Thank you for pointing out that it's totally cool to have a dog that's not a quintessential goofy golden, and that it's all up to us, as caretakers, to manage our dogs, and that it's fine for our dogs not to love, or want to even say hi, to random strangers. You have no idea how much I needed to hear this reiterated to me by a truly balanced trainer.

The only negative thing about your videos is that I’m typically at work when they come out and can’t watch them right away🤣. As always…absolute perfection, Tom!

She’s a Dutch shepherd therefore she’s always on.🤣I love the fact that they asked that, made me giggle tbh.

I really appreciated the discussion about how dogs shouldn't have to greet and be super friendly to every person . My sister has a professionally trained pit who is wonderful - but she's also a handful, and I feel privileged that she acknowledges me as a person who has the right to handle her. It took me days of ignoring her in close proximity while she was in her crate (her safe place). One day, I knew she had accepted me. My BIL however, believed that because he's "good with dogs", that he could just wander up and randomly start interacting without even introducing himself. She reacted negatively, but he thought she was just playing (she was displaying a fear reaction - lunge and retreat -repeat). He could have been bitten and certainly would have been had she not been so well trained. I learned that I need to be a bigger advocate for her when I'm the handler. "Please don't touch my dog" needs to be my mantra - no matter who it is!

It was interesting in the first few minutes of this video, both owners were allowing the dog to lean on them, hide behind them and were constantly petting and reassuring him. I think they were inadvertently reinforcing his insecurities without realising. Awesome that they have let Tom help them.

Duke’s owners asked some great questions, and I loved your answers! Appreciated the references and different methods of e-collar training. Owners were super engaged and seemed like naturals working with Duke.

Never mind the dog, Tom’s so good with people as well. The explanation about the correction with the e-collar and not using because the dog will get conflicted 👍 thank you! So much info!

I had a rottie named Duke years ago. I absolutely love the breed and can't imagine having anything else. That being said they are not for the weak of heart and are extremely smart and twice as stubborn. You need to be very strong and confident in your presence with them and I'm so happy to see these owners are just right for him. Duke looks like such a sweet ole bear!

It's funny you mentioned the Monks of New Skete back in the early 80's I was at the training facility and I was in awe. The amount of control they had over the dogs was amazing. It is what got me started in dog training. I watched a trainer come out of the woods with 10 dogs off leash and not take their eyes off the trainer I'm 51 now and it's still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday it was awesome

Your relationship with your dog is amazing. How long did it take you to get to that level ob obedience?

I think Tom’s dog is a perfect example of a dog where if she wasn’t well trained she would be one of many anxious out of control hyperactive reactive dogs he gets at his facility. She’s be a total monster if she didn’t have a job didn’t work didn’t get proper stimulation exercise and attention.

Duke's owners asked so many questions that people have so it was good to see the how/why answers. Love a rottie and love seeing Duke's owners doing everything to include him in their lives in every way. ❤️

Great Video. Reactive dogs can be so time consuming, but reactive dogs can become great dogs. My own Ruby is a reactive dog. When I first got her she was so wild n crazy the shelter had a warning on her paperwork to have 2 people handle her and that she would be unteachable. The only thing my Ruby had going for her is that she is a very beautiful dog. Now she is a 2 time trick dog champ. She still has some issues but we are working those out slowly and I have faith in Ruby that she will get there.

Great video! My Rottie has been in training since he was 12 weeks old. I can take him anywhere, he passed his CGC at 6 months old, he's 9 months now, and I have to be sure to keep up with it. My Shepard is another story! Super high strung, she's not a vicious dog, she's full of energy, but exactly as you said every dog is different, and act differently depending on their environment. I hope you can help get their Rott trained, it's an awesome feeling to be able to have a well balanced, obedient dog you can take out publicly that is breed discriminated.

You have said and demonstrated this many times, but the delivery this time was more succinct, direct, and visibly relatable. Perhaps timing in conjunction with delivery made it more impactful. This video really explains the E collar very well. I had several questions about it, and I can see now that we don’t use it as a punishment for bad behavior, it’s more of a tool to help you communicate and enhance the learning and obedience. Haven’t tried it yet, but I’m getting there! Basic obedience is definitely the foundation!!

I absolutely LOVE your videos! Still off here, Phoenix was fast the decline after her lymphoma diagnosis, one week to the day. Had to send two on their final journey Friday, double whammy, one barely 4 one 16 and ailing. Seemed minder to send them together but mamma isn't "recovered" and in a better place yet. Been doing some one on one with the two Shep's I have still, seems to also be helping them with their grieving process. Thanks Tom, even in my worst of times, your training and advice spurs hope and motivates me to be the owner and handler my dogs think i am 🥰

I wish I had the explanation of how to properly introduce the e-collar. I think I have made some mistakes with how and when to utilize the stimulation vs the pager aspect… I had the Dogtra IQ plus for my shepherd but I believe I will need to move up to the 280c. I was blessed with 2 unicorn Rotties and 1 giant Rottie that was fearful and protective. Love Rotties but they are not for everyone and they require WORK. Duke is GORGEOUS! Thank you for educating his people. I'd love an update on Duke's progress.

I had the unicorn rotti before my current rotti. Now I live with 130lbs of constant work and lots of unexpecteds. My rotti is awesome on the leash for walking, he is responsive to commands but when a distraction is introduced, it's all toast. I am currently working the pager again in conjunction with a prong collar because we need to get him under control to save his life. We would never consider putting him down or giving him away, we committed to him the day we adopted. He has so many amazing skills that we've taught him and he loves people. Other dogs and wheels send him over the edge. Two simple things that we have to figure out how to control and we have a unicorn again. Now if I could just get him to stop marking my things.

I have an American bully and he is very much like this rottweiler here very reactive hes very much in protection mode at all times hes very weary of strangers and these are some things that have honestly really helped and I can't wait to keep working with him more.

Here in sweden we have a diffrent mentality towards dog training then Tom, Fenrir and most of the guys that are insanely good dog handlers/trainers. But i preach leash control, get comfy with the leash it should be an extension of yourself, ur will. im raised with dogs and love dogs, but my Gf isent but even with 0 experiance she is more experianced then most dog trainers/instructors near us. how to train a dog: Watch TOM DAVIS! observ his mentality, his movements, reflect on what you need to do with ur own dog, dont give up. (it usualy starts with a deep relaxing breath). Tom is an absolute genius.

We have always had at least 3-4 rotties with us since 96 (biggest was close to 180lbs lol). Right off the bat I noticed that collar lol. Rotties are very powerful dogs and no matter how well trained and well mannered, you need to have a good control collar just in case. I normally have an Ecollor on and a prong backup depending on where we are. Our yongest is still in training so with him, im a bit more careful just in case. I hope it all works well for him cause he seems like a very sweet little fella. For us the ONLY bad thing about rotties is they are prone to certain cancers and we have lost alot of our babies over the years due to this. But you cant ask for a better family member. Loving, loyal, smart, and family protector.

I was blessed to have the "unicorn" dog in Cujo who was a Boston Terrier x English bulldog mix. Cujo was great with every dog that he ran into - very respectful and polite. He accepted every dog into my home that I fostered or pet sat with no jealousy or animosity - I miss him dearly.

Hi Tom, can you make a video on how to properly groom various breeds of dogs? I used the Furminator for my Aussie, it partially broke off the top hair and it was brittle for a long time. I probably shouldn't have used that for the two-layer fur ... Which brushes are recommended for which breeds? In addition to training, care is of course an important part for dog owners. Maybe you have some ideas now for upcoming video projects. Greets and keep up the awesome work!

The Rottweiler is my favorite breed and will be my next dog. The reason I watch your channel along with a couple others is to prepare myself for when that day comes. I would have loved to see this Rottweiler in a reactive situation because of another dog (my biggest concern getting one) like we have seen in so many other videos. Is there a reason that wasn't included in this video? Either way this was great to watch. I just wish some addition sides to his reactivity was featured. Thanks for all you do.

I am 58 years old, and have had several cancer related surgeries in the last year...I have a 1 year old 128lb Rottweiler named Chase,, very stubborn, very willful, very strong, he has while on walks on 4 occasions pulled me off my feet with explosive burst of wanting to go after something he wanted to go after, he always pulled on the leash, well I have been fortunate and feel so blessed and privileged to come across your videos after watching many other trainers videos, and spent hours watching your techniques and have done my best to follow your methods, in 15 days he is well on his way to being manageable, he still aggressively acts up when a car, or especially motorcycles go buy, but I wanna let you know how much I appreciate your videos, if I could afford to buy your membership and support you in that way I would pay triple to support and show my appreciation to you,, all I can do is say THANK YOU, THANK YOU, I see the light at the end of the tunnel

Have the same problem with my dog. If we go somewhere different she is 80% less reactive. On her daily walk in our area she is very reactive (and also a high scenter which I didn’t realise was a thing). Im still watching videos daily and trying!

What are your thoughts on using 'stimulation' to grab a dog's attention when they've lost complete control?

My one dog is only reactive to a certain few dog individuals in our neighborhood and not at all when we are away. He is pushy and confident … and very small 😅

Was Thompson was well trained as Lakota? I have a Saint puppy and I’m curious. They seem to be slower at learning tricks and commands than a lot of other breeds.

My dogue de Bordeaux is a unicorn he loves every person and animal. Great with kids and very gentle with them. He can differentiate between how to treat a bigger person or a smaller human or animal. He so gentle and loving, also extremely trusting of people in general. I have no idea how this breed was used to guard and hunt if they’re anything like my boy

I have a pittie mix who loves everyone and every dog. However, someone came into my backyard and I wasn’t aware. All of a sudden, he was on it and barking repeatedly (he never does that). It’s part of his breed to want to protect me, and I have a lot of respect for that. I don’t love barking but I’m not training his job out of him.

My 20 pound beagle mix does not care about the pager at all when he is reactive, but the prong collar has really put me back in control when he decides he is mad there is another dog outside when we are on our walk.

I’ve been following your trainings for quite some time now. My pup is 9 months old and has come a long way with reactivity now. He no longer reacts when we walk by someone, unless they approach to pet him or their dog lunges towards him. He picks the people he likes, and reacts to those he seems to not like. Is there a fix to this? Or is this just how he is?

I have a huge English Mastiff. He is protective and doesn’t want to approach others. That’s fine by me, as long as he listens to my commands. I’ve taken him to dog parks and he will just sit and chill. That’s okay, he loves people and he listens to what I say.

My Pyrenees is scared of people. Even me I’ve tried to connect with her but she is just is scared to even come to me and my husband. Is there a way to help her be more comfortable and confident? Or is this just how she is? I’ve been following your training for a while and it has helped me with my Pit mix a lot. I just want to know what I can do for my Pyrenees to help her be more comfortable around us.

Would like to learn how to get my 2 female dobie's that obedient like ur Shepherd or @ least enough that I can b confident that I have complete control over them. My issues are turning off the barking by command, loose leash walking & sit when I say lay down ect.. Can you give me help with my girl's. Now my 10 month old is in obedience classes & my oldest was as well when younger. Oldest still will not walk on leash without pulling unless has prong collar on. She is 3.8 yrs old.

I never know what e collar he's taking about. We have a sport dog e collar and it has a vibrate and then settings 1-7. Are there collars that have settings less than vibrate?
