A deep-dive into the history, structure, and expression of Hindustani Classical Music schools of thought by Vocalist Vinayak Phatak.
Vinayak Phatak began learning Hindustani vocal music with his mother (Mrs. Manorama M. Phatak) in his childhood: her own training from the legendary Pt. Vinayakrao Patwardhan and Pt. D.V. Paluskar helped to instil in her son a love for Khayal, and gave him a deep and solid foundation in the style and repertoire of the Gwalior tradition.
He went on to learn from other great Gwalior legends such as Pt. Narayanrao Vyas and Pt. Gajananbua Joshi, and he added a profound knowledge of Jaipur repertoire and style from Pt. Joshi as well as from Pt. Ratnakar Pai.
He was awarded first prize in the Vocal Classical Music Competition at the Bombay University Youth Festival in 1971, and has been performing as a vocal artist at All India Radio, Bombay, since 1984.
From 1988 to 1991 he represented the Government of India in Jakarta, Indonesia, as a Vocal Music teacher and performer through the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) program to promote and propagate Indian music abroad.
In recognition to his talent and dedication to the Indian Classical Music, Canada Council for the Arts awarded scholarship to Vinayak Phatak in 2007 to conduct Research to explore Role of Bandish in the Indian Classical Music.
Vinayak Phatak continues to explore his passion in the Classical Music and looking forward to bring more appreciation of this art into the North American culture.
Since 1999, Vinayak Phatak has been active as a teacher and performer in the Greater Toronto Area.
Presented by Intonation in 2024.
