The James River Reserve Fleet is an anchorage of the National Defense Reserve Fleet located on the James River at Fort Eustis, Virginia. It is the oldest of the original eight NDRF fleet sites and is currently one of three that is still in operation.

Nice video with interesting information on how these laid up ships are organised in different categories.

When I was station at Ft. Eustis Va back in the late 80's, we trained on this ships. Don't know which one, but it was pretty cool pulling up next to all of this ships.

I worked at the Philadelphia navy yard. It gets hot and humid in those ships in the summer I have to say from experience the carriers are the worst because we have to carry supplies and equipment through the ship. It's a long walk and stairwells

In 1967 I went through the US Army Transportation School at Ft. Eustis, VA. Just one of many classes learning how to operate LCM-8s, LCUs and tug boats. What is shown here is nothing compared to the number of vessels shown here. Many in '67 were Victory Ships left over from WW2. As the 'Nam war heated up they pull another ship out. I spent most of '68 working in the munitions port near Sattahip Thailand. 99% of the ships coming in with bombs and other munitions were Victory ships. Interesting times.

My Dad's ship, the USS Rainier, was originally built during WW2. It was an ammunition supply ship that specialized in underway replenishment of 5" and 8" naval artillery shells. He served on the Rainier during the Korean war and it was also used for several years during the Vietnam war. He was very proud of his service and especially proud that the Rainier continued to serve for so long.

I was there in 89 training aboard quite likely those very same LCUs, Mike boats and tugs. There were many more ships there then. We always referred to it as the "dead fleet". I always wondered what some of the older ones were....liberty ships. So thanks for your service and thanks for the info.

Question, I was stationed aboard USS Platte. I see you have several shots of her along with Monongahela and Merrimack. Is it possible to get some of that footage? I would like to use it, with your permission, in a video of the ship I am working on. I learned this morning PLATTE is no longer in the Ghost Fleet, neither is Merrimack. Both have been sent to LA for dismantling. Thank you

There was a lot more ships there back in the 70s then the government sold a lot of them to some countries to be torn down and some of them that still remains is leaking fuel into the river due to the deterioration of the fuel tanks and the ships hull

I passed these ships a couple times while traveling around the Chesapeake Bay. It's a strange sight. A little eerie . There area a few places on the bay that you are not allowed near because of bomb ordinances . I really miss the Chesapeake but not for these reasons.

It's interesting how some of those ships are anchored so close together, it looks like they are only inches apart, while others are spread really far apart. You would think they would anchor all of them closer together so they wouldn't take up so much room.
@beans2456

If you had a fleet of ships, would you jam them all together? Even though this fleet is inactive, that doesn't mean it isn't one.

The ones parked close to one another are roped together. This is called rafting. The rafts and single ships are anchored with enough room to allow them to swing with the tides and winds without colliding.

Could some of the larger ships not be turned into a ship that is full of cots to sleep in and a large galley and dining area. It could then follow troops who are deployed to any port in the world and be a safe place to feed and bed down troops who are deployed but off dty ? Also it could go to places like Haiti when there is a crisis like now because of the storm and people could bed down till the storm passes. These bvig hulks when anchored properly are storm proof are they not?
@beaconrider
@beaconrider 7 лет назад
They are hulks, no longer fit for human habitation. You would be better off fixing up an abandoned prison At least that wouldn't sink.

@beaconrider
@beaconrider 7 лет назад
An aircraft carrier from that era would not be useable because it would not be able to support modern aircraft. And that is if the machinery were intact and functional.
