***** You're thinking of those tongue eating sea-lice. They're in the same family as isopods. And they're freaking nightmarish. Giant Isopods live EXTREMELY deep down in the ocean, on the floor. The only Sharks that have been seen so far that deep are Cat Sharks or Frill Sharks. And while they are rather small, Giant Isopods are actually rather timid creatures, much like they're much smaller land relatives.
PepeRolla that's not true at all. Giant Isopods are detrivores. There are smaller parasitic isopods but they're not the same. That's like saying a pillbug is the same as a giant isopod, it's just not true. People in some countries do actually eat these things though, it's pretty interesting.
xJazzy I was just wondering how simular they are to lobsters and crabs. As far as appetizing, imagine what was going through the mind of the first person to ever eat an oyster.
Both lobsters and isopods are members of the class Malacostraca (one of the groupings for crustaceans, for a potentially more familiar term). My best guess as to why lobsters are more common is simply due to the fact giant isopods, also called deep-sea isopods, are just that. Too deep underwater for people a few hundred years back to have easy enough access to, so it never became a common thing to eat. Having lived in a coastal city all my life, I love oysters! Lobsters aren't common here, so I haven't eaten it many times. Oysters used to be plentiful here - before too much human interference disastrously dwindled their numbers to next-to-nothing. They were eaten since there were so many and easy to collect. I don't know if you have tried oysters yourself, but I totally get why anyone wouldn't want to eat them!
Hi everyone, thanks for the comments. Just a note that I'm not a videographer by profession, and shot this video solely for illustrative purposes-hence the vertical format!
unfortunately, honey, this isopod is dead. their eyes are extremely sensitive to light, they live in the deeps of the water. the isopods need to be kept in a light tight container to have their vision studied. so yes, unfortunately, he is dead.
