The Ghost Festival, also known as "Zhongyuan Festival" in Chinese, is a traditional Buddhist and Taoist festival held in several East Asian countries. According to Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month (鬼月), during which ghosts and spirits, including those of deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm to visit the living.
Families would offer sacrifices of food and burn ritualistic items like joss paper, believing these would be used by the spirits in the afterlife. It is also a time to pay respects to deceased ancestors and to appease wandering spirits, ensuring they don't bring misfortune to the living.
There are various activities, including preparing ritualistic food offerings, burning incense, and joss paper, and in some areas, even live performances and parades to entertain the wandering spirits. The festival is also sometimes called the Hungry Ghost Festival, emphasizing the belief that the offerings can satiate the ghosts who might be hungry or in need.
