People watch these videos, and I'm sure it seems impressive to most of them. But they will never know the feeling of awe you get from being up close to any of them. They are huge ships. Then when you see your first super carrier in person, it just takes your breath away. Still hard to believe that anything that large can actually float.

Being alongside of a Nimitz class birdfarm was awe-inspiring from the 04 level of our old Coontz/Farragut class DDG. It's very hard to explain exactly how enormous these carriers are. I'm from the era of Tomcats, Vikings and Intruders. Designation: Old Phart mark 1 mod 0 !

I still remember the first time I saw my ship (USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN-69). It was about 2100 and I could see those big letters lit up from all the way down at the other end of the road that runs along the piers. All I could do was look up at the enormous beast as I walked up the pier dragging my sea bag. I saw Enterprise once the day we got back from my second deployment in 2010. She had just gotten out of the yards and she looked amazing but odd still to the eye of someone accustomed to a Nimitz class carrier.

My dad worked on the USS Bulkey, USS Harry S. Truman, and the USS George HW Bush, and I can say from watching him leave and come home and going on base with him., they are the most massive ships I have seen. I even had the chance to go on the George HW Bush and my dad gave me a tour. I also had thanksgiving dinner on the Bulkey and did a halloween event on the Geaorge HW Bush, and they are truly amazing.I also remember the ships have distinct smell to them, not in a bad way though. I remember good times on Naval Station Norfolk, I remember my dad leaving and him coming home, and I will remember Naval Station Norfolk for that

Even as a younger fellow, it's still hard to look at. That ship had one of the longest careers in the Navy's entire history (other than USS Constitution and 1-2 others). Plus, it's the first nuclear powered carrier ever built. If only they could make it a museum ship!

@Charlie Robertson What's unbelievable is that they Totally destroyed All the F-14's for fear of any parts making it to Iran. And seeing how they can bring planes out of mothballs, how the US Navy could actually use a "New" F-14 now and how involved the construction of the Titanium wing boxes was, and just what a Horrible waste of Money For such a bad ass plane, I saw a picture of One, idk where the pic was taken, but there were literally trees growing through the frame of the F-14 ! Made me want to cry.

Besides some other ships there was the USS Anzio and I had an opportunity to get a tour. It was when I learned that they had 164 Tomahawks on board and that their 3D-Radar had a reach of 800 nautical miles, I knew there and than that all our German Navy was just a pathetic waste of taxes.

Most people don't realize that the reason the US is the most powerful navy in the world isn't because we've got a whole bunch of Burke-class Destroyers - it's because we have the logistics ships to keep our vessels moving, in combat-ready condition, on a regular and predictable schedule.

On the big E, to make the ship safe they have to rip the ship apart in order to remove the reactors so they can be safely disposed of. At that point it would cost to much to put her back together again to make a museum out of her. But parts of her will go to the new Enterprise just like parts of the previous Big E went into this one.

It's not just that. These super-carriers, even the old ones, are too "modern" in their construction to be turned into museums. Instead of scrapping CV-66 America, they did a month-long sink-ex on her in 2005 to see how durable they really are against modern weapons. After a month of conducting those tests, she still floated, so they scuttled her (conducting one final test while they were at it). The data gathered during these tests is being used in the designs of the Gerard R. Ford -class, and future carrier designs. That a +50-year-old ship can withstand such weapons fire and survive represents construction secrets that the US Navy would rather civilians (and potentially foreign spies) NOT be allowed to wander around and inspect at their leisure.

My only question is, are all those ships in port at the same time?? I realize coming from the Viet Nam era much has changed but man, what do we have at sea guarding our interests throughout the world?

It's heartbreaking that the Enterprise has to be scraped due to the logistics of removing the nuclear reactors. I'll bet they could make a fortune selling off pieces of her as souvenirs assuming that the steel is chemically and radiologically safe. I own a piece of some of the original steel plate from USS Texas that was torn out during structural renovation a few years ago.
