The groomer specified that this is not a show dog, so the coat can be clipped instead of trimmed. She clearly says that show dogs have trimmed layered coats in shows. She also says, very wisely, that life is not a dog show....

he's such a GOOD DOG. I have a mini schnauzer and I love him so much. He is so sweet and I am seriously thinking about a Giant next time because I'm a widow and I live alone. I have been researching breeds to find a good watch dog that will be a good companion too, I think schnauzers have THE best temperament of any dog breed.

This is a great video! I love how she speaks truth about it's NOT A DOG FOR EVERYONE! So many breeders are selling these dogs to the wrong people and starting to really breed bad Giants. Bad people make bad Giants. They are not dogs meant for idiots to train them to be mean, they are mean enough on their own. If you find a breeder down south who is breeding "protection" Giants...RUN the other way. They are breeding strictly for money! Their dogs are not temperament tested or health tested.

Chris M Where did you find a breeder for pepper and salt giants? I have only seen them in pictures! There are a few GS breeders near me, but they breed only black Giant Schnauzers.

Thank you for the informative tutorial. I would like to add that their is also a Black and silver color. you mentioned that if it wasn't black or salt and pepper than it isn't a giant. I, myself own a black and silver. They are not common because their markings are considered a fault, but they do exist. A select few breeders breed these rare dogs in this country. I'm not sure if you knew that but thought I would share.

Brings back memories.. this process used to take me 3hrs.. from clipping her hair to washing her.. the hardest part was her face/ears, her behind and tail.. the clipping machine used to get so hot she hated it..

Paula Martin, in addition to it being just a pet, American (soft) coated giants fur is different. I think a European (rough) coat would look pretty bad shaved, too.

Kersten Toebben umm... giant schnauzers in America and in Europe are the same but if you clip your Schnauzer's coat instead of stripping it, eventually the texture will change. It will feel very soft and may shed more.

In the UK it's considered animal cruelty to crop the ears or dock the tail of a dog and it's now illegal.

Its good for the coat, to trim them, not just for the show! They should be trimmed. Many groomers shave them just because its much easier and quicker. Its a shame for breed. I agree with the comment below of Paula Martin. Coat cant breathe if they are shaved, that could bring out many allergies, the same with terriers.

I shave my Giant Schnauzer, who is 8 years old and NOT a show dog. We have no skin issues and she always looks lovely (except after playing in the mud).

I'm European and I'm actually quite shock that you shave this Schnauzer. Is it something common in the US ? Over here it's consider as an aberration. We shave small parts (throat, head, tail) but we trim (is this the proper word ? English is not my mother tongue) is back and flanks. The result is much more natural. Actually, if i someone go to a dog show with is schnauzer shave, the judges will laugh at is face...

Paula Martin If he was a show dog, he would not be shaved like that. The dog in this video is NOT a show dog so it’s okay for them to be shaved like that. Also like the woman said, he was cut to the owners request so the person who owns the dog wanted him to be shaved down.

She said show dogs are NOT shaved. And they aren't. Grooming a show Giant Schnauzer is a whole different process which takes much time and is expensive.

you NEVER clip or shave GS! This ruins the coat. Groomers nowadays are just lazy and don't know how to strip. If you want to maintain your GS beautiful, hard, wired coat, either find a good groomer or learn to do it yourself.

AAAmar They look like a Doberman without the whiskers and coat. A GS is basically a Dobie in a wire coat, somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

They don't cut their ears off, the cut a part of their ears off, to be more specific. Depends on what you want your dog to look like, your call really, you can morally contest it, but it doesn't change the fact that the owner makes the decision, when you get your dog, don't crop his ears, your call.

It also doesn't leave them with any chronic pain that we know off. It's just like humans getting plastic surgery. Docking the tail on the other handoriginally had a functional purpose instead of a style purpose..

Not only are the ears cropped, the tails are docked. When I got my sweet mini girl, I told the breeder I wanted her natural. The only thing that has ever been cut is her hair. I do like the schnauzer haircut. Her tail is beautiful and long. She loves her tail and so do I. I think this is a barbaric practice. More people should tell the breeders the want their schnauzers natural. All this cutting is painful to the dog and it is expensive. Just ask the vet how much he charges. Sometimes the ears are ruined

@@robertalee2 So I suppose spaying and neutering dogs, cats and so on is also inhumane and barbaric. Shouldn't abdominal surgery be mentioned in the same conversation as docking and cropping.
