Pokemon Competitive Singles in Gen 9 is centred around everyones favourite Cheese Stringer, Gholdengo, with its immunity to absolutely all status moves. Jim is here to argue that this Powerful new Financial Business Analyst Pokemon, who is made of pure Solid Gold, is actually one of the more well designed Top threats in the Gen 9 singles ecosystem.
Iron Mugulis, or perhaps even Iron Fellow, may have orchestrated all of this from behind the scenes. Or is any of this even real? Nobody truly knows.

Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RU-vid. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

If Gholdengo were faster or bulkier, then it would be absolutely disgusting. But the ability to easily outspeed it fairly easily and splatter it with strong SE moves, or wall it with a steel resistant Pokemon due to Shadow Ball's lower base power, helps keep Cheesy Boi in check.

Gholdengo is a threat you have to keep in mind when building your team but if you don't have the perfect counter for it it won't automatically lose you the game, just make things harder. Its checks and counters are useful beyond just fighting Gholdengo and you also aren't forced to use it yourself. In a way Gholdengo's existence can help with team building. We all know the choice paralysis of an empty canvas; most people need a starting point to start building something and Gholdengo can be this starting point without being too suffucating when it comes to answers. It is not all that fast and weak to ground, fire, dark and ghost - there are so many good things you can use to make use of that. And preparing for Gholdengo will likely not be in vain because it is used so often.

Gholdengo and Great Tusk really feel like the Tyranitar and Landorus of old. Both tier rulers with amazing options. But not too centralizing and hard to deal with like other gen 9 Pokémon. Which I think is great to keep the meta alive while not making it so that all the same Pokémon are on the top from previous gens

Gholdengo is one of the best Pokémon designed mechanically. It truly feels like a worthy reward for collecting all those Gimmighoul Coins. I just wish it could learn SURF, considering it rides coins like a surfboard.

Gholdengo is actually the sole reason that amoongus uses stomping tantrum, as it allows you to freely use spore and then follow up with a 140 bp ground move (so long as the gholdengo doesnt have balloon)

Gholdengo's competitive design is golden. It has a discount magic guard with more weaknesses and brings back the old ghost type niche of spin-blocking with an added defog immunity to keep your hazards up. It hits hard and has good coverage. The good bulk (but not ridiculous) is boosted by one of the best typings. Its exploitable speed of base 84 is very strong for a pokemon of this typing, but very manageable in a vacuum. It's not causing team repetition or forcing a small selection of pokes to be used in response to it. Like many bulky ghosts (many of which are slower than ghold), they have good traits, but switching in recklessly can result in an instant team deficit.

I've found Magnezone to be really useful for countering Corviknight and Kingambit with the combination of Thunderbolt and Tera Blast Fighting. It can even OHKO Iron Treads if its only invested in HP. Its not overwhelming, but it does have a pretty solid niche.

An important nuance/correction I'd like to add to this : You said Gholdengo isn't overpowered partly because it matches up poorly agaisnt the best hazard removal/most used Pokémon Great Tusk. This isn't some stroke of luck tho, Great Tusk is the best hazard removal/most used Pokémon SPECIFICALLY because it has a positive matchup against Gholdengo. This might seem like nitpicking, but that does make a difference. It's not ''Gholdengo is strong, but is countered by the #1 used Pokémon, therefore it's not overpowered'', it's actually ''Gholdengo is such a strong and centralizing Pokémon, almost every team needs a way to deal with it, making Great Tusk the #1 used Pokémon in the meta''

initially i found gholdengo very annoying since it required a whole new method of thinking when playing and felt broken, but now that we have clear answers to it and know its sets its always a fun pokemon to have in a game. i've had a lot of success with a leftovers max Sp.Def 252def garchomp for spikes/rocks, air balloon modest 252 speed gholdengo to switch into and one shot great tusk, and my own assault vest tusk to keep hazards off especially against cinderace. when you use that core correctly you can get a very big advantage right away and keep it for the whole game, and when you have 3 immediately threatening offensive pokemon in the back it enables them to both eliminate any defensive checks and then clean up once they do

Hazards became too powerful, even with rapid spin, so defog was buffed. But the counterplay to defog was very limited. Taunt would be the best option. I've had a less orthodox method of defog blocking in suicide moves. Defog needs a target in order to block hazards. So explosion, healing wish, memento or final gambit can block it in a pinch. Seeing Gholdengo as a new strong option to protect your hazards is something I welcome (although I don't use Gholdengo.)

On early SV used to see Gholdengo as broken, with all the insane amount of hazard setters (both new and old), almost every Ground type getting Spikes. But as the meta progressed, Great Tusk being the #1 pokemon and also best hazard remover, and the huge influence of Dark types (The Ruin mons, Kingambit and Meowscarada), and Corv still being good I realised Gholdengo was actually healthy and fine on the meta. Also last gen Corv had an insanely easy time removing hazards with 0 drowbacks, and beating SR setters 1v1 with Pressure, if Gholdengo wasnt around Spikes would prob be a niche playstile, Kingambit would might rather to use Defiant isntead of Supreme Overlord to deterent Corv's Defog, and we would see those boring Corv vs Corv 1v1 trying to PP Stall each other that was common last gen.

Clear Body would actually be pretty good, it has boosting moves and would appreciate nothing being able to take that away. At some point Calm Mind will enter the moveset. If that happened and Gholdengo had Clear Body, forget it, you're not taking it out with Special moves.

I used to hate fighting Ghouldengo the same way i hate fighting the likes of Espathra (especially), Chien-Pao/Chi-Yu, Toxapex, Tapu Lele, Regieleki, Spectrier, Zacian, Rillaboom (in Gen 8 VGC), Lando-T to an lesser extent, and some others but after watching this video i kinda can't help but respect it now, like i do with Great Tusk who i also find fun to use

Gholdengo is the continuation of a cycle started in gen 4. Stealth rocks were very centralizing and to keep them you had to use rapid spin, which could be blocked by gengar/Rotom forms/Giratina (Ubers). The only way to prevent the spinblocking was to threaten the ghost pokemon or catching the rotom forms on the switch with foresight of all things. Gen 5 literally Unbanned excadrill not because it wasnt broken anymore, but rather it provided a method to spin past rotom wash. The cost was to ban sand rush completly, which was fine without exca in the tier. Then gen 6 came with buffed defog and gen 7 made defog almost universal. Suicide rock setters fell out except on HO teams and bulky rock setters like chansey started a pp war to defeat bulky deffogers. Gen 8 made offensive teams stronger with boots and spin was buffed. Now they released Gholdengo, which is basically what a gen 4/5 ghost type used to be, but with a added immunity to phasing moves, leech seed, etc. Bulky rock setters/deffogers also got nerfed with the "stall nerf". My prediction is that they will probably buff hazzard stacking a bit more and then they will finally release the aerilate spinner we always needed, maybe in gen 10.

You know the crazy thing? People thought it was BROKEN, and i thought so too. It wasnt untill it was pointed out that Great Tusk could check it that i noticed its not that bad. Its not super fast, its not bulky, it really is carried by its SpAt, ability and typing. Its something youll always have to account for, and once Home and DLC release itll likely fade away because of all the things that can now check it like Hisuian Samurott and Ursaluna. If it falls into UU somehow, it might get banned there as long as theres no Ghost, Dark, Ground or Steel types around (which there always will be, Sandy Shocks is used a lot in UU and who knows, maybe Slither Wing could rise up to check it at some point or Iron Treads following in its past forms steps to stop it)

People think it’s still broken and want it gone cuz it’s gunna fix the hazard issues No it’s not we will literally be having the same hazard removers and yea Corviknight wouldn’t be that good even with its removal
