I feel you at the end there Kev. I had a local shop/track that ultimately went out of business simply because they were not welcoming at all and you were a burden to them if you were new to the hobby and didn't know everything already. This hobby is all about fun and bringing more and more people to enjoy it not a little exclusive club that is overly competitive/serious!

I'm in Gulfport, and the field here closed a few years ago for the same reason. I went one time saw how they treated me and another guy with helicopters like myself and we both left and went to the beach to fly in peace. Less then a year later it closed down. Good riddance.

I foufound this channel by accident. I've not been into RC since my 30's. I had my first RC car in 1978. Your assertion that clubs are basically full off nobs is spot on. It's why I fell out of love with the hobby. Having seen your approach and enthusiasm, I'm thinking of buying a Tamiya kit and smashing it round the car park at work and ignoring the fact that I'm a 55 Yr old manopausal stroke survivor. Epic channel. Thanks Kevin.

Dave ya Carter. Go for it. O bought a Tamiya Grasshopper, my first car since the mid 80s. Shoved a bigger motor on it. It's great fun in car parks and on the road. It handles comically bad - that's the appeal of it. Once you've replaced the broken bodyshell you spent ages getting to look nice, it sits on the shelf nicely and looks lovely. It won't go "to the moon", but it's worth every penny with a brushed motor and cheapy NiMH battery. Enjoy.
@theelmgren

Did the same here.. I like the mechanical aspect as well as the driving part, and it is cheaper than real cars, full size that is :)
@tomellingham8627
@tomellingham8627 8 месяцев назад
@@theelmgren Trying to tame it is addictive and very satisfying when it's mastered. There's a gravel oval bike racing circuit near me and I take it there - always get surrounded by kids who live spinning it round in circles. I race GT12 cars - they are about precision and performance, and only run on special "carpet" track or very clean smooth tarmac but the Grasshopper is so much fun . I have another I built just for the art of it and have it sitting in the cupboard. It's clocked about a minute of driving and is purely just for gawking at.

Well said, Kev. I’ve probably been one of those annoying party poopers, telling people they shouldn’t goof around and take their hobbies seriously. It’s kind of sad because I ruined fun for others and even for myself. Took me a while to understand that it is totally OK to do something just for the fun of it, and not straining myself to get better at it and taking it way too serious.

Well, that's the thing about everything: some take it way too seriously and some not at all. It depends on where your passion lies and your state of mind on the subject. Great rant, and I totally agree with you. I hold several CAA Operational Authorisations (and a member of the BMFA) and still have the "know-it-alls" telling me that I'm "not allowed to do that" or they think my hobbies are dangerous to the public. First off I am a long time subscriber. I don’t comment that often on any channel but I’ve got to say that I have mad respect for your honesty on that subject especially for someone of your stature in this hobby. What you said needs to be echoed throughout this hobby. I live in Dallas and before I got back into the hobby in bout 2015 rc world had changed a lot. I left the hobby back when you could walk into Traxxas with trx .15 in your hand walk up to a desk with 40 bucks and they gave you a new exchange walk out the door. So I wasn’t a complete stranger to rc, but when I started asking hobby store employees about these new electronics and lipo batteries compared to nitro they treated me like I was in the wrong place. It was discouraging for me. So thanks for ranting for me!! Perfectly said, Kev. I've experienced similar feelings in other hobbies such as trading card games. A small group of people always take things too serious and try to make certain hobbies into this big business kind of thing, be it RC, card games, or even video games, when every hobby at the end of the day should be about having fun and forgetting about the stresses of life for a short while. Yeah, those so called "gatekeepers" are the reason the hobby will die out, they mostly are old dudes who don't want "these damn young hooligans" near them or their planes and get all secretive about their planes as to be completely sure no-one steals their experience and knowledge instead of sharing it. Those people are honestly the reason I too stopped RC "helicoptering" and reoriented my interest towards RC cars, they are far more lean and welcoming towards new people. They even bring their children and partners.. Aeronautics seems to be exclusively reserved for old men over 60, because in the entire two years I flew RC helos, not once have I met someone my age; or any women for that matter. Not only in the UK by the way, in Germany, France and the Netherlands on flying contests I encountered the same mentality, everyone kept strictly to themselves, so nobody could do corporate espionage or whatever.

I do wonder if at the helicopter location you have been disallowed from a concern whether there is an element of safety coming in. Large RC helicopters can be lethal as you know - i know you are there on your own and being indivdually safe, but they may think your content may lead people to be less safe and they don't want the risk of bad PR. The solution to RC clubs seems obvious, Kev: Make your own. And the reason why it happens is because the people that want to have fun don't want administrative positions. They just want to have fun. The people that do get into administrative positions do so usually because they have a very strong opinion about how things should be, and they want to impose that on everyone. You see it everywhere. RC clubs, forum moderators, city councils, all levels of government. That's why we can't have nice things: because the people in charge think they own the place.

I experienced the same over in South Africa and recently in New Zealand so thats why I kind stuck to restorative work on RC. Anywhere you go with your kit people act weird and have negative vibes towards you, and on the other hand rc has become just too expensive for no reason which is why I stuck with restoration. Love your videos Kev. Take care 🎉😊

Agreed with your rant. I was in the hobby nitro RC and electric back in the mid 90s for about 13 years. The hobby changed a lot on that time. I'm all for getting new people in the hobby and getting them on board, but there's just too many that take it to the n'th level especially bashing which is supposed to be fun. Plus if you live in the city lack of places to run your RC car, boat, airplane anymore with everything paved over and becoming private property. Like anything, it takes only a few bad eggs to ruin it for everyone. Can't wait to see you get that jet RC!

I went to Manila to race rc this year. For the philippine Masters, it was amazing and friendly. Robert Battle JQ and ongaro were also helpful to other drivers. Scotty was so welcoming, and I had only been in the hobby for 1 year. Our little clubs won't let us on the track even if we traveled 5 hours to get there. But you show up and other away drivers are on the track due to being number 1 driver.

Totally agree Kev the only point to the hobby is to have fun. I'm currently building an scx24 with my son to go crawl around with. Working on my own crawling and rc park as well

I think you and your mates should get a bit of land and create your own club. I have a feeling it would probably end up being one of the best clubs around.

Love my aero club. I quit my RC road course club because people were rude and uninviting and unwilling to help anyone new to it. Where I come from, you embrace the new person, make them feel at home and welcomed. First day flying at my local aero club, members greeted me right away, helped me get setup properly. Within two flights, I had new forever friends. Going to the field should be fun. Nothing but smiles. Unless of course you crash. Which happens. Last time I lawndarted, everyone was so helpful getting my cheap foam plane back together and back in the air that day. That’s the way clubs should be. Sorry you have had the opposite experience at you local clubs. Seems like these guys with the big jets are a fun group. Look forward to seeing you fly with a nice club soon Kev.

Kevin, you couldn’t have said it better! There is nothing more fun than being a grown man and playing with toys! People who are negative shouldn’t be allowed to have them.

You're absolutely right about the club mentality, the problem is there are bellends everywhere. Fortunately I live in Finland so I can take my jets to the airfield and 9 out of 10 times I'm the only one there. The only problem is I have to pick up all the confetti myself when it goes tango uniform.:)

Standard for most clubs in various walks of life. Always get the minority few who shout the loudest when actually it's their own insecurities causing the issues. Fair play for voicing it Kev. More fun, more RC, more hobbies, more like minded people not taking themselves seriously.

yay top content to start the day off! Maybe you need to get one Kev, the onboard footage would be great if a camera could stay in/on lol, re-watching this i didn't even notice the gorgon earlier. Btw if you crash them hard the steering linkages are susceptible to going, we have gone through two :'D And also the motor can slide forward if it crashes hard enough, learned this from my daughters driving habits lmao
