs for proxy files because those or much less tasking for your computer then the files from the camera
