Beautiful scene from Ghostworld". Wonderfully directed by Terry Zwigoff. Wonderfully acted by by Thora Birch.
Enid (Thora Birch) puts on a old blues record she bought from Seymour. The song is "Devil Got My Woman" by Skip James (1931). The music is powerful, raw, and very very real. Its clear Enid has never heard music quite like this. She listens, deeply. As soon as the song ends, she plays it again. She will listen to it over and over. It changes the way she thinks of Seymour from someone she thought of just as doofus to make fun of, to a friend and confidant, someone she will see as having value.
As DVD Journal critic Dawn Taylor stated perfectly: "..Thora Birch's poignant portrayal of Enid is dead-on - she captures the character from Dan Clowes' graphic novel and then piles on layers of nuance, making Enid snotty, hard as nails, smart, vulnerable, passionate, clueless, plain, blasé, beautiful ... in short, giving an insanely complex and believable performance, far more deserving (in this reviewer's opinion, anyway) of a Golden Globe or Oscar than any other actress in 2001. "
If you want to see the rest of the scene its here:

This perfectly illustrates the moment you hear a song and realize that it can change your life. One of my favorites moments ever in all of film.

I just wish this clip included the bit when Enid asked him "Are there any more songs like that one?" And Seymour replies "There *are* no more songs like that one."

This is one of my favorite scenes in all of cinema. Her quiet performance really captures what it feels like when you hear something that speaks to your soul. And Skip James does it like nobody's business.

Her room is filled with so much neat stuff....my fave is her poster for the movie "The World of Henry Orient" , which is also about teenagers and one of the best comedies ever made...and the teens in that 1964 film give great performances, just as Thora and Scarlett do in "Ghost World" !!

Sadly, the video cut off before the next scene: "That one song _Devil Got My Woman?_ I mostly keep playing that over and over. Do you have any other records like that? "There _are_ no other records like _that."_

Thats happened to me, where I hear a song and I just have to listen, don't want to move or even breathe so I don't disturb it. For whatever reason, songs like that shock you, they're not just good songs, there isn't even a way to describe it. Its also quite interesting to think of how it makes you relate to a person who is drawn to the same song to the same degree.

This was me, when I fist heard Jessica Lea Mayfield, or Laura Gibson on an NPR playlist. I sat there, head tilted back hitting replay over and over. Chest caved in, I breathed out a slow, huge, thick puff of smoke... except I wasn't smoking. It felt like I was though.

This scene is where the camera is the most active in the entire movie, in which we have fade-outs, the camera moving without characters moving and one of the few insert shots, or even tight close-ups in the movie.

Sea Parade -- back in the day, like when this movie is set -- kids, renters, people living in 'bed-sitting' rooms (not as nice as Enid's & shared bathrooms) often had something called a 'Phillips Dancette' -- again, not as nice as Enid's; they ran off HUGE batteries, but at least they were portable!!!! Whole collections were made by virtue of this appliance......! I love the calm softness of this scene, & we get an insight into how she really is 💔
