Joey played close to this level by age 6. He's about 10 on this video. I've been around jazz and musicians my whole life. I've never seen or heard anyone so young as fully musically developed as joey. There isn't a teacher or enough lessons in history to allow someone to put it all together as this kid has done. He was imbued with something unexplainable and otherworldly from birth is the only explanation for such talent.

Someone please pour some water on this kid... He is smokin'!! In the midst of his solo, a long one, ala Coltrane, he slips in a little "St. Thomas" by Sonny Rollins... This kid is too much!!! This is REAL JAZZ, Dave Koz & Kenny G....

@numbsain
@numbsain 8 лет назад
+James Griffin he threw in St Thomas, Epistrophy, Moment's Notice, a bird tune i can't remember the name of, Countdown in the intro but the amazing thing about this solo was the way he played on the outside upper extensions of the chords consistently. like at one point for about 3 choruses bars he altered every chord in the exact same way. his ears are more opened up than any player i've ever heard. I don't think even the best jazz players quite hear what he is hearing I've played and studied jazz my whole life and I know he's going a couple levels deeper than what i can break down. I can hear it but it is twisting my ear to do so. And it would take me another whole life time to be able to do it.

I am just going to tell it like it is joey has a lot of African American in him,you can see it as well as hear it in his music, I know he's from Indonesia, but we are so quick to say like I saw in another comment,on the tablet, that someone typed, in had Jewish in him, that's all well and good but jazz came from the African American, people. And Joey studies these great jazz men, that is why he is a young giant of today.understand me plainly his creator made him like that and you cannot negate his mom and dad because his dad played jazz albums around him when he was a toddler.
@lopezb
@lopezb 7 лет назад
His family is Christian, maybe Baptist, he grew up on Gospel music as well as his Dad's jazz record collection, which must have been excellent. His parents must be wonderful folks, as his head seems really screwed on straight. A gentle soul. We are all very lucky to have him on the planet and to be here when he's here. Coltrane, Monk would be proud.

Hannible Tobe Indonesian had their DNA from African mixed with East Asian. The western indonesian people look like south east asian (thai, malay, philipines), while eastern indonesian (papua) look like african (and very musical), gradualy mixed in the middle. Joey mother is from western indonesian (java, mix with ashkenazy jew), his father is from eastern.

JOEY ALEXANDER est comme "Pelé" au Football. Simple àcomprendre et admettre , voilà tout ! GIANT STEPS est une des compositions de John Coltrane, très complexe pour le "CHORUS". @jakeg12345 4 года назад
They pretty much are sticking to the form of the original. How are they departing in your opinion? Because there is an extended cadenza? Jazz forms by nature are very loose compared to other forms of music and the basic form is generally a melody which is expected to be ornamented, inverted and developed etc. alongside a set of chord changes which are expected to be embellished, substituted or even completely reharmonised. The harmony in this sticks very closely to the original form and above and beyond that, the soloist states the head quite clearly and even improvises using a lot of coltrane pattern lines as in the original.

@@davidscott1052 Advanced artists don't give a-f whether you praise them or not so I'll not bother to discuss your negative reply. I have by the way recorded this tune many times. These guys overplay this tune in my view, but to be forward about why I say so, Coltrane's original solo on this tune more or less sticks to a pre-written script throughout and there's a reason for that. He gives an elegant, concise, pruned solo. His improvisation as such is almost none. G-S is a composition that is very limiting harmonically due to the quick pace. Over the years I have noticed that many artists who record it cannot avoid fluffing it up with filler, chromaticism and other superficialities. That's why I do not pour praise on this recording. Good playing maybe, but virtuosity for the sake of virtuosity is not desirable.
