Ghosts N' Goblins is regarded as one of the more difficult games in the NES library. Ghosts N' Goblins allows the player to control a knight on a perilous journey to rescue the princess, battling zombies, ghouls and demons on the way. Follow the Nerd in this episode as he sacrifices his sanity to save the princess and to be able to say, "I beat Ghosts N' Goblins"!

The hard way? The fact that you reached the last level means you had a ton of hard time already, so failing one extra time to learn about the shield doesn't make the experience any worse than it already is. :D

You know something, James is actually a pretty damn good NES player and has a couple feats under his belt. As of now he has beaten Castlevania Castlevania II: Simon's Quest Famicom Transformers Legend of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link Street Fighter 2010 Ghosts N' Goblins Frankenstein Predator I think people don't give him enough credit cause these are all pretty damn hard to beat.

And what are the sources for this "fun fact"? Because I can't find anything confirming that the word unicorn was used this way. And the horse-like unicorn myth is over a thousand years old referenced in biblical texts. You use rhinos as an example, but Europeans had little to no knowledge of African/indian rhinos in the middle-ages. Reports of African rhinos didn't spread through Europe until the 17th century. Where people falsely identified the animal to be the "unicorn" described in the ancient myths due to its vague similarities, and some still argue that ancient rhinos breeds might have had some influence on the myths origin. But we are still talking about the mythical creature "unicorn", and not some generalized category.

Ghosts n Goblins actually came out in the US in arcades before Super Mario Brothers did, so it got a lot of things right (such as having secrets, varied level settings, a sense of progress, and an end goal) seeing that it’s one of the earliest modern sidescrollers.

If anyone is wondering, if you don't get the shield, you can't fight the final boss, when you beat both Satans, you get a screen that says "THIS WEAPON HAS NOT EFFECT... TRY AGAIN !! GET A (shield)" and sends you back to level 5

In design, yes. In terms of difficulty, not really. I find ghosts and goblins harder than castlevania 1. Castlevania doesn't get insanely difficult until the 2nd half. Ghosts is goblins is hard as crap starting at level 1. Also castlevania has a health bar. With ghosts and goblins you get 2 hits and you die.

It's pretty common in arcade shmups. I think it's because they didn't have enough space to store more stages so they just repeat the stages and make them harder

ThisIsLotso I, too received my NES 30 years ago. Christmas of 1988, so in two days, it will be exactly 30 years ago! And this year, I asked for the NES Classic Edition (which, coincidentally, includes Ghosts and Goblins), so it will be quite fitting if I receive it.
