After years of traversing the City of Los Angeles, it's pretty funny that the strangest route I've ever come across happens to be West LA route AA6 (the route my street is included on).
As Los Angeles has grown over the years, so has the Los Angeles International Airport. In 1999, the airport began a voluntary buyout program of an adjacent neighborhood, the "Manchester Square" section of Westchester, due to noise complaints from residents and to commence the possibilities of future airport expansion. Over the years, more and more houses have disappeared and today there are fewer than 10 single family homes out of hundreds originally, and some oddball apartments. Often described as a park or prairie (or "Little Detroit") by locals, many streets have become a free campground for squatters which has caused quite the dispute between them, the original residents and the city. The rest of the properties will be eminent domain'd in the near future and the neighborhood will be turned into a giant rental car/transportation hub for the airport.
As with every household in the city, the Bureau of Sanitation pulls through every week to grab the trash. The recycling and green waste trucks just quickly run through and grab their few houses, but trash has a fun time. Many of the apartments that line the outside of the neighborhood are collected by the city, despite the fact that they're more than 4 units, and they don't have recycling and green waste service either which is very, very odd. To get even weirder, nearly all of the apartments are vacant and boarded up with LAX's restricted access signs posted. So why in the world do they still have trash cans, and how do they magically fill up with trash every week? Good question.
Anyways, disregarding the oddball apartments, many of the homeless encampments have grabbed cans from wherever and my trash driver will collect them out of the kindness of his heart, to help them out and to keep the streets clean(er). The actual houses are interesting because the city's rollout program that got the rest of Westchester in 2009 and 2010 never came through here, so many of them still have their original carts from the mid '90s.
This is a 2005 Peterbilt 320/Amrep Automated. Thanks to the driver; he's only been doing my route since late 2015 but he's been in my general area for as long as I can remember.

He's abusing the hell out of those carts lol. Great video man. I see what you mean about the noise. That's all you hear throughout the video.

Are all these barrels given to the homeless to avoid even nastier environments??? If so, well done by the City!!

This vid is so cool! It's pretty crazy to see him just cruising along picking up basically anything he can find. Looks like it was a nice neighborhood at one point based on the house left that I saw

yes, from what I've read about the place it used to be inhabited by Boeing and Raytheon engineers. Before it was overrun by transients and crime a few years ago it was actually still relatively nice and peaceful despite empty, ghost town-like streets. Thanks!

That lift up arm goes pretty fast, when the bins are empty. There must be a hydraulic issue somewhere before cans go flying airborne. Very skillful driver how he picks up the overflowing bins, great video of an aery area.

Nice fast paced arm makes for such a fun video. Yet the surrounding environment gives the video an eerie creepy feeling. When he was emptying those reghrig lines, I was always asking who filled them? Also either that was a juicy load or this truck has multiple cracks in it cause you could see fluids leaking from all over the truck body.

Great video man I don't remember this truck being that fast. Talk about a junkyard there is trash everywhere I liked how when he spilled trash he didn't get out to clean it up I wouldn't either that place is creepythanks for the awesome video great description as well.

I honestly think the city has ordered the driver to empty all carts that he sees. It's better than crews hand bombing the trash.

Very cool video man. By far one of the most unique LA videos ever. The whole area just looks like a landfill lol I thought it was actually super cool and neat to see the driver dump all the homeless garbage cans. Never heard of something like that but that's awesome. I thoroughly enjoyed this video

Wow talk about a dump! That was crazy to see all the tents lined up in the second clip. Anyway, thanks for the description, that sure was interesting to read about. I'm actually surprised that they send a truck through here despite no resident paying the collection fee. I guess that's one upside for having a government run operation, they have to collect everywhere. So strange that the Bureau didn't just collect the carts once people moved out. Seems like a huge waste of money having to send three trucks through here if they know that the properties aren't going to be inhibited anymore. The clip at 13:17...that's just nasty lol Lots of moments in the video where I thought that but that one really caught my eye with all that stuff laid out. Looks just like a bulk stop hahaha Fun truck too, definitely enjoyed how violent it is. Kept me entertained for sure. Awesome video and definitely look forward to more of this Ghost Town area; weird places like this really interest me.Great job!

there are the few "normal" single family houses still remaining like 12:36, 13:57 and 15:02 so they have to pull through for those in the first place. As to why the abandoned places are still collected, my guess is that either the DWP bill is somehow still paid (either by the airport or the property owner if it hasn't been sold yet) so the city hasn't pulled the cans out, or the water/power has been cut off but sanitation was never notified that those places are inhabited. It's also a possibility that they just don't really care since it's a ginormous municipality and they'd just be cleaning up the illegal dumps anyway if the cans weren't there. haha yeah, I'll have to try to get recycling and green waste swinging through although on this particular day I think greens had a total of two stops and recycling probably less than five... so it'll be tricky lol thanks aaron.

Your area is actually quite interesting. You have Surfridge, this, and some random streets in the greater Westchester area. It would be even more creepy if there were still houses in the Surfridge area and the trucks from Playa Del Rey would have to go down there and pick them up. I never remembered 771 being this violent. I remember in your old videos he'd moderately slam the cans or grip them high. Lol @ 3:13 & @ 10:34. Awesome stuff Toe Knee, had to leave a lil' paragraph on this juan
@WasteManTony

it is in many ways, especially considering it's part of LA proper despite the fact it's so isolated from the rest of the city end everything around it is independent. lol it never has been, and lately has been barely flipping lids. I just lucked out and the time I finally decided to film this area it slammed the hardest it ever has. The mechanic showed up and fixed it though which is why it's normal towards the end of the video. Yes, the constant juicing and the double lid flip were quite comical. Thanks

After reading the title I thought to my self "this is gonna be interesting" then I read the description and then I wonder what happened with the route. Now I'm watching the video and I I'm wondering why there is barely any houses. And how do these carts get magically filled? Who did you film with? Can you give me a few streets of the routes, I'd like to check it out for my self. On google maps of course. Are there a lot of poor,homeless people over here? Awesome video!

Wow that is something else. I've seen more than a few carts stolen by homeless people, can't say I've seen a trash man nice enough to take the homeless people's trash. The recycle and greens are private companies for the apartments, right? I'm not too up on my LA hauling rules. I love the fabrics and plastic bags sticking out of the sides of the bins, and how this driver manages to reach around them, although he isn't always successful. I wonder what those fluids were at 10:40? Presumably just garbage juice but you don't normally see garbage juice coming out of there. I agree with Alan, it is a very unique video, and one I enjoyed thoroughly so props to you good sir
@WasteManTony
@WasteManTony 7 лет назад
in theory, anything four units or under is collected by the city, with one recycle/trash can per unit and one greens can for the property. Anything five or more units is private hauler and there just has to be some form of recycling (whether or not they use the city multi-family recycling program with NASA, WM, and UWS collecting, or their regular trash hauler collecting both recycling and trash). In this case though despite some of these buildings being in upwards of 10 units they still somehow have city service, with simply no recycling or greens (which is actually illegal since the trash doesn't go to a MRF). Why they have no service I don't know, but it's a distinct possibility they originally did and the carts have just disappeared. The liquid is all extra juicy garbage juice as this was a couple days after LA's massive storm, and many of these carts are lidless or the lids are always open so they had a solid 6 inches of water in them. Thanks!

very nice. like other viewers I particularly enjoyed seeing him stop and help not only homeless residents but the city itself and grab those few carts. just the grey skies and healthy (for once) grass were cool even, and they made your shots riding behind the truck really neat. this whole thing is the kind of video I would have also wanted to make if I was in your place, always enjoy garbage trucks in weird places. good thing it sounds like you weren't approached by anyone, Mike and I spent barely a minute filming a truck in/near skid row before a homeless guy came up to the car and got on us for filming people sleeping in the streets ("this is their home, what do you think you're doing") on a totally different topic, how does the driver of a truck with autorev like this cut off revving for an overflowing cart? I noticed your driver doing that several times here and just started wondering if you might know, or can find out. thanks and good work on this unique video with a new taste, much enjoyed
@WasteManTony
@WasteManTony 7 лет назад
Trashman242 thanks Scott, much appreciated. I've always kind of liked this area's uniqueness and rural-like characteristics given it's in the middle of the city. Lol the clip towards the end with the 3 overflowing cans by all the tents cut out because I noticed a few people staring at me and walking in my direction... So I cut that one short and moved haha. All of the city's pre-2011 trucks have an auto-neutral switch that has to be flipped on and then off at every can that gives the clamps some gas as they go up/down, unlike the newer trucks that automatically just put themselves in neutral as you stop to dump a can. When he wants to dump a can slowly he just doesn't flip the switch to the "on" position or turns it off if he had it on earlier in the cycle. You can also just hold the grab switch while dumping a can and it'll slow everything down. Kind of like a work brake without the "brake" part lol. Thanks again
