Ghostbusters' Stay Puft Marshmallow Man - Art of the Scene 

The Stay-Puft Marshmallow scene is my favorite scene from any movie ever. From that moment when Gozer asks the Ghostbusters to pick their opponent, I was glued to the TV as a kid & it still gives me goosebumps today. The reaction of Ray when he realizes that he has just chosen a giant marshmallow man is comedy gold. Then Stay-Puft appears & it's just amazing. This scene doesn't get enough recognition because this is the scene that made the original Ghostbusters a beloved classic. If you remove it & just have them fighting Gozer for 5 min., it doesn't have the same payoff as Stay-Puft. How many other films have taken a fictional character, put them on the screen for less than 3 min., & turned that fake character into a universally recognized character that will forever be loved by the fans. Oh, & he's supposed to be main villain too.

The balance between hilarious and terrifying was perfect for this movie

I'm glad Dan Aykroyd stuck to his guns, because the reveal of the Stay Puft Marshmallow man is one of my all time favorite comedic moments in a movie EVER. It's just so damn genius.

Effects like this are so much more meaningful because we're not exactly sure how it was done. With CG, you know it's simply done on a computer every single time.

You can really only see these kind of interesting behind the scenes making of clips for movies made before 1995. Anything later is just "Yeah, we got a bunch of computers to do it."

Still missing you, Harold Ramis. Your comedic genius can never be replaced.

Am I the only one that found the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man fucking TERRIFYING? I mean, that giant monster walking in Manhattan with that grin ready to destroy you?

I was so fascinated from the Marshmallow Man in that movie. I had him as a toy in my childhood end of the 80s. I was so proud to own it.

i liked Ghostbusters 2 and feel the critics were too harsh and their stupidness kept there from being any more movies being made

I love Mr. Stay Puft! I would have loved to have been able to be in the theater during the initial opening of Ghostbusters and witnessed the reaction by the crowd to seeing him on film for the first time...it must have been surprising (yet funny as hell) to be sitting there in the theater watching the climax and suddenly see a giant evil marshmallow man walking the street!

Stay Puft’s evil face is hilarious.

This movie stills holds up today, its fantastic, one of my favorite films. I also don't know what the big issue with the second one was, I thought it was also a good film. Too bad it will probably be ten years before they reboot it again and we get a film worthy of the name, if the franchise ever recovers.

I actually love the sequel.

You could see that Mr Staypuft was on a set when heading towards Central Park West but the fx and the explosion was amazing

Eberts comments about Ghostbusters 2 is the reason his jaw started melting off his face. He looked a lot like Stay-Puft when his face was melting.

Ghostbusters II is pretty good for today's standards.

Looking back, the marshmallow man was a pretty risky move. The fact that is was a subtle cross between the Michelin Man and the Pilsbury Doughboy was a joke that the audience not only got and appreciated, but LOVED it. This film wouldn't be as big without that scene.

The Stay Puff Marshmallow Man terrified me when I first saw Ghostbusters as a child. I didn’t find him silly at all. His facial expressions, his growls! They definitely made the right call.

I like the second ghost busters!

I thought stay puft was scary asf, just an adorable character making roaring sounds while it’s stomped around making earthquake esc sounds while staring at our protagonists with that cute but creepy smile….just terrifying

I respect all the work that went into making the face movable, but it is so subtle in the film, you barely notice. Oh well, that's how it was back in the day when you couldn't do everything in post production. Still a perfect scene.

I love this series and I toss my vote in for the first use of bullet time in The Matrix

I watched ghostbusters like 1 time per day or 2 days and I loved it (I was 3 years old)

As much as I like these videos I feel like they sometimes miss the "scene" part. Here, for instance, there's so much focus on Mr, Stay Puft that the scene featuring him doesn't really get discussed in terms of how it works as a complete scene.

STRANGELOVE (1964) Major Kong riding the bomb. There, that ought to be enough to get you started.

Might be neat to do one on the original Jurassic Park. They nailed the dinosaur scenes, I think they were based on a mix of animatronics and CGI.

Hi to you all. I ;played the temple dog and a staypuft puppeteer on the original GHOSTBUSTERS. I enjoyed this very much. If you ever do another I'm happy to help...great.

I'd love you to do the "massacre scene" (or whatever you wanna call it) from Taxi Driver. Or possibly the iconic baptism montage from the godfather. Or one about a great edit (2001 a space odyssey bone throwing moment or the match cutting to a rising sun in the desert from Lawrence of Arabia). One of those would be awesome.

Definitely do something from The Shining, either the bar scene with Lloyd or Nicolson's "I'm not going to hurt you" speech going up the stairs. Thanks : )

I'm fascinated by Akroyd's original script which I believe not only was much bigger but had Ghostbusters as an everyday emergency service as common as the fire dept. I'd really have liked to see some of that make its way into a Ghostbusters 3 than this horrible re-boot that's coming.

I would love to see a video that shows the stuff that was directly "inspired" by scenes from Battleship Potemkin. So many great scenes from other great films give direct homage.

I'm still not quite sure why they decided to choose an existing building in Central Park West but re-model it to seem many more stories taller. Like, why not just choose an existing building that's already that tall?

Practical effects will always look better than CGI.

How about some of the effects from the 1966 John Frankenheimer film, "Grand Prix" ... especially the in-car shots and the opening crash through the haybales into the harbor at Monaco?

The best VFX movies are ones that use a mix of techniques. They're the ones that amaze you once you find out how it was done. But yes, physically grounded VFX are cool cuz they require a different kind of ingenuity and creativity to make them work. Still love CGI just as much though
