The city of Manhattan Beach is serviced by Waste Management - LA Metro. In this city are some of the nicest, safest, hardest working drivers I've met. In this video, we'll follow six drivers on route and meet up with several others at the end.
(0:00) - 631323: Almost immediately after arriving here, I saw this truck in the distance delivering a couple recycle carts to a house. This truck is an ex-Western Waste Industries unit, as shown by the orange paint on the chassis. This truck is from the Compton Hauling facility, as they do all the cart maintenance for the South Bay cities. Behind the wheel is Robert, a 25 year employee of Waste Management.
(0:18) - 103911: A block over from 631323 was Janson in 103911. I got to talk with him a lot when he was on break. He knows all the city of Carson drivers very well, as he was working there for a while until a few years back when he transferred to Manhattan Beach. He told me who else was working in the city that day, and where, so that helped me find the other drivers very easily. Tony has filmed Janson before, back when the city was mainly filled with Amreps (link below).
(5:09) - 103912: While filming Janson, I ran into Manuel on recycling. I followed him for a little while and got a couple clips. Manuel is a 13 year employee of Waste Management.
(6:56) - 103918: After biking around for at least two miles up and down the steep hills of the city, I finally found 103918, the number one truck I was looking for. Behind the wheel of this truck is one of the friendliest drivers I have ever met, Santos, who is a 14 year employee of Waste Management. He has one of the coolest operating styles in my opinion, and even though he isn't a consistent lid flipper, I really find his truck entertaining. Another thing I really like is that this truck is a double logo unit. I think this makes the truck look really nice compared to the other units that don't have that. Brief clip of 210480 appears in one of the clips of Santos.
(10:00) - 103957: While waiting for Santos to collect and back out of a private street, I ran into Asael, who works recycling opposite to Santos. Really nice and funny guy - he was messing with Armen while on break.
(13:06) - 103909: I was making one last round through the route section and stumbled upon Richard "Big Rick" Ryan in Martin's truck, 103909. Martin is the driver I met during the LA Metro tour, who is out because of a hand injury. This is the second time I met Rick; last time, he was subbing for Jose Ochoa, #103958.
(13:31) - I saw several trucks head over a hill, and as I turned the corner, several garbage trucks were lining up on Manhattan Beach Blvd across from Polliwog Park. On the Wednesday and Friday routes, many drivers meet up here after route for a short time before heading to the Carson Transfer Station. I got to meet Armen, driver of 103718, who was working an open route. The mini Ford F-550 Wayne RL surprised me when it drove by, as I didn't know LA Metro had one as well. The body on that truck is a refurbished unit that was taken off of an Isuzu chassis.
A total of nine trucks appear in this video.
Some information I received from the drivers:
I found out that many of these drivers work six days a week. Santos and Janson both told me that they work every other Saturday collecting the public containers across the city. As for the McNeilus ZR trucks, all the drivers said they loved them compared to the Amreps. Many of their routes are filled with tight streets and low hanging powerlines, and the ZRs are able to get through those a lot easier surprisingly, especially when you consider how far the grippers of the ZR stick out. The slower arm speed is due to the alleys on the Thursday route, as the drivers said the Amreps were too violent in such small areas. Last piece of information I received was that Jose-Luis, the driver I filmed last time in Manhattan Beach (truck #103910), transferred to the commercial section, and now drives FL in Manhattan Beach. Several others have filmed him, so be sure to check out their videos.
Thank you so much to the Waste Management - Manhattan Beach team for their amazing service and for being so friendly. This video is dedicated to all the drivers! Hope you guys find the video!
All fallen trash was picked up by me or the drivers.
