In this session, Dr. Eva Natanya builds upon her previous talk on wise motivation, also known as conative intelligence in modern psychology. Specifically, she focuses on the five faculties that are core to bodhisattva practice, from the very beginning of the path all the way until total enlightenment. Dr. Natanya also shares personal advice on how to build a balanced retreat practice, from an initial solo retreat of a few days, up to a retreat of several months in a conducive, quiet, natural environment. Such retreat experiences are what build the firm foundation for entering a truly long-term retreat to gain the groundbreaking stability of shamatha.
About Dr. Eva Natanya
Dr. Natanya has spent more than four years in solitary meditation retreat, and currently serves as resident teacher at Miyo Samten Ling Hermitage in Crestone, Colorado. She is an advanced scholar of Indian and Tibetan Buddhism, Christian theology, and comparative religion. She has worked with Dr. B. Alan Wallace on his translations for several books on Dzogchen, and has co-taught multiple retreats with him as well.
What is Ghatika Monthly?
Ghatika Monthly is an in-person and virtual gathering held on the 2nd Saturday of every month, in which CCR expert teachers offer accessible guidance in foundational yet transformative contemplative practices. Ghatika is the Sanskrit term for one 24-minute meditation session, which is the recommended length for beginning meditators. We offer these sessions freely to ensure that anyone can access contemplative techniques for cultivating a healthier, more balanced mind.

While most of the CCR's expert teachers come from a Buddhist background, these sessions are designed to be secular, informative, and welcoming to beginning and advanced practitioners alike. At Ghatika Monthly, we hope to offer a taste of the contemplative technology that our full-time contemplative scientists cultivate for 8-12 hours per day at Miyo Samten Ling Hermitage in Crestone, Colorado.

I feel very blessed to have found your talks and guided meditations Dr. Natanya. The bridge you drop from Buddhism to Christianity is much needed in this moment when so many people are of “dual belonging”. To have a scholar practitioner expound so brilliantly on both traditions opens the heart. Thank you.
