Ghostbusters 1984 somehow walks the line between cult classic and massive box office success. Bringing together some of the best comedic minds of the era it managed to capture lightening in a bottle with a cast consisting of Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson. It's strange and funny and dirty and odd. And every sequel we cover in the coming weeks will not be as good. Thanks for watching out Caravan Of Garbage review.

Ernie Hudson has one of the best lines in the film "I'm Winston Zeddmore, Your Honor. I've only been with the company for a couple of weeks, but these things are real. Since I joined these men, I've seen shit that'll turn you white!"

"If there's a steady paycheck in it, I'll believe anything you say." "Ray, when not someone asks if you are a god, you say YES!" "I have seen shit that'll turn you white!" "That's a big Twinkie." "I love this town!" Winston may have gotten less screentime than the other three, but out of all the busters he has the probably the biggest percentage of absolutely classic lines and moments relative to the amount of screentime. Ernie Hudson was right to be pissed off about Winston getting heavily downgraded, but he steals the scene just about every time he's on screen.

@@dantheanimator5072 You've got it all backwards. Twinkies has been nothing but a march TOWARDS preservatives and less normal ingredients. When they started out in the 30s, they were full of things like butter and milk. The _cream_ filling was actual (banana) _cream._ They had to get rid of those and replace them with inferior replacements to make them longer lasting. Plus they had to dump in a ton of other ingredients you would only use if you had to make something last. In the 80s, they switched to HFCS. Now I think the difference in flavor between cane sugar and HFCS is overblown, but it wasn't a change to make them healthier. They've continued this way ever since. There was no change in recipe to remove preservatives or make them "healthier". In fact, the Twinkies of today have the longest shelf life they've ever had: 45 days.

Originally the moment Ray gets pleasured by the ghost came from a sequence where he and Winston went to "Fort Detmerring", and Ray falls asleep wearing a military jacket he found. The humour was completely misfired - Ghostbusters was funny because of how underplayed the reactions were. The juxtaposition between supernatural horror and New York nonchalance was funny even if you had no context for the kind of place New York is. Four leads tumbling over each other for the most amount of improv misses the mark by several miles. The original leads were reserved schlubs who couldn’t believe the week they were having. Honestly, it wasn’t until they announced the 2016 movie that I found hour that Ghostbusters had a massive, rabid fanbase. I knew a lot of people who liked it and had it on DVD/Blu Ray, but they never talked about it, dressed up as a Ghostbuster, or wrote fan fiction. I remember it as a child, and it was obviously popular. But I was taken aback by how many people still LOVED it.

SAME. I swear, people barely talked about their apparently fundamental LOVE for the franchise until they announced the 2016 version, like I knew people LIKED it and the merchandise, like there were some cute lunchboxes, and I had watched it once or twice as a kid due to my dad and uncles and older people, but didn't exactly fall in love with it. But in 2016, I guess suddenly it became a sacred piece of art.

Then you weren’t looking hard enough. People have been putting together their own screen accurate props and costumes from Ghostbusters for decades. There are multiple feature length fan films. It’s one of the greatest, most perfect comedies of all time and was and still is a cultural phenomenon of course it has a rabid fan base

@@penguinsrbirds2 Dude, Ghostbusters have been one of THE most beloved movies of us 80's kids ever since it came out. It was huge back then, continued to be one of those movies that seemingly EVERY kid had watched during the 90's, and during the 00's it solidified as a pop culture classic. Eeven way before the 2016 film was annpunced, I honestly think "Ghostbusters" was among the most common answer among people of my generation to the question "What is your favorite movie?". Like maybe not on the level of Jurassic Park or the original Star Wars trilogy, but definitely in that ballpark.

Also, funny you should mention "Thee Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" because I think it succeeds in its goals to nearly the level that Ghostbusters did. Somebody had this totally insane idea for a movie and then had to figure out "yeah, but howr'e we going to do THAT?!" It's silly and campy and self aware like Ghostbusters and had the same nonsensical "well, now THIS is happening." I dare say, if Murray, Akroyd, Ramis and Hudson had starred in ABBA8D, it would have been a bigger hit than Ghostbusters!

My parents absolutely love this movie, I think seeing this must’ve been one of their first dates so it was always on in my house… and as a child it scared the CRAP out of me… then I gave it another go when I was a teen and I’ve loved it ever since. It’s just great! Like my nephew, on his own free will(!) at like 2 or 3 years old put this on by himself and has loved it ever since and I love that weird little monster for that😂it’s just a great film. And I agree James, Harold Ramis is the best character.

Ghostbusters legit made me fall in love with the art of cinema. I hadn’t seen a movie that really grabbed my child brain’s attention like Ghost Busters. I remember the exact moment in 1999 i was digging through my older brothers VHS collection and the cover art on the VHS popped out at me and I put it in the player to fall in love. I will always have a soft spot in my heart for Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis, Rick Moranis and Ernie Hudson.

Contrary to popular belief, Ernie Hudson was not some "random" guy who lucked into the rewritten role of Winston Zeddmore. Hudson had worked with director Ivan Reitman the previous year in "Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone" (with Reitman as executive producer). The two men knew each other and Hudson, who was stuck in the hell of episodic TV at the time, had made it known that, if Reitman ever needed a favor, that he'd make time to help out. Reitman needed a replacement for Murphy and Hudson, who was filming two feature films, a TV movie and episodes for two TV shows, somehow made time. Like they say, it's who you know...

Ah, just had another memory. So this movie was so huge when it released that a physical ghostbusters store opened up in a neighborhood near where I lived. My friend and I rode our bikes there and would just stare at what I'm certain was garbage trinkets. They had a "fan club" you could join, which I absolutely did, and you got some trash for your trouble. All I remember is a membership card, a patch (that was later sewn onto my ghostbusters halloween costume, thank you very much), and a pin that said "we came, we saw, we kicked its ass!" on it. I was so proud of that pin. That's it. I'm calling it. I'm the #biggestghostbustersfanofthepodcast

You guys should cover the Ghostbusters video game. I'm pretty sure it's canon and it does a lot more of the dimentional adventure stuff that the original script touches. An interesting piece of information about the Ghostbusters game is the older generation ports for it actually played out quite differently with a cartoonish style, some boss fights and set pieces being completely different, and the whole thing being a little more PG with less scary stuff. You fight a possessed slime T-rex skeleton in a museum in that one which is pretty sick. I believe I heard somewhere that Dan Aykroyd prefers that version to the scarier but intended new-gen version. The remastered new-gen version is available on Steam. Fun game with solid mechanics, a few horribly difficult sections, and sadly no possessed slime T-rex :(

My head canon with the Thorazine is that it was Dana’s. It’s often prescribed as an anti-psychotic, and it’s possible that in the 3 days it took her to go to the Ghostbusters, she might have initially assumed she’d had a psychotic break. Her mother also asks her about it (seemingly) on the phone later. “No, uh, just the one time.” Also, having met Atherton, he’s one of the nicest celebs I’ve encountered. He was super gracious and embracing of Ghostbusters fans.
