Thanks, this helped me when me wifey's GHD air smelt smoke and had a whining noise. followed ur disassembly and cleaned all the burnt dust and put it back, after a few seconds, it seems to be working fine. thank you once again!
The security fasteners are the five point star TX10 size. The six point star TX10 is more widely available but doesn't fit. Really helpful video. Managed to realign the motor in my daughter's dryer after she had dropped it and it had become much more noisy. It's now as it was when new.
@@KevsElectricalWorkshop Hi Kev I have three of these to look at all only need new cables. I have struggled to get them apart. The screw at the bottom of the handle only came undone on one with a T8, I too cant get a T10 to fit. Any idea where I can purchase both types as mentioned by Richard Lunnon? I am in the uk.
Good informative video. I fixed our dryer with the how-to information. A small part of the motor disassembly is out of screenshot but keep watching as you can pick up what was missed in the reassembly of the motor. Cheers.
Having a similar prob with my fair dryer with it making a strange noise and causing my hair to become very staticky and stick up as though I've had an electric shock
Thanks for the video! Super helpful. Do you show the fuse at some point in the video? I'm trying to repair my GHD Air that isn't heating, and have taken it apart buy can't see anything obviously wrong.
there is a auto resetable fuse and a non resetable fuse on one of the wings of the heater assembly, if one of these is open circuit your not going to get any heat
Thanks! i just watched to see if there are any snap hooks or something like that. My dryer actually had Penta-Security Screws and not Torx. It was a pain to open without the right bit.
Hi, thanks for great video, I have had to cut and re-solder the power cable, the motor is running fine but now I have no heat. Any ideas please? regards Dell
Hi Kev, one of the washers on the bottom shaft (long end) of the motor broke in half when I removed the motor. Do you perhaps know what kind of material the washer is made from and are the washers on the top shaft made from the same material?
Thank you for posting the video, but I was only able to hear his voice. Waiting for the video was very tiring, especially since the angle wasn't right.
Hi Kev, great video very helpful. I have a Ghd hair dryer that the cable blew a hole. After cutting that section out, it works fine again but, slow speed setting not working at all and it blows cold air. Thermal fuse and elements test ok. By applying a little pressure to the heat button it blows hot? Could this be an assembly issue or something else? Thanks
Kev, I wondered if you have any idea's on the following, I bought a display GHD hair dryer, opened it up and although the Motor/Element and the Switches are all there the internal wiring is missing and the mains lead (not a problem with that) do you know if I can get that as a kit. Or should I just sell the body and bits on E-Bay. Regards Jack
Hi Jack you cant buy any original parts as ghd has never supplied any, all parts (hair stylers also) are either from scrapped units or pattented parts, if you wanted to sell i would be interested or you could do the internal wiring yourself, if you send me a email (address in the about) i can send you a picture of the internal wiring, think its 4 wires from heaters to switch pcb and 2 wires from motor to switch pcb so major issue if you can use a soldering iron.
Hi Kev, me too have the same GHD air hairdryer all wires been cut . if you could help with a picture of the internal wiring. my Email is :《 chokrallah91@gmail 》
Hi, thank you for this strip down! My motor is missing the little spring and causing the motor to move back and forth, do you know if I can get a replacement? Or extra shims to push it to the right spot please?
Hi Kevin, I am having some problems trying to find the correct screwdriver to open up my hairdryer which is the same hairdryer used in your video. I am aware it's the TX10 screwdriver with a 5 pin head but I was sent the TS10....please can you send me a link of the correct screwdriver to buy like the one you used...thanks
the GHD air can have either a 5 star or 6 star torx, one is imposible to get, the one i use is www.amazon.co.uk/neilsen-CT1209-Security-Tamperproof-Bits/dp/B004EI1YZ4/ref=sr_1_13?keywords=security+bit+set&qid=1553467932&s=gateway&sr=8-13 but it will only do 50% of the ghd air but good set for the pennies
the camera is a bit off but the tutorial was good. It would be nice to see how to change brushes. I think the most common issue is to replace brushes or something that has to do with the heating resistance.
Hi Kev, I've got a Ghd air dryer that makes a noise and is clearly going slower than it should. It also is only working on the fastest of the two speeds. 20 odd years ago I use to repair power tools for a living and I'd take a guess it's the field as the armature looks fine as does the commutator. Any ideas? Thanks in advance Laurence
Hi Kev, I have the same hair dryer but the problem is it's not giving any hot air at all... do you have any idea what could be the problem ? thankyou !
So my friend stayed over and left her curling tongs near my ghd air hairdryer and burnt through the cable. Is this something that can be replaced easily as it’s quite new and limited edition :(
I tried twisting the cap off the back air filter 30 degrees like you did in the video and it did not budge at all. Almost as if it was glued on or something. I’m so frustrated I can’t even clean the back air filter.
Hi sorry for the delay been a tad busy, have been told there are some that dont come off but never seen one, if there is a metal ghd mesh then it should twist anti clockwise a bit to remove the mesh.
I have not found a source, it is a jonson motor and can be found on there website but never found a local supplier, supprised the bearings worn normaly the comm goes first
@@KevsElectricalWorkshop I got one too with a worn top bearing. I'll notify if I find a source of these. You refer to Johnson motor , is part of Johnson Controls, a US based but global company? Regards, Tom.
@@tomboll5206 www.johnsonelectric.com/en/features/salon-power-motors-for-professional-hair-dryers if the bearing dosnt have play but squeeks soak it in light machine oil of a few days then clean oil off and reuse, wifes has been going for 6 months not a squeak.
its not something i can tell you as i have never even seen a philips hp8100/46, you would need to dismantal and work out how the heat switch is wired and possibly just disconnect a wire to achieve a cold setting.
Hey kev my ghd blowdryer works ok but i cant seem to remove the lint screen no matter what i try it wont come off. Is this because it is a model sold in the united states of america vs the british version? Also have you had any inquires about this problem im having as far as removing thw lint screen?
@@KevsElectricalWorkshop ---Hello Kev. This video is superb thanks. Please help...just like jimmy moser and nancy jerzak....I absolutely CANNOT twist off the lint screen cap. I've gently tapped it to loosen...no results; I've sprayed it slightly with some WD-40 lubricant oil --it WILL NOT MOVE. Can you help us please by looking into this problem? pleeeeeeessssse??????
@@KevsElectricalWorkshop I'm searching desperately for a fan for my GHD Air 1.0 too! No luck. And scrap units are still expensive. Any chance you have another fan, mine broke a few blades off?
the only thing that was without a doubt faulty was the yellow capacitor as pointed out in the video, i didnt look to see how it was connected but is most possibly used for supressing motor brush arcing, will look on my spare board for you.
@@KevsElectricalWorkshopHow do you determine is the dryers are fake? It seems all the straighteners have a flat cord instead of rounded, but the GHD air hair dryer I have has a rounded cord.
is the rotor free is turned by hand if not dismantle and clean (dont lubricate as the bearings are self lubricating and extra oil ect will clog it up, just clean). If it is free then the field winding is possibly gone.
Does it spin free, remove the oil else brearing will turn it to sticky mess in no time, caps are proberly only used to reduce brush arc but without seeing i cant say if they would affect. is full voltage getting to motor? does it growl if so a coil on armature has gone.
KEVIN...KEVIN...KEVIN....The filter cap DOES NOT....ABSOLUTELY does not come off all ghd models. Please update your video information because this is the official information ON THE ghd WEBSITE about the filter cap...AND THE FACT is that the FILTER CAP DOES NOT COME OFF all models (I'm in USA Silicon Valley).....so, what model dryer has a removable cap that you are working on. ???? Here it is...from ghd web site: HAIRDRYER HOW DO I REMOVE THE AIR FILTER ON THE BACK OF MY ghd AIR™ HAIRDRYER? The rear filter on your ghd air™ hairdryer cannot be removed. However, it is important that this area is kept clean, to ensure that your hairdryer operates at the optimum efficiency. In order to do this, unplug the hairdryer from the main power supply then take a soft brush and gently remove any dust or hair present on the filter. Please do not use a steam cleaner or immerse the appliance in water. You should also refrain from using sharp or abrasive detergents or corrosive products, during the cleaning process. KEVIN.... the FILTER CAP DOES NOT REMOVE ON ALL MODELS
For those in the US, the filter is NOT removable. Here's ghd's North America Support's statement and filter cleaning instructions: Due to UL government standards in the United States, we were unable to manufacture the AIR dryer with a removable filter. The ghd AIR dryer does not have a removable filter. To clean your ghd AIR filter take a soft toothbrush and gently remove any dust or hair present in the filter.
They use Phosphor bronze bushes that should outlast the motor comm, clean but dont lubricate is all you should need to do. like most ghd parts they can only be obtained from other ghd units
