I bought this movie on VHS at WalMart in 2001. Had no idea it would be so good and I would still be talking about it and thinking about it all these years later. A classic.
I Bought The Ghost Dog's DVD Version in 2009 after watched and loved the film on Space TV Channel in 2007. I was looking for this movie over 2 years until I found it in Blockbuster the Ex-Rent Version in perfect conditions, so I bought the DVD No doub it.
Gun fu is beautiful in all its forms For a while I had added this to my list of films that has scenes like jhon wick and equilibrium Its nice to know Thank you for this!
@@PARAMOUNTPHLOPYNATOR I’m sorry but your comparing the way this Neanderthal handles his guns to likes of John wick and equilibrium??? That’s just disrespectful
it's corn rows why does everyone on youtube say things a little differently than normal. and they never add the extra "o" onto too. Every post on twiiter also has these spelling erorrs
@@mclovin9151 I give people the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to the auto fill that sometimes changes their wording, however proof reading is a thing and only takes a second.
"Hagakure" wasn't written to teach samurais to fight. many believe, since it was written during an era in which they weren't really needed, the book was written to remind them of how to remain prepared to fight. that's also why the book goes into the "spirit of an age" and how we can't return to it - the samurai had to accept that the world had changed and they couldn't go back to the old ways... which lead to the book being compiled from a series of discussions.
pmulbrecht that’s why he also read Rashomon , not sure if he read the book of five rings , well seeing that he does the Chow yun fat 2 shot , maybe he did
I can't believe this mafia crew is so incompetent.they should have known right when he pulled up it was ghost dog.the mob is supposed to be hitting the sheets and in high alert but they are a bunch of bumbling idiots.this the only problem I have with this scene.the mob knew he was coming.they are the ones who should have been posted up with a couple of snipers.the other scene that bothers me is when they trash ghost dogs place.the evidence that it was his place is everywhere and they just thrash the place and leave.they don't set up a ambush?all they do is piss off a professional killer.it makes no sense whatsoever.yes they are incompetent but not this bad.they knew where he lived and ghost dog would have been killed because he was completely surprised they found out where he lived.it is stupid and makes 0 sense.other then that it was a great movie.mabey i am mising something.mabey the father wanted to die so his daughter could keep the family going because she after his death could.she would have the money and the debts that the father had would go away.
I feel like Ghost Dog and Leon The Professional could exist in the same universe. A reboot of them crossing paths could be amazing. I wonder if they would be allies or enemies
I like how he has this sort of mutual understanding with vago at the end, and vago dies lie a noble- it was always considered the right way to die in an upright position.
This movie opened my eyes to the amount of range this guy has. I knew that he was a pretty well known Hollywood actor specifically for his craft but hooooly shit. This man is a living legend.
GHOST DOG has been confirmed as having been picked up by the Criterion Collection for restoration and distribution!!!!!!!!!! Jim Jarmusch admitted it days ago at a Q and A!!! Stay tuned for more to come on the topic!
@@justicewinters8573 www.criterion.com/films/31032-ghost-dog-the-way-of-the-samurai But if you want it for 50% off, wait until next month and purchase the edition at Barnes and Noble when the store has its 50% off sale for Criterion Collection films for the month of July. You will save a lot that way.
That'd be kinda tight actually. Dude would probably fit well in the Boondocks style too, because they imitate other martial artist with a Hip-Hop twist
Chiburi - the act of shaking the blood off of the blade upon completion of its use and before resheathing the sword. Works well with the characterization of Ghost Dog being a modern samurai in everything he does.
The ongoing theme that the mob is old and running out of respect & money is amusing (0:14) the creaking, un-maintained gate with the for sale sign, all the old mobsters, etc.
i watched the trailer, all the guns looked too small in his hands. They should gave him some double desert eagles, they would look normal in his hands.
Fun fact: Japanese warriors weren't called "Samurai" (which is a noun which means "to serve") Japanese warriors were called "Bushi" (Bu= War/Combat/Military and Shi= man/person) and Bu+Shi+Do = "The War/Combat/Military person's Way or Path"
Hello. BU means warrior SHI means death DO means way BUSHIDO means the way of the warrior is death. In Japan, the number 4 is also SHI. Many Japanese consider 4 an unlucky number.
i remember when i first rented this with my gf when i was like 14. i didnt feel this movie at all thinking ”what the hell is this”, and then this showdown came. it was great but unexpected given how slow and confusing i thought the movie had been up until then. few years later, bit older, and this movie is amazing and holds a special place in me and always will
Louie at this point wasn't terribly concerned with the mafia's safety anymore. Just his own. He somewhat expected this would happen hence his hiding in the bathroom when he knew what was going on. (Ghost Dog considers him to be his master)
Hear all soundtrack that master RZA built for this film, it is amazing. That particular beat is from "Strange Eyes - Sunz Of Man Ft. 12 O' Clock, Blue Raspberry"
The movie is not "cheesy", it's a sad irony. The protagonist is a poor lost kid who found a meaning in his cruel life by adopting a culture from a random book (along with some visual aspects) that resonated with his feelings.
@@neithere I think it's both tragic and cheesy. The motif with the cartoons and the way the mafia acts like man children shows us the movie does ground itself with self-aware humor but it's also incredibly endearing in the way it recognizes this goofiness.
That's twice that Ghost Dog has walked into a room to kill somebody and had no idea that Louise is right there. There's something very mysterious about that girl that she can slip right under his radar like that.
The movie is indeed a masterpiece in every way; I just wish the ending was a bit different where instead of allowing himself to be killed by his master he rejected his master for his betrayal of him, killed him and went on to be a crusading ronin hitman using his deadly skills to help those in need, That would have been the perfect way to truly end the movie in a Japanese Samurai western style!💯😁😉👍
I always loved how this movie got symbolic revenge for all the decades of disrespect Black people have taken Mafia movies since at least as far back as "The Godfather" (has it really been 60 years?)...and how it portrayed mob hitmen as a bunch of fat, slow, ineffectual old turds 🤣
using gun in 8 direction is itself one of the samurai hand moves . search for hapo undo defence . and he is using the ikyo on the first guy before kill him . i dont know about his real life but even if they told him what todo hes doing it very great and hes doing it japanese not chinese or even okinava . old fashion samurai methods .
Considering how much of a wild card Ghost Dog was, I'm surprised if he really felt that safe around the guy (even though GD's did feel absolute loyalty towards Louie). Also it's a pretty big wager to assume that it actually WAS Ghost Dog shooting up the place. Considering the line of work they're in and all. Your POV makes good sense. But this detail still struck me as a bit weird.
* You hear people outside shooting, so you finish taking a piss because it's not smart trying to fight with a full bladder. OK cool, it makes sense. * Hold the gun with your crippled arm... turn around to close the door and zip your fly AFTER you step out of the loo? WTF?!?
