This is legitimately one of my favorite Halloween songs. My great granddad was named John, and since our last name is Bone... well, let's just say we enjoyed belting that song around the house.

At 71 I've never heard this song before. But as usual your lovely voices made for a pleasant treat to the ears.

Thanks to grade school I literally cannot go a year at Halloween without this song popping into my head at random. I saw this on my subs and went 'Oh my sweet cheese and crackers', and had to listen. You do this song such a perfect tribute. Haunting and melodic and perfect to match with your rendition of Hanging Tree.

I’ve always wanted to hear a rendition of this song that I could put on a playlist. This song probably played a big role in my love of ethereal sad songs when I was a kid. We sang it every year at Halloween in elementary school in the early 90s. Thanks for the hit of nostalgia!

When I heard this come up on Pandora while my buddies and I were driving on a dark and stormy night (I swear, clichéd though it is, that’s true) I had a flashback to being a little kid. I was probably 5 or 6, sitting on my grandpa’s lap as we carved a pumpkin, and he was singing this song, teaching it to me. I had forgotten that memory completely as well as this song until I heard your version. So, yeah, thanks.

I grew up inspired by great music teachers when I was in elementary and high school and took piano lessons. I'm now able to play all these folk favorites. I'm so glad this song is getting some love! Always a favorite sung in elementary school in a round. I once read it might be an old English folk song. Anyone who's interested can also check out Kristen Lawrence's 2005 versions; she wrote 4 more verses, which are awesome. I prefer the "bare bones" version myself. It's still one of my fave haunting melodies for Halloween!

I know this one! I sung this in a school choir once during Halloween, specifically "Wouldn't it be chilly with no skin on?" I remember being scared of that one song warm-up song that we often paired it with. it went like "Habt ihr gehört von dem Mord im Schloss?" (Have you heard of the castle murder?) "Wo das Blut in Strömen die Treppe runter floss" (Where the blood went down stairs in floods) Der Kopf ist ab, der Kopf ist ab, der. Kopf. ist. AB! *KRGH* (The head is off, the head is off, the. Head. Is. OFF! KRGH! [immitating bones breaking]) Me and my sis didn't like that one because we both have a very vivid fantasy and couldn't help but picture it in our heads. So whenever they sung it, we got to leave the room so we wouldn't cry, students either tried to cheer us up by saying "The head is a pumpkin! The blood is just juice!" and then there those who sung it from the top of their lungs when Halloween came around.

We did this song in rounds as a warm up in my college acapella group a lot!
