Giant puffball, or Calvatia gigantea, is a mushroom that grows throughout North America. It is one of my favorite wild edibles because it offers an incredible amount of food value for the find and is easily prepared. In my area it is not uncommon for these to grow to be the size of a small beach-ball in prime conditions.
In this video I take you through the process of identifying this mushroom.
WARNING: Never take my advice on wild edibles at face value. RESEARCH FOR YOURSELF! Always consult a local expert before consuming ANY wild edible plant; ESPECIALLY MUSHROOMS!
If AFTER consulting a local expert on this, you decide to consume these, here are a few ways I like to prepare and consume them.
1) Slice thinly (1/4" - 1/2") and saute in either butter or olive oil. Serve as is with chicken or as a layer on a hamburger. As a note of caution, these things soak up oil readily so try not to over expose them to it.
2) Saute and mix in with scrambled eggs.
This mushroom has a texture close to that of either scrambled eggs or tofu yet has a very pleasant mushroom taste. Many folks refer to this as a breakfast mushroom because of its scrambled egg-like texture.
However you decide to eat these, they will quickly take on the flavor of whatever you cook them with (like tofu).
Because I am the only person in my family that eats mushrooms, I will saute an entire mushroom in one sitting and then freeze the excess for later use. They can also be dried for later use.

Absolutely LOVE to eat these mushrooms! Had seen them for YEARS growing all around.......Then I ended up moving to Colorado & a neighbor of mine told me they were edible! Then another neighbor took me out & taught me "Mushrooming" in the forest's of the Rocky Mountains of CO.! (9962ft elevation!) we even scored Chanterelle mushrooms!

Fungus among us. You are absolutely correct about not eating wild plants/fungi that you can not positively identify. Many very poisonous species of plants can look almost exactly like their edible counterpart. When in doubt do not consume it.

That Giant Puff Ball Mushrooms appears nice and smooth and thick as you cut into the mushroom that mushroom looks very dense inside and much heavier weight than compared to the most common mushrooms.

Definitely be careful when harvesting wild puffballs, young death cap mushrooms look like small puffballs. Be extra wary of puffballs found near oak trees.
@davidspassage
@davidspassage 9 лет назад
0xFF I usually only harvest them when they are at least the size of a softball. Mostly because of the increased food-value at that size :-)

You can also freeze giant bovists with the skin cut into slices. The taste and consistency are better preserved. After thawing, I peel the skin off again. A whole giant bovist is too much for me and I can try out different things.

Hello David, I ordered and planted some puff balls and I was just wanting to know if you or anyone knows what these look like when they are just starting to grow? I water my puff ball patch around 11 a.m. and I went back out around 7 p.m. the same day and there was all this bright yellow stuff that just appeared it almost looked like someone put some can corn out on the ground but it was like a gel and it smelled very earthy not very good smelling. Could this be my puff balls starting to grow or do you think it is something else? All I know is its really weird looking. Thank you for your time.

Amanda G I can't honestly tell you. Puffballs in my area tend to grow very quickly depending on how much rain we get. It's not uncommon for them to go from the size of a golf ball to the size of a basketball in 2-3 days. They usually start out white and round, and grow from there.

I'm in Indiana and we have puff balls. So can you replant them. Or is there anyway to grow them. Is there any seeds or roots I can use.

I completely understand the fact that many mushrooms are too hard to tell apart (personally I just always ask an expert), but honestly, anyone who can't figure out the difference of a full grown, ripe, younggiant puffball and a poisonous mushroom has some problomes

If you have never ate puff ball before you should start in moderation. It can be a little harsh in the gut for some people.
@waynejohnson9119
@waynejohnson9119 4 года назад
You ruined that puffball from producing spores all the while explaining why a single mushroom should be left alone in the wild. That green interior was the puffball factory which was destroyed before it could produce spores.
@chuckybang

If you watch the video it's literally filled with spores. It's won't explode in a puff though.
