Ya Xbox is the only system I've never owned but I really like Phil. I hope he stays around for a long time and that his work and passion really pay off for him.
Great to see Giant Bomb continuing the tradition of having a long, honest interview with Phil. Also Phil continuing to be super open is fantastic, you just don't see that from anyone else in his position really. Props to Matt Booty too.
I really think this format works better with 1 person interviewing. Tamoor literally kept piling on top of Jeff's questions before Phil had a chance to answer, causing the following answers to be more... all over the place.

@@PirateOfTheWastesit more came across as him cutting off the other 2 hosts and trying to show off, his questions went on for so long and asked so little comparatively, made for a lesser experience
The Giant Bomb at Nite content has been my favourite thing from GB in absolutely ages. Big props to Grubb for managing all these interviews, his questions were always very insightful, I learned to much about devs, publishers and journalists. These are the discussions that must be had, and I wish GB could bring up content like this more often, even though I understand that it's way easier to make happen when everybody is in town. It's just that it really feels like the type of content in which the team thrives, as the great journalists that they are. I was first to say that GB content in the past few months looked kinda stale, but this is such a great reminder of the talent that is on the line up, thank you so much !
I was ok with Tamoor's demeanor up until that 34:30-ish mark, when Lucy asked Phil an excellent question, Phil bounced it back to her, and then Tamoor intercepted it and continued even after getting razzed by Phil. C'mon dude. Ultimately, I think Jeff Gr. is doing a great job of filling the shoes of Jeff Ge. throughout this entire GB @ Nite series, and I really hope it's just him 1-on-1 with Phil next year.
I think Tam and Lucy are definitely partners in crime to the point where they're probably used to doing that to each other (you can see Lucy gesture to him to hand off the response afterwards anyway), but yeah the interjection was a little awkward lol
Extremely poor behaviour, and he needs to pull his head in with that crap. Also Jeff asking really great questions throughout, only for Tam to jump in and cut Phil/Matt off from answering in order to bloat the question with his own additional spin. I mean, come ON dude - do you really need to do that? I usually really enjoy Tam on content, but his ego or lack of self-awareness really did him zero favours in this interview.
Phil is the man, he brought Xbox back from the brink of extinction after Don Matrick. Xbox is not where it needs be yet but I have faith Phil. He cares about Xbox and this industry.
He really came in at a terrible time and has done a great job. He came in when Xbox was really looked down on and also when games have just gotten bigger and bigger and take forever to make. All his work is about to pay off and Xbox is about to have a big come back.
Phil Spencer is the master of making corporate double speak not sound like corporate double speak, and he's incredibly good at it too. But you can also tell he's a gamer and cares, even if Microsoft pulls the rug out from under him sometimes (Redfall etc) I've never seen Matt Booty before, but he seems cool also.
Has xbox have the greatest track record for games ? No but we all can admit phil is a rare boss. Sony definitely doesn't have a guy who plays games and attends to all game shows even if it isn't xbox. The man truly loves games . We all can disagree with things he said and maybe did but we can agree he is great for xbox and gaming
I think Xbox is headed into a direction where they become less about selling consoles and more about dominating other platforms. They understand that Playstation is too big in the console market to actively compete with so they've decided to buy out big companies and keep games exclusive to their own platforms. Whether it's PC or Xbox, as long as you're not on a PlayStation it's a win to them all the same.
@@thehorse5307 Yes, exactly. And PlayStation is kinda sleeping on the spot. They are just now branching out to PC and still with years worth of delay so by the time theirs games hit the PC all interest on the games already died out. This and how reluctant they are to fully embrace their GP counter part by not putting their first party games day and date there. When they realize they were betting on the wrong horse might be too late and GP too big.

I think it's down to different definitions of Gameplay rather than whether it was CG or anything. Like, I don't think that trailer showed more than 5-10 seconds of player controlled action, and even that seems generous. I loved the trailer and it exceeded my expectations for what would be revealed, but if someone says it doesn't look like gameplay I'd say "yeah, I think it's more about showing the tone and what the engine can do, maybe give a taste of the kind of set pieces you could expect in the game etc"
I’m with him, it wasn’t necessarily the graphics, it was the way the camera was moving. If anything it looked more like QTE gameplay where the camera tends to move in a more cinematic fashion but you don’t have as much control. Another example where Tam could have made a good point but fumbled it.
I know some people were griping about Tamoor et al. adding a bit of chaos to the interview, but I think everyone had superb questions to ask, and Phil keeping things light with some snippy attitude at Tamoor specifically was a lot of fun! Do I miss the one-on-one armchair format with Gerstmann? Absolutely, but the questioning here was absolutely just as incisive and provided some really great insight into Xbox's publishing philosophy. The new GB/GS team here is *absolutely killer*, and that's not even getting to the amazing couch work digging into the state of games media and journalism between Jeff Grubb and the other publications.
I appreciate Phil Spenser correcting Tamoor about Gamepass being "free". I get real sick of people attributing 'free' to things that aren't free. Gamepass isn't free. People do that with early access games too: "oh, the free update." That's stuff's not free. You already paid for the game dev to be done. Stop calling what you paid for 'free'. It's anti-consumer and dumb.
To the Xbox teams - I really loved the Fable trailer and am REALLY excited for that game. But my FAVORITE SURPRISE was Towerborne! WOW does that game ever look fun! Great work from everyone and I am so proud to be an Xbox fan!
Guys don't take my advice wrong. Try to give some breath to the interviewee next time. It's question after question and some come two people almost at the same time. Otherwise it was a great interview from Phil and even Matt Booty. Glad to see Phil remains as entertaining and nice to listen too. So passionate about this industry.
Really interesting interview - here's hoping the AAA Xbox games start consistently hitting and making my UGP sub worth it. Slight bit of constructive criticism: If Tamoor can get his questions out in like 20% less words, it would be stronger. At times it even seemed like Phil/Matt were starting to interrupt to speed up into the response.
The couch def makes Phil be more open lol. Phil asking if there is too many games on games pass is def interesting. I think Sony has way too many games on their streaming service compared to Xbox. Also think maybe would be easier moving forward especially if XBOX creates a separate app that is just for their games that will always be on the service.
She is but they’ve integrated more gamespot people into giant bomb to fill producer/creative content roles ever since the mass exodus of the og crew members.
53:33 I have watched this segment 5 times trying to figure out what the hell Phil was implying when he whispered "id". Is he jokingly referring to people saying id should take over Halo, or just saying that id is what he's looking at toward the future, some joke that went over my head? This is the second unsolicited id name drop in interviews from this showcase (the other coming from Todd Howard), whatever id is working has the entirety of Microsoft extremely excited
I was skeptical on how this would go without Jeff Gerstmann. Jeff and Phil always had a good dynamic and chemistry. However, you guys killed it. It was very natural and a great overall interview. Learned a lot of stuff here too. Great job folks
amazing how when Phil asks the question what do you think? they dodge the question entirely and the women is interrupted by the other two guys who don't answer either.
Phill your the best thing that happened to XBOX BRO...and if you ever need a 39 years of experience gamer and has 4 very good games ideas for xbox let me know i'm all xbox from day 1
Yea tamoor is super rude in this whole interview. Put away your phone, be a professinoal. Grubb was a great moderator and professional. i think he has the chops to be a great replacement for Gertsman. But tamoor kept interrupting people, and even his own collegue. I get this is a big deal for him, but so isnt it for everyone else on the panel. But seriously super unprofessional having your phone out while asking guests. Go over your questions before hand and you wont need your phone.
@@sonicstage1 Having your phone out while two of the biggest exec's in xbox gaming are on your couch not touching their phones along with your co workers not touching their phones. Super unprofessional regardless if hes looking at his notes.

I didn't have an issue with him until he totally intercepted Phil's question back at Lucy regarding Game Pass and choice paralysis. It was a great bit of the interview that got ruined, unfortunately.
To be fair, I think he only owns 3 or 4 shirts 😂 Phil loves Nintendo, it would be real funny if lying Jim Ryan was sitting there instead. Oh wait, that guy doesn't do shit in public.

I think that's a bit unfair. Phil specifically addressed just her a few times and they all chatted about stuff she raised. I do get why people think "the Tam interception" of that one question *looked* rude, but I think that's just because they literally had that conversation earlier in the day and he had stuff to say - I think it was just the vibe where it was OK. I think Lucy would have joked about it too after Phil's comment if she thought it was genuinely rude or anything.
At face value, Phil Spencer is a gamer. He takes a lot of flak for failures and little praise for success. He seems more relatable than Jim Ryan but these are also businessmen. It's gotta make money or it's axed. We've seen it with Days Gone and I don't see a Redfall 2 anywhere on the horizon. Gamepass is the future of Xbox and Cloud gaming will be its only outlet.

WHAT MAKES YOU THINK IT'S NOT GAMEPLAY? Well, Phil... it was mixed with in-game engine cutscenes and nothing was shown with HUD or anything that really stuck out as gameplay... sooooo yeah, that's why they asked that. 😂
you are dense. not all games need huds. they dont make a hud before anything else, then put gameplay around it. huds are overlays. that was gameplay buddy. the xbox bad sony good narrative doesnt fly anymore.
So phil says that he wants games to be more available for everyone yet takes away games from other platforms i.a. Playstation. He says he doesn't want any more exclusives yet goes and makes starfield and red fall exclusive when they had nothing to do with the development of each game and both were to come to ps5 as well before they were purchased. Im sorry but i dont believe anything that comes out of this guys mouth. Sure game pass is cool, but buying up big triple A companies by anyone should be a no go. Let them be independent.
I don't really get why. They either dial back the frame rate or a bunch of other stuff and they chose to go with the frame rate. 30fps isn't going to stop a good game being good. Purely in the abstract, 60fps is better than 30fps, and full real-time path-tracing is the best lighting model. In practice, you pick your battles depending on what you want to offer. 30fps is obviously playable enough, so whatever.
"this year we had some good releases, and then we had Redfall" :)) With Starfield we'll wait and see, but i have no faith in the new Forza, with all the bragging of "from the ground up", and they still use 8-10yo bad assets, they locked progression behind grind, because they dont know how to create a progression, they hid in-car camera because (speculation) they still dont have a proper steering wheel turn angle
