this segment was just too cute! I remember the moment I realized "oh, I really need to pay attention to what she's saying"--in my teens, I had been learning a lot about Italian cooking, homemade pastas and sauces, how to tackle Christmas Eve dinner, etc, and then I was watching Giada teach how to make a timbale on the Food Network. She completely captured my heart, I realized there was a lot more to learn than just the fan favorites, and she motivated me to expand my self study in cooking

Awwww I’ve always loved Giada! A couple of my (and my family’s) favorite recipes of all time were from recipe books of hers I followed. In particular- I made this ‘lemon brodetto (a broth) with seared salmon, on a bed of a mint-pea purée. It’s just beautiful, light, healthy, and also a great get-well soup if you’re not feeling well, kind of an alternative to traditional chicken soup. The mint-pea purée component I’ve also made just by itself as a more creative hummus. It might call for or you can add chickpeas too. The mint is so good, but basil would probably also be lovely. Anyway.... love this lady. And her healthy-yet-indulgent diet seems to be working for her she looks fantastic at almost 50?!!!😍✨💕✌️

I don’t think she’s trying to prove a point, if she grew up speaking Italian it’s probably more natural for her to pronounce it correctly. I grew up bilingual (English and Italian) and when I speak Italian I pronounce English words correctly, and vice versa, why would I intentionally mispronounce words?

"Fava bean" is NOT just a fancy name for lima beans, they're different species and don't taste the same at all. Also, fava beans are surrounded by a tough membrane that you have to peel off before eating.

I actually like Giada, but she's not pronouncing spaghetti right. The IPA pronunciation of the word is "spəˈɡɛɾi" The first vowel is a schwa e that sounds like the e sound in "father." The second vowel is the open e that sounds like the e sound in the word "egg."There may be a dialect that Giada is using that pronounces it that way, but based on everything that I know, Stephen's pronunciation is actually closer to the correct Italian pronunciation. I've heard some Italians pronounce the second vowel more like the ei diphthong in the word say, but that's not what the internation phonetic alphabet says that it is.

Click on the little play icon that looks like a speaker. There's one for different languages. You can compare the American, British and Italian pronunciations along with a bunch of other languages as well.

One option is you could try the dictionary that I linked. They have a bunch of different languages pronouncing the word. I'm not sure if I could spell it out quite the way that you're wanting me to, but I'll give it a shot. Spuh-geh-tee or the other pronunciation that I've heard, but isn't in borne out by the phonetic alphabet: Spuh-gay-tee

Some odd bits of info about Giada. Her original last name is De Benedetti. She was the oldest of four when her mom and dad got divorced. Her mom took the kids and moved to California where she and the other kids took her mother's surname De Laurentiis. She has a bachelors degree from UCLA in Social Anthropology. She at one time voiced a character on the children's show Handy Manny. And she was inducted into the Culinary Hall of Fame.

My grandfather was straight off the boat from Italy and all my moms relatives were Italian, both from northern Italy, Perugia, and southern Italy, well Sicily, and no one every pronounced spaghetti like Giada did. Plus she was rude as hell, unless that is her way of flirting. If so it doesn't translate well. Stephen was, as always, a good sport.

I remember talking to an Italian barber about drinking and he said he never drinks. I was surprised and mentioned how Italians loved their wine and he said, oh yeah I drink wine but not alcohol. Apparently, wine doesn't count.
