Bigtime Ghave player here- just wanted to say a couple things to add on to this video: Ghave puts all your combos in this deck on steroids- any infinite combo that involves Ashnod's Altar, and you've got Ghave on the field, WILL result in you having an infinite number of ∞/∞ saprolings. You sacrifice the initial infinite combo for mana, you use that infinite mana to begin sacrificing to Ghave's abilities, and you create an inifite number of saprolings and put an infinite number of +1/+1 counters on each of them. This combo is very resilient to removal, since at the start of the combo you can essentially combo off in response to removal on the stack. Secondly, I wouldn't use Poison-tip anymore in this deck. Cruel Celebrant got printed after this video, who does the same effect for half the mana, and can also gain you life along the way. Last, I personally like going for a LOT of ramp and a low mana curve when building Ghave. Ghave can always use extra mana that you have lying around, and there's always some value you can get by moving some counters and saprolings around on your board. Some cards I think are absolute necessities for any budget Ghave brew: 1 Gift of Immortality (good protection & value if it's on Ghave) 1 Butcher of Malakir 1 Cruel Celebrant 1 Corpse Knight 1 Good-Fortune Unicorn 1 Westvale Abbey (Ghave can turn into 5 creatures to easily get this out, afterward you can put counters on Ormendahl) 1 Mirror Entity (Allows for explosive kills out of nowhere) 1 Smothering Abomination (more card draw than you can shake a stick at) 1 Deathreap Ritual (sac saprolings on each player's turn to draw 4 extra cards every round Also I'll just throw a few cards I think would be decent for the deck: 1 Harrow 1 Wood Elves 1 Utopia Mycon 1 Sylvan Scrying (only if you get Westvale Abbey) 1 Crop Rotation (only if you get Westvale Abbey) 1 Nature's Claim 1 Harmonize 1 Primal Command 1 Prison Term
For cuts, Thallid Omnivore and Thallid Soothsayer are easy to throw out- I get the saproling theme, but they're both pretty bad and will eliminate value that you have on your board (board presence > life gain). And since you're running green, you don't really need Chromatic Lantern or the 3 signets if you run enough ramp spells. The artifacts may be faster, but getting lands out of your library will improve your card draw later in the game, since you'll be less likely to draw lands. Finally, you can cut down on some of the basic lands in favor of some decent, but cheap ones. Check out Saltcrusted Steppe, or the bounce lands!
I'm missing some of this stuff on my Ghave deck. I was using Parallel Lives, Slimefoot, and Ashnod's Altar to do infinite damage, but I need Geralf's Messenger.
Very good videos, you really helped me with the Tatyova vid. I couldnt get the right idea of what i needed to build, but your vid saved the deck lol. Keep it up!
I took a more reserved approach- only using ashnod's alter for infinite colorless mana or +1/+1. More of a midrange toolbox build that grinds till a critical mass moment. Wins as a side effect with slimefoot or corpse knight out while making infinite. I like winning with combat damage but have the combo if needed.
Ghave saprolings is literally my favorite deck, and you're not wrong XD its the literal key to this deck, im trying to find ways to make it indestructible or hexproof
I like the flexibility that Ghave possesses, best Abzan commander. I'd recommend Awakening Zone/From Beyond, Pitiless Plunderer, Orzhov Advokist, Seedborn Muse, Splendid Reclamation, Westvale Abbey. A new card Season of Growth can replace Viscera Seer. Ghave seems like they have only become stronger over time with the choices LOL. My secret tech: Tainted Strike 1cmc, a infectious strike from Ghave has closed out games fast:P
No Hardened Scales? No Vigor? No Forgotten Ancient? No Psychotrope Thallid or Utopia Mycon? You've got the "Aristocrats 3" of Blood Artist, Z. Cutthroat, and Poison Archer why not combine that with getting a phyrexian altar on a creature as well as a small skullclamp. Thoughts on Blade of the Bloodchief? Fungal Behemoth also fits +1 theme and fungus subtheme and is stronger for +1 counters present. I'm assuming Parallel Lives and Anointed Procession are too pricey for budget tech?
I’m building this deck now. It is a really well thought out deck list. Glad I found this channel. Anyone have any recommendations for newly printed cards that might be strictly better upgrades?
Thanks for watching! Renata from Theros Beyond Death is a great addition (and still budget). It's another combo card to give your creatures +1/+1 counters when they ETB! Tendershoot Dryad is also another great card (It wasn't budget when I made the deck, but now is under $4). Moldervine Reclamation was recently reprinted in Core 2020 and goes great in the deck (also budget). Definitely would add Faeburrow Elder from Throne of Eldraine as well. Such a fantastic ramp card. Altar of Dementia is now budget ($1.50) and wasn't at the time of recording. It's another great sacrifice outlet and a wincon built-in. Hope this helps!
Budget EDH thanks. Those are all great suggestions. I had moldervine in mind for sure. I had not heard of faeburrow elder but will consider it as a ramp addition. I like from modern horizons good fortune unicorn also.
@@christopherm.7310 If you're still building this deck, check out my comment I made on here for some additional cards to look at. I've been playing Ghave for like 5 years now, I've found some pretty good budget cards
Anointed procession is great! Unfortunately, it was out of budget, and decided to lean heavier on the combos. You can build this deck a lot of different ways!
Thanks for this video. I'll definitely use some ideas to upgrade my budget Ghave deck. Also, thanks for the Muldrotha giveaway, it would be awesome to win!
The Combo at 14:30 is only infinte mana not infinite tokens. You will have infinite sac effects though which will win with Blood artist. If you have Corpse Jack Menace, Champion will get infinitely big as well and win off her swinging in.
You just do the combo and make 1000 mana and put 1000 counters on champion and use 500 mana to take 500 counters off champion and it's as good as infinite lol
Once you have infinite mana you pull a +1 counter off champion with ghave’s effect which replaces the counter on champion, which you do initiative times to make infinite tokens. Then you can use ghave’s ability to sac infinite tokens and make each of your tokens infinite power and toughness. It 100% works zac Swift.
Amazing deck! I tried building a Ghave deck but it turned out too slow, will definitely try this version! Any card in particular out of budget that would be great in here? (Doubling season, phyrexian altar, etc) also I may have to add a bit of removal, some decks are just too fast :)
I have been running ghave since 2012. Doubling season lets you go infinite with so much. I also run deranged hermit/wurmcoil engine/hornet queen with ashnod’s altar and nim deathmantle for infinite mana and dudes. Phyrexian altar helps convert colorless mana into colored mana because what typically happens is you look to go off on one particular turn and you tap almost completely out because you are getting very precise with calculating mana. Sometimes you can go off, but you realize you have infinite dudes with infinite power/toughness but they don’t have haste so your opponents have a turn to deal with it and you can’t respond. The altar let’s you convert the mana into colored mana, which helps you by being able to cast a draw spell, or drop a fecundity to draw your deck and either play a haste spell (I run concordant crossroads) or an aristocrat effect to drain your opponent.
Wow another great deck tech! I learned a lot from this. The first thing is that the Ghave player needs to die ASAP because if not then you probably will be.
The combo with bloodspore Thrinax doesn’t make sense to me 13:01 Could someone explain to me how those Three specific cards actually make infinite tokens because from what I listened to its just infinite mana
Yeah, you would need two open mana (or a creature to sac to the ashnod's altar). Once you create infinite mana, you can stop sacing the creatures. You would use Ghave's ability to remove a +1/+1 counter to create a saproling. This would enter with a +1/+1 counter, and then you rinse and repeat for infinite tokens. You need the infinite mana first to be able to pay for 1 generic mana for Ghave's ability. Hope this helps!
There are quite a few fungus out there! You could make this a tribal build. They actually work out really well with Ghave due to the sacrifice outlets a lot of them bring.
This is a deck I am hoping to build I think I have most of the cards for that one. The gravetide deck I am really interested in and hope I win would be a fun deck to play with the group
Tutors. There’s a million in junk colors. Enlightened , demonic, vampiric, diabolical intent, worldly tutor, Eldrich evolution, green suns zenith, tooth and nail to name a few. Also recursion, like eternal witness and genesis helps a ton. If all else fails and your combo gets broken up you swarm with tokens especially with cathars crusade.
Deranged hermit/wurmcoil/hornet queen with nim deathmantle. Concordant crossroads. Altar of dementia/phyrexian altar. Urborg/cabal coffers. Gaea’s cradle/growing tired of itilmog. Tooth and nail. Hour of promise to grab coffers combo. Bitterblossom. Elspeth knight-errant (especially for the ultimate if you have doubling season out first). Mortician beetle. Blade of the bloodchief. Enlightened tutor. Aura shards. Just to name a few from my deck. Been running ghave since 2012 and I have probably over 200 edh games with it so it’s beyond tuned. He’s so incredibly broken.
the funniest part about all these infinite combos is that ghave is mr. "Oops I accidently infinite" So now you are purposely including infinite combos. I am gonna use these combos but i am gonna also include my token doublers.
